Not that it's going to happen, but a German magazine says that Bill Gates told them he would immediately make an
offer for Nintendo if the company's majority shareholder, Hiroshi Yamauchi (pictured at right), was willing to sell.
Just think of all the mangled hybrid products they could introduce!
That would be the worst thing that could possibly happen to Nintendo. They're the polar opposites of companies:
Nintendo:
-Software/Hardware Co.
-Polished Products that work right out of the box.
-Solid Tech Support
-Savvy Packaging, Marketing and happy user-base.
Microsoft:
-Software Co.
-Rushed products that require eternal patching...mostly before you even get them.
-Problem with the product? Call the OEM.
-User-base locked into upgrade programs and mercies at the whim of MS programmers.
I don't hate microsoft, but I think Nintendo is fine as it is.
You try making an operating system that works on every Wintel PC on the market and is easy enough for my grandma. If there were better alternatives, people would be using them. Look at the Lindows + Walmart flop if you don't think people have tried.
Regardless, Nintendo would be a valuable company for MS to own, but it doesn't fit in with the positioning of the XBox. MS is marketing towards 20-30's males, and leans towards edgier games to satisfy them. Nintendo is aiming at a more general, traditional audience with its products. The two really don't play well together.
Market positioning aside, Nintendo is an excellent game studio. Their games are some of the most innovative out there, and they have managed to keep the fun in their games despite the obsession with technology in video games these days.
Problem is, the market is BARELY big enough for three consoles. If there were some way to combine MS and Nintendo's console plans without destroying one or the other's niche, it would be great for both companies, since the REAL overlord in gaming these days is Sony. Someone needs to force them out of their complacency. Sony might innovate in their press releases, but their product has been the same old stuff for the past decade.
Nintendo is a bastion of innovation. If they were bought out it would be bad for the industry as a whole. Nintendo has reliably made products that just work right. Perhaps over-simplified, but in general, they're top quality and largely bug free. I'd hate to see that disappear in favor on Microsoft's bottom line.
Microsoft can go on just fine copying Nintendo and anything else they like. I don't know why they'd want to change their business model anyway.

While this would be a seemingly bad move for the video game industry, it would be great for MS and the US economy. The impact of MS on the US economy seems to be one thing that nobody ever mentions when talking about how evil MS is. But the country simply would not be the same without MS.
I'm not a devoted supporter of either company but I would not flame either one of them. Microsoft is actually a fairly decent company. They are not perfect just like any other business in this world. Most people talk Sh*t about MS because they have nothing better to do or they hate Gates because he's so filthy rich. He got that way because he worked for it. People would put down any other company if it were at the top of the food chain. It's called jealousy. People envy the creator. I wish I had as much money as him too.
Quite frankly I don't care what happens with the whole deal. I don't think it would be bad if it didn't go through either.
As if nintendo wasn't hard enough to get started. Here are some tips:
1. blow as hard as you can into the cartriage
2. try the rapid reset method
3. pull the cartriage out just a bit then turn it on.
4. tell a friend to as a 8 ball if it will work today
5. use some rubbing alcohol on the cartriage to make it drunk.
6. bi*ch slapping your nintendo
7. tape your power cord in a way that it will feed power to the nintendo

Oh excuses, excuses, excuses. Microsoft is an inept company who can't make ANYTHING of value... There is a better alternative, Mac OS X. Believe it or not, my computer actually WORKS when I want it to and does what I want it to. Novel idea... Microsoft should look into it.
I don't even want to think of how they would destroy all the great things Nintendo has created.
I called this one. I called this one happening back when Microsoft announced Xbox. I knew this would happen. This is not to say that I am upset.
Oh, and fool who described how to get an NES working, remember this, that console is more than likely OLDER THAN YOU. Be amazed it is still WORKING. Mine is, sure it needs cleaning, but it's old. I keep Rubbing Alcohol and swabs in my entertainment center for my cart games.
But have any of us EVER had a problem with our Gamecubes not working every time we turned it on? I haven't, and I bought USED. Nintendo's been known for reliability since the Gameboy. My old Gameboy still works perfectly... although I prefer to use my GBA for obvious reasons (*cough cough*Better LCD refresh*cough*)
Anybody who disses the Gamecube's hardware, remember this. It renders it's textures twice as fast as your lousy Xbox and four+ times as fast as the PS2. Nintendo isn't about lousy extras, like DVD and CD playback. Nintendo is about making a working product that will work, and last without a massive Gimmick.
Microsoft is about pumping out media beasts that don't work on the first release. The Gamecube has never been rebuilt. The Xbox has been several times [although not as much as the PS2] Lest we forget the Xboxes that overheated and spontanously combusted.
I'm not saying current Xboxes are bad. The hardware is freaking awesome. The Xbox is a dang good powerhouse and all, but it's lttle things that annoy me about it. For one there's what, two games anybody talks about for it? And one's a sequel of the other [Halo] The PS2 and Gamecube have dozens of games that get talked about alot.
Now about Microsoft buying Nintendo. Assuming this happens [and lets not forget the Nintendo buying Sega Rumor] this would spring up the US government within a a few years. Because with Nintendo out of the way, Sony would lose it's standing and go under in the console market. This would leave Microsoft at the top of the heap, and all alone. This is called a MONOPOLY. These aren't legal. Microsoft would be forced to divide up once again.
Overall I don't care if Microsoft buys Nintendo. THis is if Microsoft just owns Nintendo and leaves it at that, allowing Nintendo to work off on it's own while Microsoft reaps the profits. Even if Nintendo's next console outsells Microsoft's, if Microsoft owns Nintendo they still cut a profit.
How in the hell can a stuck up computer company with only one system try to buy a company has many systems and is thinking about buying Sega and Namco to make the NINTENDO TRIFORCE! I think Bill Gates has to take his rich geek ass out of the video game world and stick it to buying "Bush's" second internet.HaHaHa! I'm done.
Quite honestly I don’t care what happens. But Bill Gates needs to pull his head out of his rear end and for once put a product out that is stable enough to actually work for my 65 years grandmother that is afraid to turn it on, in fear of the thing blowing up in her face. Nintendo could teach Bill a thing or two about how to release a product that works right the first TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First off, Bill Gates doesn't deserve to even say the word "Nintendo", much less buy them...in fact, I'm surprised he didn't try to steal it.

First off, Bill Gates doesn't deserve to even say the word "Nintendo", much less buy them...in fact, I'm surprised he didn't try to steal it.
nintendo sucks......the sooner it goes the better (makes more room for X-Box and PS2 games on the shelves at the stores)
The world is goin' crazy!
I'm done.
MS buying Nintendo
Quite honestly I don’t care what happens. But Bill Gates needs to pull his head out of his rear end and for once put a product out that is stable enough to actually work for my 65 years grandmother that is afraid to turn it on, in fear of the thing blowing up in her face. Nintendo could teach Bill a thing or two about how to release a product that works right the first TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
