AT&T Wireless' ogo is a go go
Not to be confused with the OQO, the Ojo, or the OKO, AT&T Wireless is getting ready to unleash the ogo, a clamshell-style mobile communicator with a mini QWERTY keyboard. It feels an awful lot like it's their response to the Sidekick 2 (only without the built-in cellphone or digital camera) but the trained eye sees they're really more closely targeting Motorola's IMfree. The ogo is pretty much just for doing instant messaging (AIM, MSN, and Yahoo come pre-installed), SMS text messaging, and email, plus it uses use IXI Mobile's Bluetooth-based Personal Mobile Gateway technology if you have a hankering for hooking the ogo up to other gadgets. The best part though? Service will be cheap, just fifteen bucks a month for current AT&T Wireless customers (read: just in reach of all those teens who want to break free of the shackles of T9 texting).

Run away as FAST as you can! I've had this all of 48 hours and it has not worked. They,ATT, knows there is an issue with the mail server. It casues the device to lock. There is no know time frame for resolution. Plus the fact that Cingular has not said tehy will support this device after the merger. I just returned mine today.

I was so excited about Ogo that I ran and bought mine as soon as they became available...BIG mistake. It took me two days of constant phone calls to tech support people, some of whom were very rude, to even get my Ogo to complete the basic setup wizard. One tech support person tried telling me they couldn't help me without the 10 digit phone number for my device...which you don't even GET until the setup wizard is complete. Another told me that she had "been on vacation for two weeks and had not been at work so she didn't know anything about the ogo yet". Then they tried insisting that my credit card was declined and that was why the setup was failing....I wasn't using a credit card....it was a mastercard debit, and there was plenty of balance on my account. They then tried telling me that the bank had the wrong zip code listed for my address...yeah, right....They then took a callback number, but never called. Later that night I looked over and realized my Ogo had moved on to the next screen and was working. So after two days when my device was finally activated I thought everything would finally work out.....WRONG. I can barely get any signal anywhere....there is none in my house, very little outside in my yard...and sporadically at work and other places I have tried. If I move more than two inches while typing, it loses signal and signs off. Every 10 minutes or so, my screen goes to grey and freezes up in the middle of what I am doing and just locks like that. Imagine a frozen computer with no cntl-alt-delete and you get the picture. When it DOES have some signal it only pulls in my mail now and then...most of the time it just says mail server error. Most of the time it also gives errors regarding my buddy list being unavailable. Other times it just goes completely black, the same as the sleep mode does, but won't come back. I have had it for a week now, and been able to actively use it for maybe 5 minutes a day here and there. As far as I am concerned, this device is NOT ready to be on the market....it is a great concept, but they need to go back and make sure it actually WORKS before putting it on the market.

I just got my new Ogo a few days ago, but I had some real trouble setting it up. Now, it is all working and I'm very very happy with it. Chattin on Aim is awesome and easy. The texting is good also, it does wut it says it does so no complaints from me.

Can't even get to their website this morning, after I saw the advertisement on Yahoo and tried to read up for a possible Christmas present. I should know better than to trust ANYTHING AT&T puts out. They have been horrible for years.
Kayla @ Dec 19th 2005 12:04AM
I am a senior in high school, everyone knows senior year is a breeze so you have nothing to do BUT text. My mom no longer pays for my cell phone, I work but I still can't afford a full cell bill. This would be perfect for me, 80% of my cell usage is texting. I'll definately come back and let you know if it's going to please any of the other teens AT&T is trying to sell this thing too.
Nameless @ Dec 19th 2005 12:04AM
I just bought the Ogo last night. I'm still trying to get it connected through the wizard. It's been trying for 9 hrs already. If it's not up by tomorrow I'm calling their customer service.

I am not sure about the whole setting part, because my husband bought it for me and took care of that. He did not complain about it though.
I have been using it for over a month now, and at this point I can't do without it. I read my emails from both my Comcast and my Yahoo accounts, and I chat with my hubby and my brother in Israel occasionally, wherever I am.
I did not have connection (G) twice, in over a month period (which I wish I could say the same about my Cingular cell phone). In both time the problem was resolved immediately after I 'rebooted' it.
I've mainly been using this for emails, I can't say much about the chat feature, though it always worked when I needed it.
Overall I think it's the hottest gadget since the cell phone invention. I am not sure how I did without it before. Sometime I do my homework in the living room and check my email and chat from my OGO because I am too lazy to turn my computer on... I usually don't write in these websites, but I just saw some people were concerned about the device, and wanted to give you a different perspective of things.

I received my ogo today and my experience with it was pretty good. I live in bangor Maine which only has a sliver of at&t wireless coverage so after reading this I was a bit concerned about how it would perform. I was fully set up and chatting within about 20 minutes. My theory as to why it 'seems' to take so long for others is I noticed while it was activating my account the screen would go black, initially I thought this was a power saving feature, however, I noticed the charging status light would come on and off depending on whether the screen was black or not. So I grabbed it and hit the space key and the light turned off and it was still on the activation screen, so I watched a little tv and hit the space key everytime it went black. A little annoying but I would imagine less so then staring at it for hours and hours and talking to smart mouth tech support people. So, maybe thats the issue, who knows maybe I was just lucky.
Other impressions, the chatting function works awesome, e-mail I haven't tried yet, the keyboard is solid and pretty easy to type on, the case itself feels kind of....I don't want to say flimsy, but flimsy. I dunno, I've never been a big fan of plastic shells. I'm still letting it charge its mandatory 12 hours so after work tomorrow I'll post as to how well it handled about town.

I've been doing the research and would die for a Blackberry but being as frugal as I am, I can't justify the monthly fees that most of the providers charge.
I finally narrowed the playing field down to the ATT Ogo and the T-mobile sidekick. ATT Ogo won on price, both for the device and for the monthly service (about $10 a month more inexpensive).
One month later, I am completely satisfied with the decision to go with the Ogo. Meeting and exceeding all of my expectations.
Setup was fast, efficient, and service is solid.
Very happy with the device.
John F. @ Dec 19th 2005 12:04AM
I'm a potential customer for the Ogo not because I am a teen in High School but because I am hearing impaired and the best way for me to stay in touch with people through wireless access is through Text messaging, email or Instant Messages.
I currently use the Motorola T900 text pager but with how few features there are on it and hwo ancient it is becoming, I've been looking elsewhere.
The Ogo intruiges me but I have heard many bad thing sabout AT and T wqireless.... Then again I have heard many bad things about T-Mobile pertaining to the Sidekick (not the device itself but their service and coverage). I'm ready for the next step but to go for Ogo or Sidekick 2 seems like a risk from everything I have been reading.

Jus brought D OGO, N Hawaii, OGO is also known as Seaweed. I was complaining about my kid's TXT bill was higher than D Voice bill. $0.45/min. I figger it would take longer2tap a msg, that should save me&w/unlmtd TXT it should work. Took me a while2figger it out, but kid had it going in a couple of minuets. Only Doc came w/it was d terms&how2activate. Nothing on How2Operate or features. Bummers on accepting only1 IM/Email account per IP. Have2logout everytime2chk other mailboxes/IM. Called d#on d screen&got passed2 8diff pepo n7diff depts. 2.5hrs L8r it's working gr8. ATT has no assy4this. If they reading this, I'd like an external keyboard or a way2hook it2my desktop. Scale of 1/5 I give it a4, but a 1in ease of setup.

I heard alot of people saying that the Ogo is not worth buying for alot of different reasons but I just ordered one myself and I should be receiving it soon, the thing that I appreciate about this device is that it just does emails and text messages. I have a cell phone and honestly I dont even talk on it much. All I do is message my friends. And I find it a waste paying a $40 phone bill when I barely talk on it. I haven't got my Ogo yet but when i get it in the next couple days and activate it I will be back to give the results.
Tahra @ Dec 19th 2005 12:04AM
Hey everyone...
I've also been scared and somewhat talked out of ordering my OGO after reading the comments on this site, but after battleing back and forth with myself...I decided to go ahead and order. The OGO is meant to target young kids and it has, me and a bunch of friends of mine are ordering ours this weekend and should be recieving them soon. I have a SPRINT phone and their service is not good at all, not to mention the not so great rate plans with expensive internet use and text rates. So the OGO is perfect for me because it allows me to do everything that I cannot do on my Sprint for a lot less than expected.
I, like many others, do not have a lot of patience that may be involved in setting the device up; but it seems like once the device starts working it is worth the wait. Plz email me with any pointers to using this device at www.ladybambam13@yahoo.com I will be sure to post my views and comments on the OGO once I recieve it to let all other viewers of this site know my ideas on the OGO and the AT&T service. But overall I think it is a wonderful idea that should work great! AT&T should consider an OGO 2 in the future that includes a camera/video, and actual phone/GO PHONE service...this would help with sells a lot I think. Plz email me with help on the device though! Thanks a bunch and you'll hear from me soon!

I have had the Ogo for about a week now. It works well for what it is supposed to do. It really is a good device for parents to give to their teens/tweens to keep in touch without worrying about running up the cost of a cell phone bill. Also for those who want to check and reply to e-mail without buying a blackberry or being tied to a computer. Overall I feel if this is what you need it for, specifically IM/E-mail/SMS it is worth the $18/month. My only negative comment is the lack of customizable notifications within the device itself. It notifies you for anything (buddies/online, checking of mail and for no apparent reason sometimes) causing it to be somewhat of a nuisance when friends sign on or off. I usually just keep notifications off and check it every so often.
Kelly @ Dec 19th 2005 12:04AM
Hi everyone. I'm trying to decide if i want to get the Ogo. I've read everyone's comments about it. Some have negative things and some has positive thing to say about the Ogo. I'm gonna go with the positive comments. For what the Ogo cost, you really can't expect it to work like a computer or the Sidekick. As long as the text messaging works and i can check my emails, that's all that matter to me. So i think my mind is made up. I'm gonna get the Ogo.
Steven H @ Dec 19th 2005 12:04AM
I am considering purchasing the Ogo especially now for $49.99 but after reading these comments, I don't know. It looks like back in October there was a lot of trouble with network and lock-up. Now as I read on in Nov and Dec I don't hear that as much. I would like to know if those individuals in Oct and early Nov is still having the same problems or has it gotten better.

I order my Ogo from the website. After seeing a ad bar from it on my yahoo mail.I wanted to get a mobile IM device for a while and at the price I got in online.I couldn't pass it up.Since it was instant rebate and free shipping and case from the website. It did take a few weeks to complete my order. They didn't send it till after christmas. But it was here on the following tuesday.Well I called Cingular before and the lady told me to go to there store and they will set me up.But when I called again after getting the device. The same lady didn't want to bother helping me set it up.Mostly saying its AT&T.Well you don't really need there help anyways.Just open the package turn it on.Well your suppose to wait 12 hours to charge.Of course I couldn't wait lol.I began setting up my acccount.Well I didn't recieve any of the problems like others setting up.In fact only took less then 20 mins to get it going.I use my debit card too.Got both accounts working.Yahoo and MSN.I do get some problems like others no signal and mail account problems. But that is do to the signal mostly being low.Other than that it was working fine with me.Like I said before I didn't charge the battery yet.It was only 28% and I was using around my city.Sending IM's,etc.Best bet is to buy it online and watch for prices.Because I notice if you buy it at the right time for there holiday promotion. You can get it like me for $49.99.Or $79.99,just depends on the time you buy it.I really like using it and being able to chat with my friends overseas doing IM or Email. For being first generation. Its cool for now.I just hope they do improve on it in the next generation model.
Terrance @ Dec 19th 2005 12:04AM
The OGO is definitely an O-NO! It's the way to go if you like getting booted from the messenger every 3 to 5 minutes or sometimes even less... Or if you can't even send a message because of system errors... THEN, they tell you at the so-called customer support that they are aware of the problem but don't have any type of consolation as to when or HOW it'll be rectified... The way it's been working for me, the service should be absolutely free... AT&T should be ashamed for putting a device as scandalous as this on the market... I feel like a test puppy with equipment that works whenever it wants to and not when you need it to... My main issue is staying connected. I can understand being booted sometimes because it's bound to happen... but for 3 days straight? Come on now! It's ridiculous... AND, before I go... if you view your email on the O-NO and decide to delete it, MAKE SURE YOU DELETE IT LOCALLY AND NOT ALL OVA THE PLACE B/C IT DELETES IT FROM YOUR ACTUAL EMAIL ON YOUR PC AND IT DOESN'T EVEN GO TEMPORARILY TO THE TRASH SO YOU CAN RETRIEVE IT! I LOST SOME IMPORTANT EMAILS DUE TO THAT. AND IT WOULDA BEEN HELPFUL IF THE THING CAME WITH SOME KIND OF INSTRUCTIONS. THE PAMPLET (NOT A MANUAL) THAT COMES WITH IT SPENDS MORE TIME TELLING YOU ABOUT A BUNCH OF "NOTHING" THAN EXPLAINING FEATURES... I could just throw this thing, and I'm 1 step away from sending it back for a refund! IF they don't give me retarded excuses. I consulted with them about the back cover being loose and having it exchanged, and don't you know the idiot I talked to said I had to buy another one with my OWN money and then be reimbursed for the purchase... I was like WTH kind of replacement policy is that... people in O-NO support need Jesus! and AT&T definitely need Jesus!

For what it is, the OGO is a good tool. I got mine today, setup took less than 10 minutes, and service was excellent. For people who have a phone and just need something for email/IM I highly suggest looking into it. Most AT&T or Cingular stores carry them
Sherry McDonald @ Dec 19th 2005 12:04AM
I have had OGO for months now and it's fantastic. I had no problems setting it up and activating it and I've had no problems since then. I do heavy amounts of email and it handles it like a breeze. There is only one improvement I can think of that would make my use perfect and that is if it were able to d/l my GMail. Other than that, it's a great tool and is well worth the money.
Cleo @ Dec 19th 2005 12:04AM

I love my Ogo.
I bought mine a few months ago, and absolutly love it. The only thing that I wish it had was more battery life, and that it could actually SURF the internet like the Sidekick II. But I'm not too keen on it having a phone attached- unless I could transfer my regular cell number.
But I highly recommend this and already a couple of friends have bought and enjoy them.

Why don't u try resetting your OGO.
1. go to main screen
2. click on "device"
3. click on "reset"
if that doesnt work, go to the main screen and click on "help" to chat live with Tech Support.

Ogo Lover @ Dec 19th 2005 12:04AM
Next month I'll have had my Ogo for a year. I ABSOLUTELY love it! I like it more than my phone. Initially when I bought it AT&T had some horrible text messaging plans and I find that I would much rather text than talk. And when I first got it I didn't have internet access at home, so I have gotten A LOT of use out of it! Although now with the Sidekick 2 becoming more and more common I find that I am a little bit envious of it. I wish the Ogo could surf the web, but I console myself by saying that my monthly bill is half of what the Sidekick data plan is. Plus with the Sidekick you are required to sign a 1 year contract. I don't see me discontinuing my Ogo service anytime soon, but I love that it's just a month to month service.
I'm a little bit surprised about how many comments there have been about the Ogo. Like I said I've had it for a year, but I've never known anyone else that's had one. And whenever I use it in public most people have never even seen or heard of it before.
ced @ Dec 19th 2005 12:04AM

Ben @ Dec 27th 2005 3:46PM
I purchased my Ogo just one year ago, ditched my cellular phone, and now only use mobile email, SMS, and IMS. I have not had any problems. The 17.00 per month plan is great, and I spend 1/3 of what I used to on a cell phone. The best part of using text only is that I actually use my home phone more often, and I now have more to say to my friends when we hang out in person.
