Sony's Network Walkman NW-HD1 - the world's smallest 20GB MP3 player
So late last night the news crossed the wires that Sony was not only bringing their 40GB VAIO Pocket VGF-AP1L digital audio player to the States, but they're taking direct aim at the iPod (for once) with the Network Walkman NW-HD1, which they claim will be the smallest 20GB MP3 player you can buy (and yes it'll actually play MP3s — er, no we're getting conflicting reports) when it comes out in mid-August. It's not much to look at, but the Network Walkman is supposed to be able to get an astounding thirty hours of battery life on a single charge and have a retail price of $400. The press release is a little thin on details about the Network Walkman making it hard to say whether this'll be enough to pull Sony out of their tailspin, but all we'll say is that this might have been the best MP3 player of 2001.

I have just bought the second network walkman- the hd3- this walkman has an even better looking design and even plays mp3s and wma files. With its small size and large battery life it would look like a winner- but dont be fooled. Just because it is made by sony does not mean it is any good. Why? where can I start- the sonicstage software is among the most dificult to use and impractical softwares I have ever used. It is simply not fit for managing large amounts of music as it has no facility to search your computers hard drive for music- you must open every folder and select the music individually- very difficult when it is sorted into artists folders. When you have done this the process is still very difficult. The software organises the music into seperate folders all with the same name- 'imported files'- so I am left with a list of over 100 fiiles with the same name, useless for managing my music. Also the software does not prevent duplicated files- so you must remember exactly which ones you have downloaded or they might go on 2 or 3 times. This can not be sorted out easily as the player can not delete files itself. When automaticly tranferring the files I also find that the files are downloaded on to my player with no names- imagine trying to sift through 10,000 song files with no name. Also if the program is disrupted, e.g. crashes during tranfer, none of the files are downloaded. These are just some of the problems with the software. The player itself is also hard to use and lack several features such as playlist support and deleting its own tracks.
Oh, and the instructions are in Japanese. This has been the most useless thing I have ever bought, I will soon be returning it for a lower priced, more usable alternative.

hey everyone i just bought an NW-HD1 network walkman yesterday and it is the most awsome mp3 player ive ever seen. yes you do have to convert mp3 to atrac but with sonic stage 2.1 it is really fast and converts and downlowds to the player at the same time like i have a really old school computer AMd K6-2 round 5oomh/z and its fast with most people having 1 gh/z or faster i dont know what you are all complaining about with it being slow. Sony has definatly come out with something that i think makes the ipod look like some yuppy simplistic piece of crap. Because honestly where the fun if its so simple and who really legaly gets thier music these days?, its far easier and cheaper to download of the net. Now the outside of the acutaly plaer isnt shinny metal or cheap plastic its brushed alluminum which looks bitchen and is very durable. Like common its can store 13,000 songs for the same price as an ipod and its smaller. It alos doesnt break as easy and the battery life is longer then any ipod. The other thing is that ipod's use low quality harddrives which corrupt very easily and sony doesnt. Thus to sum it all up i think sony has brought something to the table that might wipe out the ipod all together like im hoping cuz the ipod is just a fad everyone has one all stores are sold out so lets get real people.
HI,
I have a Sony network walkman NW-HD1 20GB mp3 player. About two weeks ago, I tried updating my songs and I am told that my disk is not formated. On the player, its says that "HDD not initialized correctly". Hence, I am unable to play any track and do anything with my player.
Can your tell me how to correct this situation. I really need to get it working.
Thanks
if i lose my cradle can i order another one ? if i still have 1 yr warranty can i go to them and ask for one ?
Sony is currently offering an upgrade for your Network Walkman™ NW-HD1. The upgrade requires a change to the internal firmware. The cost of the upgrade is $20.00 and it only took mine a couple of weeks turn-around by UPS. More stuff comes with the upgrade. See details at:

if your walkman says HD not initialized send it back to sony to get it fixed. Same thing happened to mine, only i dropped it from waist level. I sent it back and i'm expecting it in the mail tomorrow. I dont know how much they'll charge you because it depends on whether or not you busted it... or it's sony's fault for making a glitchy product. if its their fault then they'll fix it. you'll have to pay for shipping though.
you can buy another cradle. it'll cost you about 60bucks though. check sony's site.

Ok I purchased the " Sony’s Network Walkman NW-HD1 - the world’s smallest 20GB MP3 player " had it for about 7months now..plays beautifully, looks awesome BUT I can't even get certain songs that I PURCHASED on the internet into the darn thing (reads copyright probs etc..) and YES you have to convert all the songs into their atrac 3 format FIRST~ using only Sony's Sonicstage software in order to get it into the player..was a real *%%##!!@ hassle at first. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone because of the hassles I went through in the beginning but I do think Sony's got the best looking mp3 players out there...but their software sucks.
ok so i updated my sonicstage and it says i should format.Wich is ok with me if that means all the music will be deleted, and NO harm will be done to the player. If so, should i format from my computer or the player itself?
Last year for Christmas I was gifted with Sony’s new player and I must say it has changed my life for the better. I take it nearly everywhere I go and I’m always making up excuses to bring it places. Maybe an I-pod is better with more abilities, but Sony did a great job with this device and I’m proud to own one. I enjoy it’s compact metallic design and apart from a few very minor glitches that were experienced in extremely cold weather, the device has done very well in helping me through my days.
