No 60GB iPod….for now
We don't believe them for a second, but Apple is now trying to convince everyone that there isn't a 60GB iPod around the corner, probably because it would hurt sales of their newly announced iPod if people knew one with more storage capacity was coming out in a few months. You know that sooner or later they're gonna come out with one, especially given that just a few weeks ago Toshiba accidentally let slip that Apple had made a huge order from them for the new 60GB version of their 1.8-inch hard drive, the same kind used in iPods now. It's really just a matter of when.

Could you imagine if they were using those 60 Gig drives for an updated Newton or slimline, ultra-portable PowerBook?
Like the previous poster said, some of the drives are probably for the smaller powerbooks supposedly coming out towards the beginning of next year.
HOWEVER, I agree with Peter that it's only a matter of time before a 60 GB model appears. Rumor has it that those who won the recent iTunes contest will be getting "special edition" iPods which may have the 60 GB drives.
Perhaps the 60GB are for an even newer design, completely revamped from the current white models. HP is scheduled to start selling HP-branded iPods in September. Apple could be holding a new model back so that while HP will be able to sell the "classic" iPods, only Apple will sell the new, improved, 60GB version.
It's obvious the the 60gb is going to be the video/photo extension of the iPod line and thus requires its own introduction. Clearly, Apple is planning on filling out the rest of the POD functionality of the iPod line. You can see it on the publicity photos...the main menu now contains the MUSIC category. If the iPod was to remain a music only player why would a music category have been added were none was before. I can't wait to see it.
