The iPod Photo
As promised, here are some pics and more details about the iPod Photo: Comes in two versions, a 40GB model which sells for $499 and a 60GB version that sells for $599. Both weigh 6.4 ounces, are 2.4 x 4.1 x 0.75 inches in size (slightly thicker and heavier than the regular 40GB iPod), and have a battery life of 15 hours (which is 25% better than the 4G iPod). Also comes with an AV cable for hooking up to a TV for slideshows. It's estimated to ship in 1 to 2 weeks. Click to see a couple more pics.

This should eb awesome
bt?
It's funny that no one else called the early shipment. I was just reading yesterday where people someone had heard from a "reliable source" that it'd be a while before we saw these. It's beautiful. *sniff*
no camera? lame!
It's up on their website. Along with picts of the US iPod.
If i did'nt have my pocket pc i'de want one...
This should eb awesome
is for apple to stop making higher end models take higher price points and bring the cost down on the lower models instead and fill the already existing price points! i just want to be able to afford an ipod dammit!
bt part duex?
no body mentionnend that! well i dont have an ipod color and i cant afford it now but can sure affortd to upgrade to 4.7!! :)
I'd consider this if it did video. I'm sure they'd need some sort of decoding chip, but seriously, how hard could it be?
I think its just going to be a big hard drive for pictures. Since there is no camera on it, and the screen is so small to view. My does just fine.

Unfortunately, for the killer app of using your iPod to offload from your digicam while on vacation, you're still stuck using one of the clunky, battery-draining adapters from Belkin.
And it seems like even with the adapter, you won't be able to see your pictures on the iPod until you import them into iPhoto and then sync them back.
Say what you want about missing video, bluetooth, wifi, whatever. Having an "iPod Photo" that doesn't easily connect to a digital camera is lame.
Still doesn't? Then it's still for just lemmings.
dropping the iphoto part, and keeping the easier to read color gui? the hard to read blue lcd has always been pretty ghetto for such a high price point product. and will 4.7 carry as many hidden restrictions as 4.6 did?

And that's all Apple needs to sell these by the buttload. I won't buying one, though, features are, as usual, lacking, and the price is not competitive, as usual.

what a joke Come on apple you can do better than this...Add something that matters

I agree that apple could have made this a whole lot better with a cam. even a .3 megapixel. it would have cost an extra 10 bucks or so per unit. they are so ridiculously overpriced anyway, who'd care?
It'll be interesting to see if they fixed the headphone static problem.

Unlike the iPod Photo, the Archos Gmini 400 *does* have a CF slot for offloading photos from a digital camera on the go. It's only a 20GB model, but it's also selling for only $335. (according to Pricewatch.com) Oh, and it also plays DivX files and Mophun games and records uncompressed WAV audio, too.
If Archos had any sense -- and sadly, they don't -- they would announce a 40GB Gmini 440 tomorrow.
I could buy a brand new PC and have enough money left over for a TiVO...
I can't believe you can't use this thing to store and view your digital camera files on when away from your Mac. Seems like a no-brainer feature to add.
One thing we have to give Apple props for is the battery life. I was sure that there was no way they could put in a 60,000+ color backlit screen and not take a hit on battery life. But somehow you can still play music for 15 hours, and even with slideshows and music on, you can still get 5 horus straight. That's impressive.
I would prefer this more if it played videos. If there was a way to transfer files off a CompactFlash Card, then I would definately get one. Would be useful as a portable harddrive when i go on trips and stuff.
They just added Album Art, but I want to see the entire Album insert, lyrics, artist facts and news. How hard would that be to add for songs purchased from Itunes. Think of the Value-add. It would be nice to have a FM transmitter was well.
I love my 30 gig Ipod, but I wanted more than they just delivered.
but it will sell - after this has been announced i wouldnt want a "mere" music ipod. That said im not sure i'd want a version that doesnt play .mov or read XD cards
When have you been like, oh man, if I only had my entire photo collection with me?
I am a self proclaimed gadget whore, I had the first iPod, the mini and now... well, I'm sticking with the mini because I see no need for this. Normally I want every product apple makes even if I don't need it because they tend to be useful at one point... but this is just garbage. The only cool thing is the battery life and the album cover showing when you play a song. Other than that its pointless.
-For all you people that want a camera on here, get real, they wouldn't just throw a crappy camera on the ipod, it isn't there style and it isn't necessary.
-I do agree that you should be able to rip photos FROM a camera to an iPod.
- I think its stupid that they have taken a step back and made it even a little bigger.
-No video playback is retarded.
Verdict: Something that isn't useful (aside from a screen that you can read easier and longer battery life) isn't worth making. Maybe there is a certain niche that would like to have all their pictures in there. But i mean how many people actually keep their photos even 1% as organized as their music? Exactly.
i think apple only want to concentrate on the music aspect and be the best in that area.
and not juggling video, music, and photo at once.
if they add CF slot loading/storing, that would drain the battery life significantly. 15 hrs playtime is due to a larger capacity and larger size obviously. 0.75 inch thicker.
i think the only reason they put out a photo ipod is to please the public. and to show that they can.
man i wonder how does the new 4gen owner feel when they just bought their 4gen last week. or even yesterday?! =D
and color is sooo much better too.
What is with all of the mp3 players having pictures, you just tuck them away in your pocket when you are finished selecting your song anyway, this is a completely uneeded expense
My 40gig 4g model gets about 10hrs of battery life off of a full charge now. How much battery life is a backlit color screen going to eat? And condisering the low prices of palm and pocketpc's these days, do we need this feature? I think i would be great to be able to view the album art when picking tunes to play, but would it be practical on the tiny ipod screen?
I'm curious about the s-video output connector on the dock - is this really necessary or even useful for photos? I'm not too knowledgeable about the photo specs on the iPod Photo.
Maybe video at some point?
To be honest, the killer feature would have been the ability to suck jpeg etc down usb from an attached camera. Then I can take photos with either my point and shoot/digital slr and not have to lug my laptop around.
well i literly bought my ipod mini last week, and now they start showing off this hunk of crap.....i really dont know of any one that really would use this. sombody may take a few important pfotos with them while they travel, (ie kids, sig. other, dog) but if theyre traveling with an ipod, 10 to 1 says that they will have a laptop.....
as far as me buying my mini last week, i couldnt be happier with it. its stupid easy to use. the only thing i want is a program to mount the ipod like a USB drive, rather then using itunes.....this ipod photo is junk.
what about a flash mem. reader that connect through the dock port.....that would give you tons of more options, and make transfering foles a lot eaiser.
Apple has announced two new versions of their ipod being released. The first one (unpictured) is a special edition U2 ipod that is basically the same as the old one except is black, has a red (ugly) scroll wheel, and has their signatures eched on the back. The big deal is the new ipodiphoto that is being released....now get this everyone...its the same thing as the old ipod.....but you can view pictures! Isn't that amazing!? If you heard me talking about the last ipod release you can tell how sarcastic I am being. While having an awesome color screen on the ipod would be nice. I just can see anyone paying that much money to look at a small image of a picture on a nice screen. Granted it can do slideshows with music and you can now view albulm art, but other than that its the same ol' ipod but with images. Seems lame to me. I mean if I did not have an ipod I would probebly spend the extra cash to get this new one, but by now everyone in there mother already has an ipod....so who wants to spend $500 (the cheapest ipodiphoto) for just color and images. Now throw in some playable movie formats and then you will have me thinking. As much as I love my ipod, I think just like the release of the 4th generation ipods this is a lame move for Apple. While I am sure it will make them tons of money I think it is a cheap move. I mean you make 90% of the digital music market buy your product, but then keep releasing new models every couple of months. This is not a $20 toy here people. To "upgrade" to the .5 higher version of the ipod you have to dish out serious cash. Maybe if instead of the 4th generation ipod (which was nothing more than a better battery and moving "shuffle" to the first page) they went straight to this version I would be praising Apple, but as it is all I must say is "lame".
How about a simple FM Radio? That would have been nice. And if this thing is to be a photo storage device then not having WiFi is almost criminal as is thier price.
All style and NEVER any function that is why I and so many others hate Apple and the sheep that they cater too.
This thread sounds just like the one after the iPod mini was announced!
4GB! - piece of junk!
Photos - piece of junk!
This is the video iPod. Apple's just being cautious. They're making sure their tv interface is easy to use and beautiful to look at. They're getting people used to the idea of an iPod that hooks up to a tv, and getting the av docks out there in the market. They're perfecting a color display, and all the little 'extras' you'd expect from an Apple portable media player, like album covers.
The important thing to note is that Apple's now got a portable device with RCA and SVIDEO out. Then connect the dots.
Think about what Apple always says: their marketing doesn't show that people want to watch video on a small screen for an extended period of time. Well, that's not saying "we'll never produce a video iPod," just that "if we make a video iPod, we're not going to expect people to actually watch video on its tiny screen."
Now all they're waiting for is hard drive prices to go down. As soon as that happens, I bet they'll slap in another DSP to decode a quicktime variant.
Apple's creating a market segment for a video iPod before they actually put it out there. The color screen and 60gig hd will filter down to the regular iPod eventually, and the AV port will be what differentiates the high-end pricepoint. When there's an 80gig or 100gig hard drive out there, Apple will roll out an iPod Movie.
Apple is building an extremely powerful mobile device by accretion. I do not think the name 'iPod' was chosen at random--Apple never intended it to just be about music. It's about carrying all the information that matters to you in your pocket.
I believe that this will be a killer portable presentation tool for some sales people, that is if you can figure out exporting your slides to jepg and syncing the audio track. I am sure that people will find far more creative uses for this tahn just showing baby pictures to grandma.
My 3g 20gb iPod was insured (thank God). So I got a monetary replacement and ordered the 4g 40gb iPod. Just got it today and now I check engadget and walla, a color iPod. Now I'm torn. I loved my itty bitty 3g with remote and case, now I have a 4g sans remote and case, and I know Apple will release a color iPod solely for music soon. The more I think about it... the important thing is the music. I tip my hat to you Apple for pushing the market in crucial steps and not in wild leaps.
Maybe you can see another point of view:
Apple is trying to reach a larger market, not the upgrade market. If you already have a 4G iPod or iPod mini, great, you don't need this. But if you're not completely sold on just music, and you're one of the 39% of US households that already own a digital camera or one of the 14 million households who are buying a digital camera for the first time this year (stats from Consumer Electronics Association), then this iPod is for you. Because you will have thousands of photos, but you no longer want to print copies. Yes you can email them, but isn't it much nicer when we can share photos together on a large-screen TV, and with music?
Apple has sold only 5.7 million iPods worldwide, so not "everyone and their mother" has one. Even though Apple has dominated among those who have purchased, the market is way bigger there are over 110 million households in the US alone.
What's wrong with new differentiated products? You don't have to buy it if you have something that meets your needs already. But a new product could attract someone who wasn't considering it before. It's exactly what I as a shareholder would want Apple to do.
Maybe the next version will have video for the 18% of households that have a camcorder and who know how to use iMovie but don't want to use iDVD. Or by then, Hollywood will have gotten their act together and movies will actually be available.
The problem with your logic is the price. This is not a price to expand the device into new markets. It's hard to imagine who might have been able to afford an iPod, held off for whatever reason, and then is bumped to purchase by photo storage costing $100 extra. Those who have $500 for a luxury gadget have surely heard of the iPod, and those that haven't bought one are unlikely to be swayed by this. The only real buyers I can imagine are the top-end replacing-their-old-iPod crowd. Apple is disappearing off into rich-man's-land.
Right on.
Also read Joe Wilcox at www.microsoftmonitor.com. He's a Jupiter analyst who is slightly pro-MS (MCE, WMP), but he has good insight about Apple. He also has a ton of customer research data at his disposal (which Apple probably has to).
Here's an excerpt:
"Apple also has done a remarkable job identifying and capitalizing on consumer interest in digital content. With the original iPod, Apple identified the digital media type with highest consumer interest: Music. The iPod Photo catches another digital media type, the digital image, just as its popularity is starting to peak. In the U.S., more than half of households now have a digital camera. The color screen would let users view album art, which is another nicety.
But there are differences. Apple released iPod into a market where there was no real competition for hard disk-based portable music players. In that early market, Apple could risk higher pricing--and so higher margins--on a $499 music player. The market today is more crowded, with Apple perhaps its own biggest competitor. Given the breadth of music player choices and wide range of prices and the greater popularity of music over digital images, I see iPod Photo more likely as a niche product, appropriately positioned to augment and extend the music player line."
So what's the next digital media type: video!
My ipod is only about a month old and i saved up forever for it!!! it is 4g and if i knew this, i wouldnt of bought my ipod... now im pissed so im gonna go fart... pfffft! ahhhhh that gives me a headache.
[quote] man i wonder how does the new 4gen owner feel when they just bought their 4gen last week. or even yesterday?! [quote]
Well, I just got my 40GB iPod last week as a birthday gift, and I feel GREAT! I wanted a good MP3 player and I got it. I would not spend the extra $100 for the photo iPod. I just don't think it is worth it. I don't sit around looking at photos too much, so it isn't much of a feature for me. As for seeing album art on the iPod display, it is cool, but not worth $100!
I think kmart and Joe Wilcox are spot on. IMO Apple has been making some very intelligent decisions from a marketing standpoint. It may be presumptuous of me to say it but I think the 4g iPod as a pure audio player is becoming a mature product. It's hard to imagine any more significant changes to the music iPod short of a color screen, wider codec support, and improved battery life.
I'm sure Apple is aware of this and in the grand tradition of developing products for every type of digital lifestyle, they first released the iPod mini and now the iPod Photo. Each was developed for a different target market with unique price/features points - portfolio diversification, if you will. Different strokes for different folks.
The other great thing about the iPod Photo is it's a safe way for Apple to research color LCD and battery life tech without hurting the regular iPod line. Those who are willing to pay the high price for the iPod Photo subsidize the research for the rest of us. If the color LCD feature proves to be a popular feature, expect it on the next-gen iPod. If not, no harm - no foul, everyone continues buying the music iPod and Apple continues with the scheduled 5g iPod dev. But my money is on a color 5g iPod and an iPod Video added to the family somewhere down the line. Just look at how the click wheel on the mini became a huge 4g iPod selling point.
Ok.. some ppl are whining that Apple should drop the price of its current models... instead of bringing out more expensive models
Dipshits.. Apple can't make the iPods fast enough, you think they want to INCREASE the demand by lowering the price?!
You're on crack.. this thing WILL sell.. see the sexy Aqua Interface...?
mmmmmmmmm
FM transmitter and Receiver,
Megapixel Camera (Still and Video),
Standalone Audio recorder (for recording conferences and such),
Bluetooth (for syncs),
A slightly larger screen,
A price tag not exceeding $500.
Now, that! will sell like hot krispy kreme doughnuts.

I get the $10k BMW 745i alongside with that ;)
As an owner of a 1st gen iPod and a Mac user, I think this is a good thing. The color GUI will have windows users drooling for Auqa and demanding a x86 version of Mac OS X, which at one point they will break down and just buy a Mac.
mine is ordered!
Hi All,
I have held off on buying an iPod - until today.
I have a portfolio of 10+ years of work in computer graphics and this means I can have an iPod that holds my music, my contacts, my calendar, mass quantites of 3D data and animation, and now a way to show my portfolio of work without lugging a laptop around. It's really easy to find a TV with AV inputs. Quicktime would be nice but stills are a killer app for me.
Guess we get to wait for the over-priced IpodVideo now. This really sucks, compared to what is out in the market, Apple should have held off and delivered a more complete product. Who really needs to pay all that extra money just to look at a few photos when you can just have them on your camera phone anyway????
well, I just cant get the point of arguing for CF slots, camera, bells, whistles and such.
sure, you can get the fully loaded Honda CRX with a huge subwoofer, recaro seats and even an mp3 player in it, and even buy a premium class canon 1D as a digital camera instead of three-hundred-grands Diablo.
but, actually, if I could only afford myself a three-hundred-grands car, I'd buy one.
Yo whats the point if theres no camera I mean he colour screen is cool and everything but where do the photos come from? And wouldn't the photos be better off where they came from? I mean the screen is pretty small!!
Where I live this thing costs about 700 dollar.
All the improvements that I've seen on this thing are: colors+photos.
And the color screen sucks. 65k colors is nothing, i have that on my mobile phone.
They should have 262k colors on it.
When you look at other brands such as Archos, you see that they have way more features, and are much cheaper. (like the Archos Gmini 400)
Ok, the new iPod has more space on its hdd, but that's everything.
I think it's a waste of money, because there are a lot of cheaper, better alternatives.
I have to assume that the preferred photo synchronization method for this device would be iPhoto. Does this mean that there is a Windows iPhoto port coming?
Bauke - the screen is 220x176px. If every single pixel was to display a different colour, that's still only 38,720. 65k colour is perfectly adequate. I'm willing to bet you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a 65k screen and a 262k one.
liv2code. iTunes syncs the photo's, but references iPhoto's library (just like how iPhoto references iTunes' library for soundtracking slideshows). You can also direct iTunes to use any folder you specify (Mac & Windows), use the "My Pictures" folder in XP, or Adobe Elements and Adobe Photo Album, both on XP.
I doubt we'll see a port of iPhoto to WIndows.
Methinks we may see a digital camera attachment from Belkin or Griffin in the next quarter. Unless Apple can score a contract with a great lens manufacturer like Zeiss or Leica, I don't think there will be an Apple-branded camera attachment.
Why can't apple try and keep to making MP3 players than a pointless product that you can only see a small photos on a small screen? Why on earth do you need 60Gb for images!? Digital cameras and USB drives can do that!
I'm not sure if this fully works as advertised, since I am in the market to get an iPod now and I am deciding over the usefulness of the iPod Photo to a reguler iPod. My main use for the iPod is to eliminate the need for cd in my car or MP3 cds since now with Alpine's iPod connector you can control the iPod with that and have a hard drive of songs and no more scratched cds! HORRAY!
Okay back to the original reason for writing this. Here is the site http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/ctable.php#Transfer%20to%20iPod
Hope that helps any one.
The reason that iPod Photo is not a good idea is because of the small screen. Its only 2 inches big and that's not very big. Also, If you are looking at photos, they should be on your comp anyways so you would be able to look at it there wouldn't you? I like the color LCD screen but 500 for a iPod Photo is a bit too much. Maybe like 400.
Most folks do not seem to get it. With the iPod Photo photographers like me can, at any given time, at any given place, show every photograph I have ever taken to any potential customer. That is the beauty. And yes, I just bought a 4gen iPod but I can use both: one for music and one for pictures. I ordered mine last night. Forget video on a 2" screen. No, they were right on. Let's just hope it works
@stuff
i do know the difference between those 2 screens, i saw the difference.
btw, it's really cheap to come up with such a screen, if you have to pay that much for it
I have gotten the 3rd generation iPod(X2) one for me and one for my sister. I got a blue iPod mini and now i have gotten the iPod photo. And I must say, very product just keeps me waiting for more. The iPod photo is the best ipod yet. I have not experecied any problems and its beutiful. Those people who talk badly about the iPod are morons who cant afford one so they talk down apple to make themselves feel better.
The iPod Critic
3/4 of you are complaining. Its like Apple is taking your money to buy one for you, give me a break, if you cant afford it, then ok, no one needs to know about it. But now that there is a 60GB, thats even better for people with a lot of music, so its not all for photos. Also it is fun to have pictures on there, because it would be nice to see people you love, and hear the music you enjoy with them. Its more to make you happy. Thats the way I see it, but come on, this is just another thing in all the technological advancements.
Apple iPod photo is the ultimate I think . With it , you have music-
photos and everything else you want to entertain yourself and others.
In your car-at home hooked up to your tv - on the train - plane ,
you name it . Next ipod will take photos . Will get one next year
after the Holidays when the price goes down , way down I hope .
Thanks . joe
one: wow. amazing. ipod photo is the sexxx. that said:
two: do you think that 4g ipod owners can get a refund and put one, two, three, or four hundred dollars with their refund and buy a ipod photo? do you think apple has thought of this and wont allow it? just wondering what you guys think.
three: the ipod photo plays music and shows pictures. it emits sound and has color visual. personally, i think that it wont be long until someone creates a hack that allows you to play video on it. there will be a murderous conversion prosses, no doubt, but it would be nice.
four: the ipod is for music. thats its purpose. the pictures are just an accessory. if apple comes out with a portable video player, its going to be a completly new product, a vPod if you will. this way apple can escape too much embarasment if it fails, which i doubt, by pulling the line all together and having the music ipod to fall back on which has already proven its success.
five: this new battery life is no suprise. new long lasting batteries are costing less and labor over seas is even cheaper. so dont drop your jaw when you hear about a twenty hour ipod.
six: after talking about apple and ipods, i have to give props to iriver. not long ago they came out with a color mp3 player that showed photos. im not sure if apple or iriver started making their players first, but iriver got thiers out before apple. they shouldve waited and souped it up as best as they couldve, because this ipod photo is going to blow them away. it seems like iriver is always going to be a little short of convincing. first their pvp looked like crap against archos's av 400, and even av 300, series. now their new mp3 player is getting shut down by apple. tsk tsk. you have to feel sorry for them....but dont even get me started on creative....whoo. they need to come out with something SOON besides that finger scroll colomn. and thats saying something because i dont use capital letter very often.
those are just a few of my thoughts. id love to hear your comments.
Well, I am quite excited about this new Ipod Photo. It is going to make an excellent presentation tool for my photography. To display photographs along with music on the TV or through my projector.
I could honestly care less about transferring photos from my camera to Ipod. This is kinda stupid actually. It's like putting all your eggs in one basket, anyway. If the Ipod screws up in any way, all your pictures you shot that day are gone. Besides, I'm patient enough to wait to go back to my studio with my dozen or so 1 gig CF cards. Or, if I'm desperate enough, I'll bring a laptop that day to show my clients some pictures that I have taken by downloading the CF cards onto it.
Also, I could really care less about how small the photos are going to be on the tiny ipod screen. It seems to me that viewing the photos on the little screen is to be used more as a reference and finding the photos anyway.
I would, however, love to see a combination Ipod Photo/Video come out. Maybe someday soon! :)
Listen up, if people who buy Apple ipod's were practical they wouldn't even buy an Ipod ;). Archos Gmini, Iaudio M3 are way better qualitywise and pricewise.
So the Ipod Photo will sell, and will sell GOOD because there are enough rich people that want to be part of the "I have an Ipod so I am cool" - club
So who is buying these ipod photos- are people upgrading or are they first time ipod buyers? And do you think the ipod photo could cannibalize other ipod products?
Okay so I made the decision just to pick up the 40 gig iPod Photo, I figured with the holiday season approaching and traveling a lot out of state I can take the family album with me, display it on screen instead of having to kug around picture, plus play music to the slide show and use it for party purposes. So I am seeing a lot of benifits myself, but for some one not really needing the photo feature its an unessity except it give you a must clearner and brighter user screen for navigating making it easier than the other purple on white screen I saw and battery life is wonderful.
Besides that the hook up to the Alpine deck works as smooth as I as you can expect as a cd changer for controls so this thing has been more than worth the money for me. Yes I'm new to iPod but I didn't do it to be 'cool' just to make better use of carrying music from multiple places in one device.
No one has seen the advantage of the iPod Photo as far as plugging in the A/V cord to ANY stereo to play music through. Now i can go to anything with an A/V input and play my whole music library. That is alot more useful than a color screen. Except for being able to make your friends with black and white iPods feel inferior.
um not to burst you bubble, but any ipod and any music player can use a 5$ cable from radioshack to do the same exact thing through the headphone jack (1/8" to RCA left/right)
it is nothing new and just because they include the cable at a 5$ value does not justify the 200$ increase over a movie playing gmini 400
waiting till mine arrives, all other models have been great
so what do people di with thier old ipods?
thats cool
If i did'nt have my pocket pc i'de want one :)
thats cool

Omg, this is the exact same thing sony has been doing. Release ps1, then as it meres its premature death, release psx. Ditto with ps2
-> Ps2 slim. Waste of money, well not mine.

I cannot beleive that anyone would buy the ipod photo-- Have bought two ipods for this family very happy -- excited to hear of iphoto ipod then amazed to go to store to buy two and find out I could not download from a camera??? Extremely poor from Apple!!
I left the store with an Iriver to trial as did 3 others in the store looking at ther ipod photo model. Very tempted to move away from apple for the first time in 18 years.
( I thought the sales assistant was poorly trained when she told me I would need a media reader. But she was quite right in saying the ipod photo was a load of crap--- she told the whole 8 customers looking at the ipods this!!)
Does anyone know if the iPod Photo can play back Quicktime movies??
Check out iriver H340. No A/V out but external microphone input, FM receiver and $70 cheaper MSRP, probably $100 cheaper on the street. Non-US versions support direct downloads from digital camera and video playback, which should be available via firmware update in the US soon.
Ah, I love my iPod Photo..I just wish there was an option to make images automatically stretch to fit on screen. Similar to the images on http://www.ipodphotostore.com perhaps!
Way to go APPLE!
Are you kidding me? My friend just shelled out what, $600 for the 40 gig model? Talk about being completely worthless. Is the extra $300 or so worth a color screen, and the ability to put pictures from your computer on to it? That's a big negative.
Way to blow APPLE!
Has anyone connected the I-pod up to their Canon 1d, to download or save images. Thanks.
mike

iPod Photo is HOT! I'm upgrading from a 3G 15 GB one to a 60GB iPod Photo. woohoo. This friday. Can't wait.
I am not too sure where I saw this but I definately saw it somewhere, Toshiba have developed or are developing an 80GB hard-drive for the iPod photo.
Here:
Toshiba today paved the way for 80GB iPods when it said it will ship an 80GB 1.8in hard drive in Q3 2005 - a year after it introduced the 60GB version that can currently to be found inside the iPod Photo. Toshiba 80GB 1.8in HDD
The Japanese manufacturer didn't mention any customers by name of course, but having supplied Apple with micro hard drives to date, it seems likely the relationship will continue with the new, higher capacity.
The 80GB HDD - model number MK8007GAH - comes in a 7.9 x 5.4 x 0.8cm casing. Toshiba will ship a 40GB version - model number MK4007GAL - that's just 0.5cm thick in the second quarter. It's lighter, too: 51g to the 80GB HDD's 62g. Toshiba's current 40GB and 60GB (model numbers MK4004GAH and MK6006GAH, respectively) 1.8in HDDs are 0.8cm thick, so the new drive should make for thinner mid-range iPods.
Both drives spin at 4200rpm, offer an average seek time of 15ms and operate across an Ultra DMA 100 interface. They can take 500G operating shock and 1500G non-operating shock.
Toshiba claimed the drives mark the first ever use of a perpendicular recording system in which the tiny magnetic domains used to store each bit of information are aligned at right-angles to the plane of the disk, not parallel to it, as is traditionally the case with HDD platters. The upshot, said Toshiba, is a far greater data density - 206Mb per square millimetre - than anyone has been able to achieve so far in a drive of this class.
Here is a pic:
