Thank god Apple is coming out with a $29 pack of iPod socks, because we wouldn't have to resort to using regular socks (or even a cozy!) to keep our iPod nice and toasty this winter (it certainly doesn't get dangerously hot all on its own or anything). Goes sale next month, and we aren't kidding about the $29 part, either.

of protection does this really give. Seems like it would wind up scratching the screen, too.

Well... the price is a joke of course.
But I did resort to using a sock last winter when snowboarding, since subzero temperatures (even subzero celsius) seem to create issues for both the hard drive and the battery!
Made all the difference.

I pack my iPod mini in a sock when I carry it in a bag with other items (burst of inspiration on my way out of town one day). So far I'm scratch & dent free.

Why would you need a pack of these? Wouldn't one be enough?
Saw similar sock cozies for cell phones in Thailand a while back. They were ridiculously popular, partly for the cute factor partly because people actually worried about their cell phones getting cold - which in Bangkok shouldn't be a problem unless you store your phone in the freezer.
Maybe the iPod sock is going to try to cash in the same way?

Ya know... many people have put their iPod in a sock on their own. This idea isn't new or particularly interesting.
So it's hard to believe Apple would actually market this, then gouge the hell out of a customer ($29 for a pack of SOCKS?) for something with the Apple logo.
Pathetic, and anyone buying such a product at these prices needs to get therapy.

realize that iPod has perceived value over "just another mp3 player", I'm not surprised to see Apple coming over with a cute accessory as an iPod sock.
Frankly, there are parts in the world where you can easily find takers for this accessory. There's nothing wrong, it's just preference and culture, demand and supply.

Oh, just found fotos of Jobs unveiling... I did think Photoshop - but no, its true- well this is crazy... who in there right mind - i mean, its a sock, it'll encourage bits of dirt and fluff to target my un-used 99% of the time iPod remote slot... I can't see anyone believing this. I intend to buy 4. :-D
I think the socks are a nice idea. They're different enough that they won't stomp over 3rd party case maker's feet, but also do the job nicely.
I've used a sony made felt pouch (came with my minidisc player) to keep my iPod in, and it works very very well. After more than a year, using the pouch, my iPod is still nearly scratch free. I'd imagine these socks would have similar effectiveness as the pouch (maybe a little more, they look thicker so probably offer some protection from light impacts too).
They're obviously not for everyone, and I'm not sure why you'd want to buy 6 at a time (us$30 for 6 isn't bad. just the fact you can't buy them individually or in pairs for a reduced price), but I'm glad Apple are offering them.

WOW. i can't believe every single person on here thinks its real, and are all getting excited about it. haha. sooo ridiculous. Steve Jobs introduced it during the presentation as a tongue-in-cheek joke. The 29 dollars thing just went along with that - he was joking. There is no practical reason for an ipod sock. You can all keep checking the mac website, but it will never show up. You should all be embarassed.
