If you can run decently World of Warcraft on the 1.6 GHz I would love it. Memory and the lack of a standard Bluetooth module are drawbacks of course.

How can memory be a drawback if you can upgrade it to 2GB? And it would be nice if bluetooth were built-in, but it is not worth making everyone pay for it. It's fine as an option.
Maikeru @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
Sleek! Quite the example of miniturization (without the "guts" shot I'd think it was merely a 17" Apple monitor). Seems to make up for the strangeness of the original iMac and is reminiscent of the 25th anniversary Mac. Now if they'd just add a scroll wheel/button to their Kubrick-friendly mouse (they wouldn't need to have a right click or anything, just a scroll wheel/with a button that toggled scroll).
Actually if they had a touch scroll wheel like the ones on the last few generations of iPod (or for that matter the current line of HP laptops) and made the form of it in a line, that would truely fit their purity of form/simplicity feel to their current offeringsjust run your finger in/on the slightly bevel-denoted area in the center of the mouse to scroll.

Actually I like the "old" iMac giving many more choices regarding screen adjustments ... up/down, forward/back, in/out and swivel.
It appears that front/back tilt is the only choice here.... am I missing someting?
Kapila Wimalaratne @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
I think the new iMac is a great step forward (esp. the optical audio out and VGA output), but I would have liked to have seen:
- 23" model (they already have the 23" standalone display)
- FW800 port (how is the FW800 market going to grow if Apple
doesn't put the port in all it's boxes?)

Add the EyeTV, double sticked to the back, and the vesa mount. Set Up a local audio stream with nicecast and tune into it with itunes. Then Connect to the Airport Express for audio streaming for wireless speakers.
ooooh and then add the iBiz virtual keyboard and i am in bidness

Perfect for students! Takes up little space on desk. Easy to carry around.
Less is more.

Some asshat has labelled the iMac as a "missed opportunity"
http://news.com.com/Commentary%3A+Apple%27s+missed+opportunity/2030-1042_3-5331861.html
purely on the basis that it doesn't include built in 802.11g, bluetooth and a TV tuner card!
1) Anyone can add 802.11g and bluetooth for not a lot of money and I'm happy that Apple isn't forcing people who don't want these
2) Why would Apple wreck the market for EyeTV which is a great Mac TV solution?
Pete Smithsuth @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
Add the 20" cinema screen to the 20" iMac G5 and BAM! you get dual screen that looks almost identical
jerome @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
yeah yeah it looks pretty good but apple are just trying to cram to much in to something too small and pretty, there'll be complaints much like the 4g ipod and the g5powermac.
and also to the people complaing about no b/took and airport built and not enough memory if it had all those things, then it would practicaly be a powermac
pkradd @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
The website photos are so overly photoshopped that the personality of the new iMac can't be seen. In person it is much better looking with a translucent outer shell and an off white inner shell. Here's where you can view some photos taken at the Expo:

Interesting insight garnered from an online interview about the iMac:
"And we still have the ability to swivel left and right, but it does it on the entire base; we didn't need to create an arm to do that. There are little skids on the bottom -- this achieves much of the same things [as the G4 iMac] in a different way and, we think, in a better way."
Plus, with it's significantly smaller footprint and lighter weight the new iMac is actually *more* adjustable than the old iMac (e.g. that swizzle arm only ever went around about 180 degrees).

Frankly I am not impressed. Its basically an Apple G5 Laptop with the screen folded back, and put up on a stick.
For my money, I will buy the G5 Laptop and have portablity with my computing.
Sorry Apple, you missed the mark on this one.
Wayne Cram @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
First of all.. 20" in an all in one and you're not impressed? And if you haven't noticed it's $1,299 at the low end. When they come out with a G5 notebook, for anything other than a 12" screen (if they can make it work at all at that size) you're looking at at least $2,499. The iMac is a consumer box... and you're not always going to be taking your printers, speakers and whatever with you... i think that this is an astonishing desktop package. And if you add in OS X, iLife and the rest, it's the best value going.
Sorry, dude. not persuaded by your argument in the least.
Wayne Cram @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
that's $1,299 for a 17" laptop on a stick. Not that that hurts my argument, but there you go.

I am a pc user on a laptop. I want to move to mac (when i can scrape a few coppers together). I was originally thinking of getting another laptop but then saw this brilliant system. For me it offers the same features as a laptop, small componant size, space saver and smart design. People are complaining about certain features such as bluetooth and the firewire but i say compared to many pc's this is brilliant. Also those people who say i want ports on the side of the screen, well that kinda defeats the object of having all the ports in one place making the whole thing tidy. Surely it not gunna kill ya to stand up and lean round back to plug a cable in, think of the poor users on pc's who have their tower on floor, they gotta actually use more energy. This is brilliant and convinces me to move to the mac, so much in so little. I say to those who critisize (spelt badly) go and build your own system, including componants in something so small and compact that actually works.

i need help with my imac. i need to know how to use it.
profresh @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
I have just recieved my boxfresh 20" G5 Imac and Ipod after waiting a month and a half for delivery.
A long time to wait, i understand apple were unable to meet initial supply demands.
I have been a mac user for six years, previously owning two original imac's (dvdSE).
I had the Imac beefed up with a 250gb HD and 2gig ram (from 3rd party).
Also had the bluetooth module installed plus wifi keyboard and mouse.
The Imac G5 is a joy.
Breezing through 3d applications, sequences of photoshop CS filters, and huge file transfers.
Its build quality is of incredible standard, and it is of course beautiful to both the sight and touch.
the bluetooth features have been the biggest change for me as a mac user, and make my work space so much more versatile.
the screen is also amazing.
There is no arguement that this is the best personal computer on the market at the moment.
Its so complete.
why people still use pc's baffles me.
i guess its the same reason some people still live in Barnsley.

I will wait until they release a g5 laptop. The current laptops are dinosours. how long has the g4 since the end of the titanium been offered? with no real updates? No good. This imac is an "imac" its fine as what it is but it is obviously not a laptop (unless it doesnt require a plug to work). I want to buy a apple laptop but I will not buy until they get the g5 right in a laptop. I know it will probably come down to there server cpu being used but I will wait. Apple! hire more engineers instead of spending all your money paying rockstars to advertise your eyepod!!!

Bought the G5 7 months ago, broke down twice and diagnosed as a logic board failure. Service from the ApleCare was bad and later, was informed that there's a worldwide shortage in supply of logic board and no service can be made. Is this Apple or just a rotting one? In the 1st place, why would a 'reliable' PC break down twice?
Mark @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
Is there any way i can install a bluetooth card into my 20" G5? I didn't get either airport or bluetooth installed when i bought it.
Jayde @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
Mark,
You will have to change the midplane (motherboard) to get the built in Bluetooth. That is what applecare told me. To get bluetooth (so that you can use that fancy wireless keyboard and mouse) You would need to sacrifice a USB port for the module. I for one love my iMac (just got it two weeks ago). My first MAC... I hope none of these little horror stories about the new iMacs come up. It seems to be only affecting people who bought the first run of iMacs when they came out. Hopefully adjustments were made in the production to remedy the early glitches... At least that is what I'm hoping.
Pat @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
My iMac G5 has been in the shop for over a week now, one of many waiting for repair of a midplane board failure. 340 or so of the posts reagrding this on the Apple support site can be found at http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?50@@.68a31fdd
