EXCLUSIVE: Pics of Motorola's new i930 Smartphone

While the rest of the gadget world was looking at the MPX and MPX 220, Motorola snuck out the i930 for the folks at
JavaOne. We went to the show expecting the same old story and the same old phones, so we left the good camera at home.
Stumbling into the Motorola booth, what's the first thing that catches our eye but the long rumored Microsoft
Smartphone for iDen networks like Nextel.
As expected not only will this be iDen's
first smartphone, it will also be the first iDen phone to have a camera. Motorola didn't tell us the resolution but we
know it's VGA or less or else they would have made special mention. It's also the first iDen phone we've seen (possibly
the first Microsoft Smartphone we've seen) to have a HUGE external display. It's gigantic, and color. Like all iDen
phones it has Push-to-Talk, Java, and aGPS. sadly, like other iDen phones, it lacks Bluetooth or IR. It looks to be
running Smartphone 2003 second edition, which seemed pretty stable on the model we tried, but there's still no word on
when this handset will be launched.
UPDATE: Just got this from a tipster who wishes to remain anonymous: "Actually, the i930 will be the second iDEN camera phone. There will be an i860 released before the i930 that is almost identical to the current i830, but with a camera. The Nextel MMS implementation is just about ready to roll out to all markets."
I can tell you for sure that the i930 will not be released before the end of Quarter 1 2005. This is straight from a member of the Nextel board of directors. I'm very disappointed it won't be released before Christmas.

I hear that the official release date is 12/15/04! This phone is clearly the best phone Nextel has put out! Its about time for a nice pic phone from Nextel!
Wait for the release date to buy though. They`re being sold as pre-release on Ebay for as much as $700.00! I doubt, once released, Nextel wouldn`t sell them for that much.

I don't know where everybody is getting their information, but the i930 will NOT be released before late Q1 2005. I heard it directly from somebody very important at Nextel. Anyway, why would they release a phone like the i930 on a Wednesday (12/15)? That makes no sense.
Jon is right. I saw the phone at the Motorola booth at the SEMA show and the sales folks stated the same. Too bad for Motorola that it has taken that long to get to market. Just ONE MORE example of why the US loses market share to the rest of the world (r u listening GM?Ford?)
I like the i860 so much better. It fits more snug between my butt cheeks.
Finally the nextel i930 will be coming out late january early february

I work in a Southern LINC office, and obviously we know what is coming out before you do, the i860 came out MONTHS before nextel had it, and when it came out it had sounds for the camera, and that was months before nextel even used that excuse, the i930 is a camera phone exactly like the i860 except instead of working like a regular phone, it has microsoft windows, it dosent have bluetooth, but it is an option that you will be able to download, if you have any questions about the phone, e-mail me at mlwaters@supplyco.net
So.. when do you think it will it release Matt?..or anyone else?.. I believe the sooner the better.. to close the gap for their lowest sales season which takes place.. (Like all bussinesses) during this time of year.. after christmas.. Stratedgically it would be a wise decision to release it within this month or February.. it would definately save their sales.. ^_^.. however if anyone else has any further hints. plz do tell.. ^_^

In my opinion they need to get it out soon. Especially with this merger with Sprint. After the merger is complete Motorola may not be the sole provider to nextel since I read that they are changing the systems. So if they release it now they probably would make a killing on them since SO many people like myself have been dying for it to come out.

there is LIMIT EDITION I930
phone will be release feb 14 and its gonna cost 399.99 with a 2 yr contract.that is the exact day for the phone to be release but you know how nextel is so i guess just wait n see.

I heard that the i930 is going 2 come out feb 14 but only on ebay. Because there is something wrong with the phone. So if you buy them off ebay they will work but if something goes wrong nextel can not fix it. So I would wait for nextel website 2 release it.
I spoke with a rep that came in my business. He told me the i930 with be out 4th quarter of 05. so don't get your hopes up but it may be bluetooth.
the i930 will be out in november for sure and this is coming from a distributer whom has preordered them in mass units to sell to the nextel reps not dealers but reps whom buy from distributers. i know this really sucks but i guess i'm gonna get the i860 for now. sorry to give the bad news

This phone is killing me, i still have the i830 and i want a new phone. I was almost goin to buy the i860 but then i heard the news of the i930 so i am holding out. I dont want to wait anymore, there are so many different dates that im hearing. I want to believe it will be out in february but am i just wishing to hard? Somebody give me the true release date of the i930
Ok.. Nextel just announced that they will not release the i930 soon... so.. dont carry any more hopes... its over guys.. you can shut down this page in the website.. The only hope that we have is that they might release it in 5th quarter of 2007..... so bare with them.. if you can.. im sorry.. :{
yeah this is gettin kind of old man I have the i95 could have gotten the i730 i830 or the i860 but I've known about the i930 for damn near half a year if this phone does not come out by summer I'm gonna say the hell with it. I don't think motorola has a understanding of how much the competition has a jump on them even sprint (who is about to merge with) has new phones either out or on the way, now I've heard nine different release dates and it's just gettin kind of old man....I want the phone but all this waitin is kind of stupid and the i007 has not even come out yet which means by the time the i930 comes out we still have to wait for the i007...it's just all kind of stupid..and god help you if you want the limited edition-like me and yes there is a limited edition comin out, but it depends on how long it takes for the normal i930 to hit the streets.....hold your breath people...hold your breath.

Im making the switch due to work demands and am considering the i860 any comments on that? nextel is deffinately releasing the 930 on the 14 (tomorrow) right?? there are auction on ebay right now with the phone for sale ending tomorrow... the people dont have the phones, but say they will have them tomorrow

As for the 930 we have no release date, the I860 is a huge seller. I take 50 calls a day in sales and I have not heard any bad words about it. And trust me we hear them.
The I930 is not scheduled to be release now till Q3 (maybe)that is straight from Nextel. There are plenty of new phones coming out though this year that aren't smart phones but still great looking Nextels.

i was wanting to wait on getting a new nextel because I herd and just read that new really nice phones were comming out, is the 860 still my best bet? or should i wait and see the new phones. Its a darn shame about the 930's

MY BROTHER WORKS AT UPS IN QUEENS NEW YORK CITY AND HE TOLD ME THAT HE SAW A SHIPMENT FROM NEXTEL (BIG BOX) TITLED NEXTEL CO. MOTOROLA i930 SO HE SAID THAT THE PHONES ARE IN. LETS JUST HOPE THEY ARE DISTRIBUTED TO STORES.
if you about to buy an i860 u should wait cuz the i930 is coming out on march 25 it was suppose to b release on feb 14...but march 25 is for sure now.
guys guys guys, i was a district manager in the chicago region about 6 months ago and never has a nextel phone been released on a friday, all there phones are realeased on mondays ALWAYS,(i.e. the i730,i830,i860),this march 25 thing is just a rumor, im not saying i know when the exact date is but its not going to be on a friday i can say that much
What's up everybody, I'm just here to help a few people(who are willing to listen to the real truth for a change) by sharing my personal insight on Nextel. OK, I've been with Nextel service for 5 years(back when they were a small company and nobody knew who the hell they were). Nobody(and I mean NOBODY!) ever knows EXACTLY when Nextel will bring out their new phones. Nextel even tells their own employees the wrong release dates. It's just a marketing tactic! They have everybody trying to figure out their release dates, and the whole time they're just waiting on the hype to build up. Then,(later than sooner) they tell their employees the wrong dates(usually dates far earlier than the actual release dates) so when people ask, they get all hyped up(like many of you), then they always supposedly "postpone" the fake release date(with absolutely no reason or explanation), and nobody knows why!(HAHAHA!, real funny.) It's really pretty simple. Just don't listen to the hype, because it's really not even that serious(it's only a phone anyway), and Nextel will release it only when they feel like it. Just check nextel.com once every week or two to keep yourself posted. That's the only way you'll know for sure. They don't tell their employees $h!t(so don't put your faith in them). Try it if you don't believe me- Here's what you do, call Nextel and ask them about the i930. Record what they tell you. Do the same thing 1 month(or minute, or day, or week) later and record what they say... Do this as often as you like (minutes, days or weeks apart) until the phone is officially released( The more you do it, the funnier it will be...I guarantee you'll laugh at all the different answers you'll get). Go back and check your notes on what Nextel said when you called and compare them to what actually happened(like the release date). You will find no similarity at all! If you believe the hype, you'll just fall for the bull$h!t every time just like everyone else does. Do your homework like I did, and you'll see that it's all hype!*
I just don't understand why any company would give false release dates for new products to the public unless the true release dates were actually going to happen sooner. I have been waiting for so long for this phone and while I wait, I am not buying a new phone or extending my contract. I will use my i90 until a proven nextel or sprint smart phone is available (the only providers available in my area). The sprint windows smart flip-phone is horrible... no expansion and worse than typical nextel battery life (which is pretty bad by itself). Anyways, if I knew I would be waiting for more than a year, then I might have bought an i730, i830, or i860 instead of letting my contract expire (with a much better plan cost than what is now available) and sticking with the same phone for 2+ years. If they were going to lie, then why not say the i930 is scrapped and have everyone buy a i860 before releasing the i930? It's just dumb... I wish I had Cingular service in my area so I could have a mpx220 or razr... If it ever does become available, then I will switch immediately due to this current phone debacle. Also, I think Sprint and Nextel have to figure out who is going to switch networks before they release this phone because I would prefer a CDMA/GSM phone that gets better coverage in the USA than a iDen/GSM.
There are several listings on e-bay for the i930 that claim to have the phone in hand and ready to ship... just in case any of you are interested.
My sisters cousin baby mama brother works at the sanitation department in virginia and he said he saw a i960 box in a garbage can. Somebody already has it. The release date has passed already and they are just only selling it to the big time players right now. I heard Tiger Woods got one.

i spoke to my old regional managet at nextel in the chicago region and according to him if they can gain fcc approval and solve a couple more software bugs(the main one being getting direct connect to work with the windows software) and it passes all nextel tests then hopefull the end of march/early april but he siad its looking more and more like its most likely going to be at the end of this fiscal quater, sometime in june, but even he as a regional manager in a very large market such as chicago is given very few details so who knows, but like i said the big issue right now is getting the direct connect to interface with the windows and being stable
Yo Nextel is on fire right now. They created the first business phone and now they doing it real big for the regular people. The i930 comes out March 25th officially. So Just be ready
nobody listen to theres idots, the i930 is not comin out on the 25th, ill be willing to put a 100 bucks on it, nextel does not release phones on friday, theres contract with motorola states taht all phones be released on monday and the 25th is a friday, the 25th is bull people, get real
i heard that nextel was going to release it in february but called it back after realizing it was too big. theyre trying to make it smaller and are expecting to release it around april
