It's a hard Mac life
Not quite as hot as that original iMac someone tossed out, but it's amazing what turns up on the sidewalk here in New York.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
...iMacs in NYC's Hell's Kitchen, they work perfectly although no hard drives in them.
someone forgot to put the http:// in that href
How wasteful. They should've recycled the parts. Horrible pollutors!!!
broken link.
Oh, Oh! I want one!
When I was living in Brooklyn I found a 7500/100 outside the bank on the corner of Washington and Eastern Parkway (in front of the Brooklyn museum). At the time I was rockin' a two year old 6500/275 and figured it would be a decent second machine for burning CDs, playing music, etc. The next year I moved to SF and was working on contract at a software company. Somebody dumped a box with a 7500/100 that had a G3 upgrade card and an external 4GB hard drive (w000t!). Swapped the cards and used the machine until 2002. I still have it in my closet, along with my old SCSI cd-r and scanner, just in case.
I'm misting up right now. Sniffle.
They would make great fish tanks! I bought an old mac on ebay last year four about 15 bucks to make my aquarium.. of course, it's still sitting on my desk, but I plan to start that project right after my MAME cabinet... hehe
Hey... so, where are those things, anyway?
Wait. Nevermind. I don't want to carry them up the 6th floor walkup.
Wow, those could be converted to Macquariums! Isn't it funny that even an old Mac like that, when it is tossed out people are surprised & want it. If it were whatever type of PC, no one would look twice. I still have all the Macs that I have owned. Just can't part with them. Especially my custom painted LC550!
yeah, Macs suck.
Do they work, can they be repaired? If so, why doesn't someone send them to me? I'll give them to the local middle schools (in Guelmim, Morocco), where the students, who don't even have $0.58 to spend an hour at the internet caf?are learning about computers, word processing and spreadsheets without a single computer in the entire school!
Anybody out there wanna head up this project?
I still have one of those in my garage. It looks like the one on the far left facing the camera. Its an "original" Mac, in my case the 512k "Fat Mac" version. Thats right, as in 512k of RAM. We even had a *huge* 10MB external hard drive (it was pre-internal hard drives) that hooked up through the printer port (it was pre-SCSI). I boot it up every once in a while to make sure it still works, and it was running fine last time I checked. I'm hoping it might be worth a few bucks on ebay some day... I saw an Apple I (not II) got for like $3,000 a while ago. Or it might have even been $30,000, I forget. Either way, still not bad.
Here's the scoop: I saw these on the corner of First Ave. and First Street a few days ago. I maybe would have grabbed one if I wasn't on my way to meeting somewhere. Either way, they were gone the next time I walked past.
Wow! Apple Extended II keyboards!
Best. Keyboard. Ever!
RE; The fellow uptread a bit who did the curbside upgrade.
I was given a 5400/180 and a LaserWriter 4/600 PS some years ago.
Less than a year later, someone left a 5400/200 on the curb...
Read all about it at:
I'm still using the original 5400/180 chassis, but there have been some changes since then.
What's funny about all this, is that from a block away, seeing the 5400/200 face down on the sidewalk, I thought, "That looks JUST like my Mac!"
I've also found a nice little Mac 13" color RGB monitor on the curb.
Sadly, whomever these are registered to could face penalties from the EPA for illegal disposition. You can't just throw away a computer anymore, particularly if there is a battery on the mobo.
Someone go get these and make aquariums, quick!
The mouse was the best on tjose machines, they had heavy stainless steel rolling pins to go against the rubber ball. I was wondering why I had to periodically clean all my mice except for that one. I popped it open one day and I swear I had everything from dustballs to twigs come out of there, and it still worked well with all that crud.
Permitted in the body of comments, it seems.
So it goes.

What's even more amazing is that these machines may have been in use until recently. They're at least 12 (if performas) maybe 20 (if mac128s) years old. No wonder Apple has such a small market share if their products are so long-lived.
A friend of mine just told me about this link and here I am, SHOCKED! I would totally bring those babes home had I been there! So sad I live in Brazil and people here don't even think of Apples... So sad... So sad...
I had one of those. Da*n, I wish i still had it. I had this cool game that you shoot down helicopters and parachuting guys. I used to play that all the time. Waaaaaahhh! I want it back.
P.S. Anyone here that said Macs suck should go to h***
Down with windows!
did any one rescue those poor little abandonded macs? or did they get sent off to the landfill
