The iPod Photo
As promised, here are some pics and more details about the iPod Photo: Comes in two versions, a 40GB model which sells for $499 and a 60GB version that sells for $599. Both weigh 6.4 ounces, are 2.4 x 4.1 x 0.75 inches in size (slightly thicker and heavier than the regular 40GB iPod), and have a battery life of 15 hours (which is 25% better than the 4G iPod). Also comes with an AV cable for hooking up to a TV for slideshows. It's estimated to ship in 1 to 2 weeks. Click to see a couple more pics.

Sega Syndrome:
Apple will be apple's downfall. And i'll gladly tell you why.
I refer to it as the Sega Syndrome. I'll explain why in a moment.
Apple, with the ipod, took advantage of a market that was BEGGING to be taken advantage of....any schmuck company could have lucked out and created the ipod. So apple got there first. I'll give them credit for it. they made it slick, they made it big (storage that is). They became king of the portable media market.
And like all royalty, will eventually inbreed itself into a babbering, brain mushed, outdated, historically noted failure. Who will still be mindlessly followed but inumerable hordes. But will be inevitabley be trumped by a superior form of leadership.
Enough with metaphor.
Apple established it's authority, and now exploits it. Releasing increasingly expensive "updates" that in reality only minimally update previous versions? Just because they can and know people will shell out the money. good for them.
Anyone remember Sega? They did the exact same thing in the video game market. they began to dominate...and then began releasing hyper-expensive, non practical updates...just because they could. Years past as they tried to stay "one step" ahead of the market, staying on the cutting edge..barely. All it took was one company to say "what the f***" and release something truly innovative and cost effective.
that's all it will take to topple apple.
Please, some other company, any other company...why does no one put in a 40GB harddrive??? Why no cool alternative to the clickwheel? Stop holding back. Let apple slowly upgrade the ipod in miniscule increments...let people continue to buy it and be happy...but let someone take the initiative and create something that puts apple and its ipod photo worthlessness to shame.
Sega is now out of business. practically.
not that I want that for apple...but let someone give them a run for their money and maybe they'll come up with something truly innovative.
any comments?
and none of this "wahh wahh stop complaining just cause you can't afford one". Has america really gotten to the point where it's acceptable to make fun of someone because they can't spend more than half a grand just to play music (oh right...and look at little pictures with black bars on the top and bottom).
Good point, the_sage_turk. This was released a while back, but I think it is still a good example of how Apple is throwing products out there that are 1. quite expensive compared with the competition, and 2. barely advance previous products. Like with iPod photo here I was expecting an iPod with.. oh my.. an actual camera or something jazzy. But no, it's just a slight upgrade to the previous model. There's no way I'd pay for than perhaps $250 for it - and there are players out there just as good for that price. http://www.googleadvisor.org
I just ordered an iPod Photo 40GB from Amazon (old generation, full accesories). I hope that Amazon will have for sale soon the iPod Camera Connector so that I plug my digital camera too.
Apple will not be making an Ipod that will be able to aquire films on it. I wish they could but Steve jobs said they would not. On the other hand Steve also said that he would not be making a colour ipod. What is next????????
I agree with the Pro-Photo people here. I think it is a good move on Apple's part. They have dropped the prices now, which persuaded me to buy one - and that I will do. I do, however, agree with the Camera To iPod connecter to transfer data. I think the only bad thing with iPod in a general picture is that you're going to have to buy Apple's software. Sure, you can get iTunes for free, but now iPhoto and sooner or later we're assuming that there's going to be one with video which would mean iDVD? Maybe it's just me, but WHY THE HELL CAN'T WE JUST ADD PICTURES AND [video IF it happens] INTO ITUNES WITHOUT BUYING ANOTHER OTHERWISE USELESS PROGRAM!?
I just got an iPod Photo. FYI, you don't need any special software or picture formats, just the iTunes software that comes with the ipod. It will view jegs, and it has an option to keep them at full resolution in case you want to transfer the images unaltered to a different computer.
I got it as a gift. The sound is much better than my Rio. Battery life is great. I'm planning on keeping ebooks in the notes sections. The cam-pod thing doesn't affect me directly because my digital cameral displays the pics and memory sticks are tiny and Ive never maxed my 2 sticks out. Playing and organziing music through itunes is easy. The 2 things I find lacking are that I can't download new games (not counting text games), and that it can't play MP3's and other formats directly.
I'm happy to have mine, I wasn't expecting the gift but it's much better than what I had. On my own I would have shopped around. I can't say the photo feature is that useful to me. Frankly, it weights more than a packet of developed photos. :)
iPod Photo R.I.P.. All iPods are now "photo" capable.. there is no more B&W iPod save the minis... and that will change pre 2006. Guaranteed.
I am a comment spammer: bestarsenalfan@hotmail.com
so when is there gonna be a ipod that TAKES pics and holds them??? i need one thats cheep and i need it before may of 2006.
hi, i just want to say to everyone that is complaining about the ipod photo and are preferring the archos gmini 400, that the archos sucks! i bought it from komplett.co.uk and it stopped working within 4 weeks so i sent it back. the next time i recieved it, it arrived d.o.a (dead on arrival) and komplett assured me that this was not their fault as they shipped them starighht from the archos warehouse! so please, before you go around dissing ipod and complementing the absolutey sh*t archos collection, take a look at how crap it is!! am i right or am i right???
and yes there is a hack that allows the ipod to play video. it is avaliable at http://www.ipodhacks.com/article.php?sid=1390&ipod-accessories
ipod rocks!!
Hey!
I am one of those people who couldnt resist to buy an iPod when it first arrive several years ago.
It has worked fine for four years now, and i have used it almost every day.
Some time ago i bought an Archos Gmini 400. I have to say, if its an mp3-player you want, iPod is the only thing I can recommend. When u get use to it u cant go back to another one. Ive tried some others as well, like creative etc.
Yes, the gmini has alot more features to it, but.... nah. not for me.
Takes forever to find the song u want to here (if u got alot of music that is) and the sync with WMP is more than poor.
I only use it to tranfer photos now.
Ive heard a rumor that Apple will release a new iPod wich will support videos as well. I dont know when, but i would go for that one.
iPod and iTunes... the way to go...
