Movie Gadget Friday: Logan's Run Life Clock
Last week on "Movie Gadget Friday" we showcased the Alien Motion Tracker, this week we present the Logan's Run Life Clock.
Back in 1976 director Michael Anderson gave us a glimpse of a perfect future where no one lives past 30 and we're all dressed up ready to disco. Each human at birth gets a "Life Clock" jewel implanted in their hand which starts to blink as they reach 30, at which point they must go to the "Carousel" to be renewed in a fiery ritual.

what's the deal? it was in the movie? that's it? no store selling it online?
At least the gun described in the book. It had multiple settings that fired numerous types of projectiles. One sounded like metal ribbons that would shread someone to pieces.
Loved the movie, but the book was great! Having to cut a square inch of skin (or was it a cubic inch) as payment for something (I can't remember now, read it around 20 years ago). That was nasty.
Has anyone heard anything more about the remake http://imdb.com/title/tt0402344/ that's supposedly in the works? How close to the books it's going to be, etc?
I was so excited when this feature came up on my feed but its been a pretty disappointing column so far. The pictures arent that good/interesting. The piece of writing that accompanies the pictures says nothing, and the links are clunky/lazy. In its current format its far too dependent on readers comments for making it at all worthwhile.
Get your act together! Lets have the flesh gun and the hydro gun from eXistenZ and how these relate to Cronenbergs obsession with anal penetration.
Ahnk. Runner!!!
this feature is a really good idea, but it has been poorly executed so far. We should get a bit of "insider" knowlege as to how these devices work, or maybe even some information on how they could be contructed in real life (as opposed to the fake machines they would use in a film.)
the feature is a new one, the idea was a quick blurb about a movie gadget-- but ya'll are hungry for more, so we'll deliver. check back next week for an expanded version with more meat.
The really disappointing thing with this article is that with the 'Alien' motion tracker last week you could actually buy a replica, but I see no mention here of where we can have a jewel implanted in our hands to make sure we die at 30, or even the opportunity to run away with Jenny Agutter. I think in all of these cases (and especially the last) I'd be justified in calling you bastards ;-)
I've had a few conversations about the life clock crystal. Would it be worth it... having a 'deathday' at age thirty in exchange for a utopian life with no cares. 30 years of bliss in a society with no wars, no diseases, no sexual judgements and no polution. No worries of aging, and the pains that go with it. No real understanding of what you'd be missing by not growing old, so I suspect their would be less regretts. At 30 you take a ride on the "Carousel and your last moments of life are spent 'flying.' Then you burst into flames as you get vaporized by lazers. I imagine death would be instant. It might be worth it, if one was totally unquestioning about being reborn as they're led to believe. For me, one big downside would be having to wear coloured clothes to match your age. What if you don't look good in blue and you reached the 'Blue Age.' I guess some instant laser surgery could alter one in a way that made them look good in blue. And clothes seemed to only be worn when teleporting to a sexual rendevous or walking to the 'Love Shop' (where all sex is in slow motion. hmmm) Not knowing any other options in life (except running) would make the 30th birthday easier to accept. And for a chance to snuggle with a younger Michael York...
On another note, friends and I were trying to devise a red flashing crystal that would fit in our palm so we could be 'runners' for Halloween. We couldn't think of a solution that didn't look too bulky or strapped on. Any ideas?
And, just for the geeks like myself: The Logans Run DVD has an easter egg in it. There is a picture of a hand with a crystal in it on the menu screen. You can move the cursor over the crystal (instead of over the menu options) and it gives you a screen listing what colours are applied to what age group.
