Movie Gadget Fridays: the new Batmobile
To celebrate the weekly American tradition of opening new movies on Fridays, we're inaugurating a new feature, Movie Gadget Fridays, where we'll highlight one sweet gadget from the world of film, from classic sci-fi flicks to upcoming blockbusters.
This week's movie gadget is the new Batmobile, and this isn't some sissy Val Kilmer version either, this is the Batmobile gone stealth fighter gone SUV. Some fans caught some footage of the new Batmobile in action during filming for the new Batman movie which is being filmed in Chicago right now. Should be out in 2005.

That thing is awful.
you really oughtn't have taken the copyright watermark off the pic.

it's cool looking vehicle, especially if you understand the story behind it in the film, and where it's coming from (it's supposed to be a prototype military combat vehicle that batman gets a hold of).
i thought that the batmobile in the first film was the best, or was it in batman returns....or were they the same....anyway it looked solid, batman n robin mobile looked real tacky
It may have been handy if you needed to plow a field, or help pull a car out of the mud, but it's too low to the ground.
And why would you place all that armour over the car, but then leave the front wheels totaly exposed?
It isn't going to move fast or handle well (look at it's rear), and it isn't going to be driving off-road or ramming anything either.
I like the new batmobile better than the old ones.
absolutely horrendous choice of batmobile design by movie crew. that new car will draw laughs of disgust from audiences rather than awe.
the ugliest vehicle ive ever seen
you guys are nuts, this car rocks.
I was in Chicago for the weekend of Aug. 13th & 14th. I was able to be standing on the curb and have the "batmobile" drive right in front of me. They were shooting a sceen where a few were able to be that close to watch. It was also about 1 in the morning. It was also my first visit to Chicago.
Batman V: Batman Militarized
Glad there's still some fantastical movies like Sky Captain coming out rather than the need to remove the fantastic elements from everything.
those of you that disgrace this vehicle are fools. This will be the best batman movie ever! the first one was the best to date. after that they became all colorful and pretty. not gothic! Batman Begins will explain why he has that vehicle. and hopefully they will show a lot of the ride unlike the previous movies. It looks very military, and I'm sure it will be fast, and if you looked closely the front wheels are very moveable. Imagine it as one of those new RC AT cars that are coming out. Huge tires but can do amazing tricks and turn on a dime. So stop being an assinine person and belittling this soon to be blockbuster hit! and go stroke a pony you fools BATMAN BEGINS!!! *drools*
Shut up all of you!!!
This is so awesome!!! Reminds me of the batmobile from the Frank Miller comic "The Dark Knight Returns." It's good that they're basing this whole movie on the Frank Miller comics with "Year One" as an inspiration for the story and "DKR" for the designs.
This is the FIRST EVER REAL Batmobile, all the others were props, i.e. normal cars with fibreglass etc. stuck on. The Americans couldn't build it cos it was too complicated so they had to ask us English to make it. So, yes, it is the best batmobile ever, becasue it's the first ever real batmobile.

OK, new batmobile is ugly, but looks more real than all the previous. Who said it's supposed to look nice? Mutant mix of Lamborgini and Hummer. WOW!
It corners like **it, lifting the front wheel in that last scene. Looks much better doing the powerslide in the add.
The origin of this Batmobile "is" military.. It was designed as a "bridging vehicle.... able to jump large gaps and create a bridge platform (that explains the jet booster nozzle out the back) I just saw the movie yesterday and it is the best film so far, yeas even better then the Michael Keaton/ Jack Nicholson film.... This movie is more "realistic" than any of the others. All of Batmans "gadgets" are of a military or prototype background and all have real world uses....no fake pocket bat-lasers or bat-arangs.... The only thing mildly hokey is his cape/flight system, and even that is needed for continuity to the comics... So before you critize the developers and laugh at how ugly the car is(and yes it is ugly) Go se the movie.. then come back and post criticizms
I don't know what the fuck those busta's are say'in when they be diss'in on the new batmobile but that shit keeps it gangsta as fuck!!! It's gorgeous, functional, realistic, and awesome!!! The technology in the movie was all realistic (yes, even all of the schtick with the cape; we have that kind of technology today)and his background as a shinobi was just perfect!!! And for you "Justin", ever think that the wheels themselves could be plated with a powerful, dense fiber that is also flexible and bulletproof? Have you ever researched carbon nano-tubes? Well, check them out then post your bullshit, biotch!!! And finally, have you actually seem the movie "Justin"? the damn thing is semi-flexible and built like a damn low-strung hummer!!! What could be better for off-road driving?
P.S.
Kudos to all my gangsta hommies out there who gave mad-props to the batmobile and the new movie!!! That's how you keep that shit gangsta!!!
for the comment made by justin previously.
this batmobile does 0-60 in 5.3 seconds, and has a 350 v-8 vette engine, not bad for a field plower as you put it. do the research before you post. all other batmobiles were props, even the one in the 1990 movies was a corvette with a fiberglass shell. this one is fully functional.
IMHO, this is the most realistic and best looking batmobile i have seen yet. and i loved the one from the 1990 movie (design wise). after the first movie they got too cartoonish i mean in the last movie with the neon i mean come on the dark night driving a car that is louder than the las vegas strip on the fourth of july. This new one does justice and reality to the franchise.
IN REAL LIFE: They mounted cameras to a AMG ML55 (very expensive ultra fast suv) to film the 100 plus mile per hour chase scenes. THE BATMOBILE SMOKED IT. They performed jump stunts with it and kept going, they didnt damage it (no jump it its crashed replace it with another). They did use a full size hollow shell launched from an air canon for a couple of the extreme jump shots. Also a radio controlled model in one of the scenes untouched by computer special effects see if you can point it out. It corners very well. Totally built from scratch no doner car underneath, not a corvette with fiberglass body glued on. Real aircraft cockpit grafted in. The jet engine mounted on the back IS A REAL JET ENGINE (modified torch on the first movie). High powered modified small block chevy engine. The guns are real... well, real armaments as a good ENGLISH FRIEND OF MINE TOLD ME. This one is closer to real than any of them IT REALY DOES WHAT YOU SEE IN THE MOVIE.
Oh and gangsta kudo boy: you glow in the dark, speak proper english, no one here wants to have to try to figure out what you are saying . As for the looks of the batmobile. Have any of you took a close look at a bat lately? The vehicles appearance is quite proper.
