A DirecTV satellite is at risk of explosion due to battery issues

Today in attention-grabbing headlines: DirecTV's satellite is at risk of explosion. Yes, you heard that right: the provider has one month to remove its Spaceway-1 satellite from geostationary orbit, to avoid the risk of exploding and taking down OTHER telecom satellites with it. At the root of these concerns are battery issues, which started manifesting back in December. According to SpaceNews, DirectTV said in an FCC filing earlier this week that an anomaly caused "significant and irreversible thermal damage" to the satellite's business.

This X-ray machine looks like it's straight out of Star Trek

Medical imaging tools like X-rays and CT scans are some of the best ways to detect potential health problems. But as common as they are here in the US, those machines often cost millions of dollars and are quite expensive to operate. Because of this, two-thirds of the world's population doesn't have access to X-rays. A company called Nanox is trying to bring medical imaging to more people by creating a small, affordable X-ray bed that looks like something straight out of Star Trek.

Researchers create the world's first living, programmable robots

After spending decades steeped in science fiction, I wouldn't immediately associate the words "living" and "robot," and I doubt a lot of you would either. We can't say the same about researchers at the University of Vermont and Tufts University, though -- they announced this week that they have successfully developed tiny living "machines" of sorts. To paraphrase researcher Joshua Bongard, these aren't traditional robots or a known species of animal -- these are something else entirely. These are living, programmable organisms.

Apple may be working on a Pro mode to juice up MacBooks

Apple may be cooking up some secret sauce in its labs, if the latest hints are anything to go by. Some text discovered in a macOS beta build describes a so-called Pro mode that could make apps run faster when activated. The string of text was spotted in a Catalina 10.15.3 beta build and doesn't appear to be a working feature yet. In this Pro mode, the text says "Apps may run faster, but battery life may decrease and fan noise may increase" It appears users will be able manually turn this mode on and off. We'd expect this feature to premiere on the 16 inch Macbook Pro, and any future machines that share its revised cooling design.

Apple’s maxed-out Mac Pro costs $50,000, we came up with better ways to spend that money

Yesterday Apple’s redesigned, revamped Mac Pro went on sale. This is Apple’s first significant Pro-level desktop upgrade in a long time, but it comes at a price. A fully maxed out Mac Pro costs $52,000 Mac Pro. Well, $52,599, to be precise. And that DOESN’T include the $5,000 for a Pro Display XDR, or its $1,000 stand. We did some math, and think it's important you know that for that price, you could by over 2,000 Baby Yoda plush dolls. We trust you know how to best spend your money.

NASA unveils 'the most powerful rocket ever built'

NASA has unveiled what it's calling the "most powerful rocket ever built" -- which is a pretty bold claim. But maybe bold is exactly what the space agency needs, considering how behind it is on its mission to put astronauts on the moon again. The new Space Launch System, or SLS, is expected to carry astronauts to the moon in 2024 as part of NASA's Artemis project.
