The Audiovox PPC-6601 and PPC-6600: Sprint's new Pocket PC Phones
There have been rumors since April that Sprint would carry the CU928, Daxian's sweet new Pocket PC Phone (and yes, the XDA III/MDA III is the GSM/GPRS version of this), but now it's official. And as usual, don't shouldn't waste your time calling up Sprint asking for the Daxian CU928 since it's now known as the Audiovox PPC-6601 (it's like Audiovox has become the brand name of last resort for wireless carriers who feel like they gotta slap something vaguely recognizable on there). Anyway, we more or less already knew the specs on this one, but here's the recap: 128MB of memory, 400MHz processor, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth (which we're sure will be crippled because it's Sprint), and an SDIO expansion card slot (but no built-in 802.11b WiFi like with the XDA III). There will also be a version called the PPC-6600 that comes with a built-in VGA quality digital camera. Retail price is $629.99.

Unless something has recently changed, this article misses the most important feature of the phone: EV-DO. Meaning 300-500 kbps wherever available on the sprint network. Sprint should be offering EV-DO in many cities shortly, and the phone should work on 1xRTT (with 1xRTT speeds) as well.
been waiting for a decent pda phone combo from sprint for a while...WooHoo!
Too bad SPCS can't support this device. I've had one for two weeks and had the beep duing call problem and SPCS is clueless. AudioVox finally won't return emails despite "rumors" that a fix is in the works. My advice buy this device and activate it from VZN Business. Maybe that will get SPCS's attention.

DO WE KNOW WHEN THE PPC-6600 WITH THE CAMARA WILL BE COMING OUT???????????

Sprint is not and will not disable the Bluetooth connectivity on the 6601, much like they didn't on the Treo 650.
Where can I find real music ringtones for the Sprint PPC-6600
Well, I have had 6600 for 3 days now, and can honestly say that in comparison to the crappy 650 this phone is unreal!!! It actually WORKS without resetting :)
Actually the only thing I haven figured out is how to get my gmail account set up with the software. For some reason it doesnt want to work.

My PPC 6600 dials in when I am searching emails but it does not hang up after all emails are downloaded. Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone know how to fix it. So far the only way I can get it to hang up is to turn off the phone and then turn it on again.
Thanks,
Richard Disney
I just got the PPC6600 for SPCS and I love it. It's a great phone with incredible capabilities (and FREE internet access)! However, there are two sides to every coin. The PCS Vision on the phone is completely different content-wise from normal PCS phones. Practecally no games, no ringers whatsoever, and no screensavers/wallpapers. These can easily be remedied however with free downloads from the internet, but I just want to know why they say it's a Vision phone when over 1/2 of vision is non-existant?
You can easily convert any MP3 to WAV format to turn it into a ringer, and any pic can become a wallpaper (when properly re-sized). The MP3 function is also worth hours of entertainment (provided you have the extended-life battery and an SD card), but can we find out what video formats will play in Windows Media Player on this thing?
I have tried several diffenent types including AVI, MPEG, and Video Clip formats, but nothing works. Maybe I need an SD card to free up memory on the actual phone, or maybe WMP is a bust on the phone. Someone please help me out here. I have a ton of video clips I would like to be able to play on this thing, but WHAT FORMAT!?!?
Thanks,
Robert
Got the phone and had some problems early on, but from reading this board it seems like SPCS is the problem. For me, bluetooth devices have been horiible! I hear fine, but people say I sound like I'm talking throuh a pillow...and I do. I've even tried multiple devices. Went to the SPCS store and paired the headset to a Treo 650, and the guy said I sounded crystal clear. Anybody have any ideas as to why the bluetooth is so bad on the 6600?
I want to move to this from Treo 650 mainly because of streaming video capability of PPC devices, which given the infomation here doesn't seem like very readily supported. Can someone elaborate please?
In addition to that I have a couple of questions:
1. Has anyone tried using this as a modem (USB or BT) with Sprint PCS service, if yes what speeds did you get?
2. Anyone knows if Audiovox or HTC is offering Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrade for this device?
thx
Rajesh
I have used the phone as a modem (USB) but only when in a pinch. I purchased a WiFi SD card and try to use wireless whenever available. Last I heard 5.0 was not being offered for this phone.
Have the 6601..drops calls, and freezes constantly. I am on my 4th 6601 now and it has happened with all of them. Contacted sprint tech support hundreds of times, still no conclusion..in addition, the internet and email system has been great. It seems to be the telephone part is the problem with me. I am trading to a Treo-650 next week.Anyone think thats a bad decision?
everyone ... use the pocket dvd wizard... trust me... shrink divx movies any video files etc.. from over 700mb to 100mb the way to view them on your 6600 is this ...do your file exxplorer drag your my videos folder to the pocket pc icon.. then open that icon and drag it to the storage card... put your videos in there and they work fine.... now i need to know how to get ringtones on it... help me
For ringtones go to handango. If you want really loud alarms there ATalarm is great!
the 6600 sucks sprint sucks they dont do what they promise and when are they going to get rid
of those jamaicans
I just got my 6600 after reading lots of favourable comments and I look forward to using it a lot. However, when I set my 6600 in the sync cradle, my mouse freezes completely.
Any ideas what might be wrong?
I agree with the phone part of the 6600 sucks!!!!! I am on my second one. I now have the third tier Sprint support on one of my speed dials. It will lock up, rest, and loose all my data. One rep tried to sell me an SD chip to help, I want it not to lock up, keep my data like my old Samsung. Great for Internet, but what a POS phone!!! You would think with all the memory and power, it would be at least a decent phone.
