Unofficial Windows Mobile 2003 upgrade for Motorola's MPx200 Smartphone
Since it didn't look like Motorola was going to get around to it themselves, an anonymous person in Germany has decided to take matters into their own hands and release an update for Motorola's MPx200 Smartphone so it'll run on the newer Windows Mobile 2003 version of the software rather than the older (and clunkier) Windows Mobile 2002 software that it comes with. The update is totally guerrilla-style — this isn't an official update from either Motorola or any of the carriers — so don't try installing this unless you're prepared to completely mess up your phone and void the warranty.

I figured out the flight mode issue. I knew it was something simple. The problem I have now is that since this morning, I noticed that I show No Service on my phone. I have tried leaving it off with the battery uninstalled for about an hour. Tried reinitializing flight mode and going through the procedures for accessing the SIM card, but to no avail, I still cannot get the phone to gain service. Any thoughts or help is appreciated. Thanks.
I'm tryting to upgrade from 2002 to 2003 smartphone os. I downloaded http://www.bplondon.org/mpx200 but it seems that the actual firmwear is not there, where can I get it?
step 4. of select firmwear, what file do I choose at this point, someone please help!!!
no matter what file I choose it keeps giving me a "Bad news, did not complete..."
I just upgraded to Smartphone 2003 and so far so good. The only issue I have had is that I don't have any of my SIM contacts on my phone. When I swap out the SIM card to a different phone, they are all there, but not on my Smartphone w 2003. It says the "Radio may be off" or something. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
TIA
Mike
Hello , i tried to upgrade , but this is terrobly wrong!
During the installation of the Motorola MPx200 2003 OS , the installation went down and he didn't finished it. THE BIG PROBLEM IS:
my mobile is not going on anymore and the computer doesnt fint it at the usb!
HELP CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!!
To CJ@348:
The CD that came originally with the MPx200 includes the File manager & Picture manager application.
You can reinstall them to the MPx200 with SP2003. IT works. that should solve your picture zooming & file browsing issues.
SP2003 ROM includes a File Manager too.
As for driver, you can download from the OEM of the camera manufacturer. I heard it's compatible with SP2003 but have not tried cos got no camera myself.
Can't remember the link...will post again if I can find it.
BTW, sending big files via IR is not recommended...data can get corrupted due to various factors & disconnections caused by power management features too. Best solution is USB or SD/MMC card transfer.
As for video, it depends on the format. WMP9 in SP2003 allows you to play WMV & AVI formats I believe. No probs with WMV cos I use Windows Media Encoder to convert contents to WMV.
Also, MP3 playback is supported by WMP9 out of the box.
Regards!
Just for fun!
New 2003 ROM for MPx200 appeared for download:

i have the 3.70.12 rom now, i also have/had the 3.70.24 (even thought the number is bigger its still older (according to the engineringscreen??)
So far the only difference i noticed are the better reception (the gsm fix is included right?), different languages..this one has US English, UK English, Italian and German only..but how can i check if it has the T9 Dutch ?? .wich i normally use...if i press and hold the '*' i get T9 english... Another thing i noticed is that the image is like 3 mb bigger , at the start up u see now an extra logo...the one of : mobile operator.. and the registry thingy...
To be honest i didnt really noticed any difference between speeds or booting up...
so plz shed some of your lights on this topic..
and also the main reason why i changed (to test) between those firmwares wasa to check if there are any battery difference ..so for : none

Hello I have install the WM2003 on my mpx200, however activesync doesn't ask me where to install my programs, and I have run out of space on the phone. I have a 1 gig sd card install that works with MP3 on it.
Any ideas I have read that is has to do with the "mounted storage"
I have also tried the 2002 version and that will install programs onto the sd card after I do a hard reset but then I loose half of my menus including file manager.
Thanks
This is too good!!!! After I had instaled the firmware upgrade it took some time for the phone to boot but after that its just fine. Just hope it can help with the battery problem. Shall see for 2 days and let everyone know. Nice look of the 2003 btw. Its a great phone marred by mainly the battery problem, mine lasted about 7 hours on a full charge. The best thing about the phone? The fact that its not in the hands of every tom dick and harry, its unique and gives me great satisfaction with the functionalities as well. Wav ringtones make it cooler!!!

3.70.12 is announced to be newer for a couple of months. GSM fix is included to ROM file.
3.70.23 (I use it) would be installed with GSM fix to upgrade the radio stack to ver. 0.9
Both Roms have Spanish as system and T9 language.
So, what do you recomend!.
Ok this is for Andrew After downloading the files from http://www.bplondon.org/mpx200.On a fresh install of Windows xp doing exactly as setup advises. XP recognizes the phone as Microsoft Ce usb Sync and smartphone INf file will not work as Xp says it does not contain any imformation about device so how do you make this work with XP?

Important: your computer system should be Windows XP. Windows2000 and below often (80 % cases) returns mistake.
Please follow the steps:
1) Switch the smartphone off and remove SIM-card
2) Plug the battery back, but don’t switch on the smartphone.
3) Pressing and keeping the left navigating key plug data cable to a smartphone (keeping the button for a couple of seconds).
4) When the modem driver (smartfon.inf.) is installed it is possible to start program MPX200_Backup
5) If the program has not given out the message (a heap of symbols and button OK), - it means “everything’s fine”, - the program has detected the smartphone.
6) In the top group of switches mark the second line from top (?? 256KB).
7) In the bottom group of switches mark the lowest line (RAW??).
8) Press the button with three points to the right of a field of input and choose the destination path to store received data and simultaneously name it “orig” (.raw extension will appear automatically).
9) Press the top button in group of buttons on the right side in a window of the program (it is marked "???? "). If this button is inactive, the program did not detect your smartphone (see step 5).
In this case it is necessary to switch off again the program and to repeat steps from 3.
10) After pressing the button “????” the reading of the information from your phone should start. The info would be stored in a file specified by you earlier in a step 8.
11) So the received file “orig.raw”, and utilities “FIXIMEI.EXE” and “raw2bin.exe” are stored on disk C:. Then you start start the Command Prompt (dos console) and write there the following command:
C: FIXIMEI.EXE orig.raw fix.raw
A file “fix.raw” should appear in that folder.
12) Also in Command Prompt you should write then a line:
C: raw2bin.exe fix.raw fix.bin
A file “fix.bin” should appear in that folder.
13) In program “MPX200_Backup” we press the button " BIN-> IMG ". In the opened window we choose a file “fix.bin”which we have received before.
14) As a result of a step 13 we get the file “fix.img”
15) Flash your smartphone with “?torola upgrade wizard” using “fix.img”.
Thus you can enable 900MHz band of AT&T branded MPx200. Also you can remove any kind of Operator lock of your phone!
Special thanx to Mr. brutal for step-by-step instruction and to Mr. KasimXP for utilities provided!
Files here
Very important addition to the info above!!!
While fixing 900 band the system starts to conflict detecting haha.raw.
The reason - FIXIMEI program works with C:Documents and SettingsUser Name... ignoring the command line c:...
Solution - just copy the fix.raw & haha.raw to C:Documents and SettingsUser Name... That's it!

Hey guys, I just unlocked my mpx200 and upgraded the firmware to 2003. I also went ahead and got myself a 1GB Sandisk SD card, BUT when I try to transfer music and images it wont save to my SD . .What am I doing wrong ? Please help . .
To Sam
The problem of ActiveSync. You are not able to transfer big files via Windows Explorer. You should use card reader to transfer files (easiest and fast way) or use Total Commander with WM plugin or Servant Salamander 2.5 (it has the built-in plugin)
Well i flashed to the 3.70.12 and i was having problems with saving settings on the phone. When ever i shut the phone off the ringtones i moved over from my SD card would not save on the phone, and i would have to re-add them. So i went ahead and flashed to the 2003 thinking this would help. Well i've come to the same point. Cant shut the phone off with out losing my ring tone. Has anyone had this problem? does anyone know the fix?

1. Who told you to put your custom files (ring tones) to Windows folder?
Files (custom ring tones) should be stored to StorageApplication dataSounds. Or to the other destination but in that case you should fix the registry and define the new place
2. Change the nick - one Andrew is enough at the forum.
Sorry about that ... realized after the post... How does one fix the registry? Thanks for the help.
To Drew
First of all - to modify the registry in 3.70.12 you should install and run SDA Application Unlock program on your phone. 'Cause the registry is protected from modifying in the 3.70.12 ROM.
Then you should install Regedit.Stngr_ARM.cab - the program to modify the registry.
But as I told you - you don't need to modify the registry to make your own custom ringtones. Just copy your files to the folder I mentioned in 381 - and telephone will detect them. That's it.
But if you wanna save the custom tones on SD card - go
[HKEY_CURRENT_USERControlPanelSoundCategories]
You can see 7 keys:
Alarm,
Reminder,
Notification,
System,
Ring,
Incall,
Attenuation.
Enter eack key except the last one.
Find subkey Directory, modify it - instead"Windows" write for example "Mounted VolumeRings". That's it. Now put your sounds to Mounted VolumeRings and enjoy.
ndrew when I click on the link for roms:http://www.smartfon.ws/message.php?msg=950
This is what I get:Произошла ошибка, возможно неправильный URL ? ..I have no clue what it means as I do not speak russian..I was trying to find the rom that you use on your phone but have not had any luck with either of the links you posted ..thanks
Well Andrew,I translated the russian words I received from your link it seems that probably for the first time you may be wrong..lol
Has anyone tested this rom Ben-6-0900-052.img?And if so what were the results..thanks
To tc0566 (post 384)
OK I posted the link in May. Now it's the end of November. What ROM do you need?
To post 385
The link does not work at the moment
To post 386
Why should we test that ROM. The forum here is about WM 2003, and the ROM you mentioned is SP 2002 (and even not the latest)
Just to make everything clear for you I am giving a list of all roms for MPx:

Hi all... Ok, here is the deal... Needless to say, I am confused right now.. Lets start at the begining. I have a Motorola v180 phone. Great phone, but I am upgrading to the mpx200. I ordered my phone yesterday.. getitgn a brand new unlocked one.. should arrive next week. I got an infared port on my computer, so from what I understand, I can sync it up usign that. I am also getting the USB docking station. Now, from what I read and understand... To maximize the battery life and to greatly improve features, I will need to upgrade it to the Window Mobile 2003 version? IS that correct? If so, can someone please EMAIL me step by step instructions on how to do this, preferabley with the files attached to the email, OR with current links to grab them all. Thanks! I would VERY greatly appreciate it! Send it all to udo78 at yahoo . Thanks -=Teej
To Teej
The step-by-step instruction is here in post 139.
About sending you a ROM... Hmmm... I do not think that tomorrow you will start to get letters from all over the world with 30 Mb of ROM and Flasher attached.... Anyway don't start with your phone flashing it. Play a little, read manuals. Find other forums with more info. This place is mostly for .....
well, could you then jsut send me a direct link to the software? one that still works? Thank you so much!
To Teej
http://www.bplondon.org/mpx200
The other places - you should be registered at the forums to get downloads and other cool stuff.
Try also here: http://www.surrealnetworks.com/default.asp
Forum is a little stupid but the download is available.
Thank you you Andrew Post 387 does indeed clear up things.
Thanks Andrew.. you are the man! ;)
One last question.. seeign as this phone DOES have an infrared port.. is there software to make it work like a remote control for a TV? lol.. thanks
To Teej
Remote.... Sure the software is at www.jeyo.com. Called Jeyo remote. But the point is that IRDA has limited distance capabilities. So actually this software is useful at the distance of three feet maximum. So....
What can I really recommend from jeyo.com is a perfect Jeyo Mobile Companion 1.1. That's the software for your telephone. Ok it's not free (15 dollars). If you install it and a special Mobile Registry Editor for PC (small utility to modify the registry from computer) + ActiveSync and Outlook - that's all you need for your MPx200!
If you have further questions - write me a personal mail to shalnow - at - hotmail dot com. I would recommend you to register at my forum (but you should send me nick and pass you would like to have and I will fix registering) When registered - you will get all the custom stuff for free.
warning, if you do this upgrade you cannot use the following :
Album / Camera driver
MMS
Any smartphone 2002 app on the disk
To Stephen_Irl
Awful.... Was it really unexpected for you?
Did you read the forum prior posting? Read carefully post 283.
Do you really need a camera software for the camera-free telephone?
And MMS software has a nice alternative - Resco Photo Viewer or a dozen of other programs.
About any smartphone 2002 app - sorry, it's bullshit. The original SD card comes with the couple of stupid games, file manager, sysinfo and so on. All the original stuff works if you insert the card after flashing the phone. It prompts to install automatically.
Hai....
Just want to know how to set display from full application to basic...so I can set a nice wallpaper without any disturbing unwanted features...seem that 2003 version dont have it..
I upgraded a newly ebay purchased mpx 200 to the wm 2003. I After the update the hard reset procedure would not work. I removed battery and waited for the phone to boot up. I have had a problem with the phone consistantly dropping calls after about two or three minutes with strong signal strength. The batter lasts about 14 hours with moderate use. Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve the dropped call issue?
To John H. Armwood
The idea depends upon the ROM version you had flashed to your phone.
Flash your phone with 3.70.12 (improved Radio Stack). Afterwards we can talk about hte battery life. Your battery drains because of network requests mulfunctioning.
Hi all.. Ok, I finally got my phone today.. fulyl charged it... So far so good.. It WAS unlocked.. then I upgraded to Smartphone 03 and then my phone was LOCKED again! But, lucky me.. I got some good Motorola unlocking software.. So.. It is unlocked and workign great.. but I can't find one feature.. How do I turn on the "I-tap English" feature so I can send out TXT Messages fasteR? Thanks!
OH Yeah.. Seeing as this phone has an IR port.. IS there software out there to use it as a universal remote? ;) Thanks
