Play the PlayStation Portable… in Japan
Sony's been showing off the PlayStation Portable at the Tokyo Games Show and AV Watch was there (with tons of pics, of course). Most disturbing part: to prevent anyone from "accidentally" walking off with one, Sony kept all their PlayStation Portable demonstatration consoles strapped to these trade show girls, forcing geeks to make friendly with the fairer sex if they actually wanted to play with one (a PSP, that is).
[Thanks, Alan]

How much does that girl weigh? I'd guess about 90 pounds, I'm pretty sure I could carry her AND the PSP outta there if I really wanted to.
roo @ Dec 19th 2005 12:04AM
If you could carry her out of there, would you really fret about bringing the PSP with you?

Are you going to have to wear all of that equipment to use the PSP for more than a few hours? As if it wasn't big enough already. People already make fun of us geeks for wearing a Treo on our hip. What will happen with one of these giant metal holsters for a game system?

Morale of the story: if your game or product can't stand on it's own two feet. If the hype for it is not enough. Add sex appeal and bind it to the product. I'm sure that this gesture was well received (albeit in a professional tone) by the repressed culture which brought us our favorite hentai.

No, your wife can NOT be used as a battery pack. This a propritary format that replaces your wife; therefore easing the process when she inevitably leaves due to the time consumed playing too many portable video games. :)
MF @ Dec 19th 2005 12:04AM
Man, that PSP is really big. It looks to be twice the size than anything else out there.
I'll need to buy a backpack for carrying it.
Bigun @ Dec 19th 2005 12:04AM
Maybe to overcompensate for something?
How many buttons are on that thing too?

I'm still waiting for everything that was promised with the PS2. I was supposed to be able to download movies and music to it. I was also supposed to get Toy Story-like graphics. I feel ripped off and there is no way $ony is getting me to buy another fragile system full of empty promises.

What the hell? This is such a pathetic example of sexism I'm astounded you guys can do this and not blush.
I've gotta assume the only reason is you think you're in the boys' showers at high school and there are no girls in sight.
Well wise up: if you want as wide an audience as possible for your website, you'd better bloody well not treat it as the boys' showers.
I think PlayStation's pathetic for using pretty women to promote their gadgets. What a stupid way of telling 50% of the population that they're not interested in selling to them.
I think Engadget's perpetrating sexism by focussing on the tits rather than the gadget.
And I'm appalled by the readers' comments here. I'm guessing the women who STARTED reading this thread stopped pretty quick.
Engadget: are you REALLY trying to scare away your women readers?
Mike S. @ Dec 19th 2005 12:04AM
I dunno, I thought the whole point of Engadget's post was to take the piss out of what Sony was doing, not promote it. I thought it was silly, not sexist.
michelle @ Dec 19th 2005 12:04AM
Jill, you must be one of those types who goes around looking for any reason to be offended so you can launch into a shrewish rant accusing people of sexism. Nothing at all in Peter's article is in the slighest bit sexist.
I'm confident that engadget has plenty of women readers who aren't looking for trouble and aren't offended by this article at all. You might not believe it, but some of them might even appreciate a pretty girl advertising a product.
Word to the wise, not all women spend their lives feeling oppressed and running around trying to force their Feminism 101 theories on everyone.

As a female (and heterosexual) geek, I read this line and switched off. The article was obviously addressed to the boys.

Not hard to find one, even if you're not looking. The initial article makes a bit of a joke, but the comments that took off from there certainly alienated me, and I'm a man.
