One of the most relentlessly adorable characters in Star Wars history just got caught up in some copyright confusion. Giphy has restored GIFs of Disney+ series The Mandalorian's stand-out character The Child (nicknamed "baby Yoda" because... well, look at him) after "confusion" over whether or not the animations were allowed. Vulture claimed in a spoiler-laden piece that the GIFs of the cute-as-hell character were taken down for "copyright reasons," but Giphy has stressed that Disney wasn't responsible. Giphy only pulled the snippets temporarily while it "reviewed the situation," the company said in a statement to the BBC.

Toy lightsabers are a lot of fun: Kids love to strike poses, swing them through the air and jab the weapons at their friends as they pretend to be Luke Skywalker, Rey or even Darth Vader and Kylo Ren. But what they can't do with a standard lightsaber is actually learn how to wield one. Star Wars Lightsaber Academy, an app-connected toy introduced at this week's Toy Fair, aims to change that by putting kids (and adults) under the virtual tutelage of some of their favorite Force users.

Frank Oz needs no introduction. He's voiced iconic characters like Yoda and Miss Piggy and directed classic films like Little Shop of Horrors and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. His impact extends far beyond geek circles; he's a creative legend in Hollywood. I had a chance to chat with Oz at SXSW this week about his upcoming documentary, Muppet Guys Talking: Secrets Behind the Show the Whole World Watched.

Don't relish the thought of buying a $150 robotic BB-8 toy just to have some Star Wars-related fun? Don't worry, you won't have to spend a cent. A handful of websites have posted free tools that let you have fun with the sci-fi series' iconic language. The official Crawl Creator is arguably the highlight -- its simple editor turns your writing into the famous scrolling text you've seen in front of every Star Wars flick. There's also a Sonnet Generator that crafts Shakespearean Star Wars poetry from just a few questions. And yes, everyone's favorite centuries-old Jedi gets his due: plug text into the Yoda-Speak Generator and you'll get whatever you wrote in Yoda's distinct verb-follows-subject phrasing. These will only do so much to tide you over until The Force Awakens hits theaters, but they're definitely gentler on your bank account than the endless waves of merchandise hitting stores.

Thrilled, Star Wars fans will be, when in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 a beloved character appears. ... okay, we're not going to do the Yoda voice the whole time. We'd like you guys to be able to read this stuff. LucasArts revealed that Yoda will appear in The Force Unleashed 2, in a segment taking place on his home planet of Dagobah. Angsty Force unleasher Starkiller senses a powerful presence, and goes to the planet to investigate. There, he finds everyone's favorite Jedi Master, who helps him deal with, you know, all the angst. With this being ... a Star Wars game, the presence of Yoda actually makes sense this time. If more Yoda you would like to see (we can't help it, apparently!), we have screens in our gallery and a video after the break.%Gallery-99323%

Did you hear this wildly overplayed news story about Darth Vader lately? According to a group of French psychiatrists and psychologists who have way too much time on their hands and not enough free press coverage, they broke down Vader's personality and "discovered" that he had borderline personality disorder. Pardon my meme, but O RLY? Sure, the guy killed kids, committed domestic abuse, went on an extreme power trip, betrayed his mentor, tortured one of his kids and tried to kill the other, choked any underling who failed him and struggled with sexual repression -- but thank goodness that we have professionals around to tell us the obvious. Now, if those psychiatrists can turn their attention to George Lucas and his making of Howard the Duck, we'd be making progress. Anyway, continuing from my history retrospective of Star Wars Galaxies and last week's interview with the first batch of SWG vets, the Game Archaeologist now ventures into a subculture long believed to be extinct: post-NGE players who love the game. Join me in welcoming our newest expedition members: Bill "Flynne Cordova" Van Malsen, Alex "Danick Jett" Wiberg, Stephanie "Jao" Koehler and Earth Eternal's Andrew "Titas Lightdust" Sipotz. Never tell them the odds and they'll get you there safe every time.

"For over a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic, before the dark times, before the Empire," Obi-wan Kenobi explained to a young Luke Skywalker and the audience for the first time in Star Wars: A New Hope. This started the never-ending quest of finding out what exactly it means to master the seemingly limitless power of the Force. On that life-transforming statement, we begin in this week's Hyperspace Beacon. The Jedi Knight places Star Wars beyond every other science fiction story in world. The mix of science and mysticism takes us to a place that challenges not only our mind but our spiritual beliefs as well. The Jedi Order asks us to, "unlearn what you have learned," and to, "do or do not. There is no try." Then, as if to defy greater logic, they brandish a sword made completely of light. Let us take a few moments to rediscover these lightsaber-wielding wizards, find out a little of how they came to be, examine what differences arose over the thousands of years they existed, and investigate what you can expect from the Jedi in Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Yet one Jedi was feared above all others, and that Jedi ... was Alex. That's right! THQ's finally giving the beloved sci-fi franchise the treatment it deserves on iPhone with Star Wars: Lightsaber Duel (like the existing lightsaber app, but for two phones), Star Wars: Cantina (like Diner Dash but ... spacier) and Star Wars: Yoda Sound Board (like something that you'd ever want to spend money on, but the opposite). ... What, are these not the apps you're looking for? ... Fine, yes, that was an intentionally misleading headline. We had to suffer a pretty brutal comedown when we read the press release, so we thought it only fair that you should too. Sorry.

  • Soulcalibur IV getting Vader and Yoda DLC

It seems when Namco Bandai told us Darth Vader and Yoda would remain trapped in their respective console domains, it was only true ... from a certain point of view. The company has shockingly confirmed that, due to "overwhelming fan response," those suspiciously blank character portraits in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Soulcalibur IV will soon be filled in by a downloadable Darth Vader or Yoda. Good job, fans, we're sure Namco would never have figured out how to make money like this on its own.The proper Star Wars showdown will begin on October 23rd, provided you're willing to pay 400 and $5 for a hyperventilating throat crusher and his little green friend, respectively. And just so we can work in another tedious reference, we'll add: We pray Namco doesn't alter the deal any further. Good one, us![Via press release]

SHOCK! Namco Bandai has just announced that Xbox 360's exclusive Soulcalibur IV character, Yoda, will be available as DLC on the PS3. We totally didn't see this coming. The DLC pack will be available next Thursday, October 23rd, and will cost $4.99. Xbox 360 owners will be able to access the PS3-exclusive character, Darth Vader, for 400 Microsoft Points.

  • No Star Wars DLC for Soul Calibur IV, says game's director

What's wrong with this picture? It directly contradicts what Soul Calibur IV director Katsutoshi Sasaki said in a recent interview, that's what. Specifically, Sasaki responded "we don't have any plans for that" when asked by XCN if we'd ever see both characters from a galaxy far, far away battling each other on the same console. You can't get much more official than the game's director, but his comments don't explain screenshots (such as the one above) and video that have appeared on the net clearly (and seemingly authentically) showing both Yoda and Vader in the same version of SCIV. We can't help but think Sasaki is practicing his Jedi mind tricks on us with this one.[Via PS3 Fanboy]

  • 'No plans' for Yoda on PS3 Soulcalibur IV

If Katsutoshi Sasaki, the director of Soulcalibur IV, is to be believed, there will be no Yoda in the form of DLC in the PS3 version. There won't be a Vader DLC for the 360 version, for that matter. The interview in MSXBox World contains mostly questions about the Xbox 360 version, but when asked "will there ever be a time when we can have Darth Vader and Yoda on the same console?" Sasaki gave a clear reply of "we don't have any plans for that." The interview is dated August 31st, 2008, but we are going to assume it is from July 31st.This is contrary to earlier reports on the official Korean PlayStation site claiming Yoda will be available for download from the PSN. And videos like this certainly won't help douse those rumors.

Over the weekend, a video of Darth Vader and Yoda fighting each other in Soulcalibur IV was leaked onto the internet (and then it was subsequently pulled). Currently, Darth Vader lives only on the PS3 version, while Yoda lives only on the Xbox 360 version. Could Namco Bandai be planning DLC which unlocks the famed Star Wars characters in both versions? It would make a lot of sense, wouldn't it?According to the Korean PlayStation site, Yoda will be available for download from the PSN. That sounds like DLC to us. While Namco Bandai hasn't confirmed anything yet, we wouldn't be surprised if Yoda (and who knows what other characters) ended up appearing in Soulcalibur IV.[Via Siliconera; Image via GamersReports]

After watching the above, almost uncomfortably rad trailer for Soul Calibur IV, we're ready to make a proclamation. If you can watch Darth Vader and Yoda killing dudes and you don't melt, even just a little, then your heart is made of iron and we're revoking your geek badge. Please, just go. Leave your Cheeto-dust-stained Battlestar Galactica T-shirt with Beverly on your way out.For those of your still with us, isn't it a little unnerving to see someone hit with a lightsaber and not be turned into person fractions? We hope the game includes a "Real World" mode where the fight begins, Yoda casually mentions that he's a Jedi and Mitsurugi puts his own sword in his belly just to save time. ...And yes, we just referred to a world including Yoda and Mitsurugi as the "real world." Please keep the snickers to a minimum.

  • Vader & Yoda 'naturally' fit into Soul Calibur IV

Soul Calibur IV director Katsutoshi Sasaki describes forthcoming guest appearances by Darth Vader and Yoda in the Soul Calibur universe as an obvious choice in this video interview with GameTrailers. Considering that Sasaki makes it clear that his games are built for "the consumers," we're starting to understand his brand of logic. Forget that Star Wars is set in a galaxy far, far away from the fantasy world of the Soul series. Rather, focus on Star Wars as one of the most profitable IPs of all time, and you can see why developer Project Soul gladly invited this force into its game – "naturally."

We appreciate Soul Calibur IV director Katsutoshi Sasaki's candor. In a recent CES interview with GameTrailers, the Namco Bandai bigwig explained the bizarre inclusion of Darth Vader and Yoda as playable characters in his upcoming game, simply stating that he's giving gamers what they want. Here at Joystiq HQ, we appreciate nonsensical pandering more than the average bear. How about Jack Bauer as the protagonist of the next Resistance game? Chuck Norris in Street Fighter IV? Or an unlockable Ron Paul in Super Smash Bros. Brawl? (Actually, no news about Brawl would shock us at this point.)
