Nokia 7710 is official
This one's been an open secret for months now, but Nokia has finally formally introduced the 7710, their new multimedia-centric smartphone that'll be the very first handset to run on their new Series 90 software (the 7700 was supposed to have been the first one, but they ended up killing it before it ever came out). No keypad, but you do get a nice, big, widescreen LCD, a one megapixel digital camera, FM tuner (with Nokia's new Visual Radio software), Bluetooth, an optional DVB-H mobile digital TV attachment (it's mainly European thing), and, perhaps most importantly of all, no sidetalkin'! Click to see a bunch more photos.

... and no WiFi. And I hafta smudge up my screen to dial when I invariably type a number with my pinky, because I'll lose the plastic nail in a week. And I'd better have a Bluetooth headset or I'll really be smudging that screen.
what's up with that one megapixel camera? last time I remember Samsung is going to release a five megapixel camera phone.
While I applaud the Innovative concepts that Nokia had on paper, the final product is always a let down.
My major concern about this "phone" is:
Size: This thing is huge
Screen: The large PDA style screen is exposed to the element and one hand operation might be a problem.
Battery: Large screen = hi battery consumption
Price: I suspect this will be around $599-699 USD
This is like that idiocy that was the ngage and hopefully will go the same way. Get it right Nokia we don't want to carry around a brick!
It looks like it would be really awkward to balance the device in the left hand while using the thumb to maneuver the cursor. With my more conventionally (portrait) oriented Sony Clie, I can comfortably do a huge number of functions one-handed, with my thumb either spinning the jogwheel or reaching over and tapping screen items. The only purpose of landscape orientation would be to allow two-thumb keyboarding (though this device doesn't have a keyboard!) or for games. Seems like this device isn't positioned right.
It doesn't look like Nokia will be releasing this phone in the Americas, just in Europe + Asia, where it will compete with the also brick-like series of phones from Sony-Ericsson (P800/900/910), which have sold well there.
omg, this sh** looks tight, i want one for ummm... Christmas or whenevers gonna come out. The Screen looks great. But whats up with the shape tho?
"Yet another white elephant from nokia...

Idiot,
I actually Quite like the idea of mobile media and a pda incorporated into a phone; If oyu don't want to carry around a brick - then don't - buy a series 60 phone or one the SonyEricsson Smartphones (Other than the P80 or P90 - since they are also "bricks")
Just becuase you don't like it doesn't mean nokia didn't make a great product that many will enojy
Have you ever seen the Motorola A1000 ? Is it better?
shizzle ma nizzle, this thang is 1337 for wizzle! very inovative and with the series 90, very versatile.

jackass, i have an n-gage and a 7200 and i quite like the n gage more than the 7200. and if you want something thats not a brick get one of nokias smaller phones, maybe some people want to carry around "bricks" cuz they is 1337 aiight.
This phone looks awsome, i currently use a SE P800 which isn't a brick, and a Nokia 9500 (brick), and this would be a welcome change to those, seen as i carry them around everywhere, and this 1 has TV, cool, when is the exact release date and how much will it be?
i have both n-gages and they are the best phones ive ever used in my life and ive experience with lots and i would choose my n-gage over any other phone out there right now, especially the standard vertically orientated handbag phones...i dont carry a brick i carry an n-gage, and the n-gag qd is tiny, come on u know its cool. i do like the 7710, i love it, i love having my all-in-one devices they are so cool and i wont criticise innovation when its this good.
I haven't found the nokia 7710 in Europe yet.I'd like to know what do you think about nokia 7710 in comparison with Treo 650. The lack of keyboard is a weakness but it might have other strengths like sound quality...¿? Cheers
hey guys i've tried phones from all d cell co's but Nokia wins hands down. In d last 8 months i've had d 3650,6600 & now i m using d 7610. Nokia fones r easy to use & always convinient...m on ma way to get my 7710.
Nokia Rules!!!
also, the 7710 is smaller than the n-gage original and it still manages to fit all these great functions, kinda like the n-gage qd, which is smaller again, and a great s60 phone at an amaazing price too.
Yeah I have the N-gage QD, and it is so awesome! So glad I got one. Meanwhile all the people that are against the N-gage are just conservatives who are too scared to make any real desicions, my really really anti N-gage friend looked at my QD and i asked him to tell me what was wrong with it, he said: Ummmmm I dont like the thumb-pad...

Just bought a 7710 in China. What a disappointment! Absolute garbage! The operating system is so slow that it borders on "unusable." Nokia screwed this one up BIG TIME!!
Once you view the screen you get dazzled. I owned before a p900 and this is much better phone. And is not really that heavy.
Hay everyone,
7710 is a really nice phone. I only wish the cam was 1.3 mp instead of 1. and the earphone volume was a bit louder. Other than that it's nice in all aspects. Can't wait to get all the software for it. This is the way with new phones.
This is a great phone/pda/mp3 player/camera/portable office/web browser/etc etc.... So to all the ney sayers, GET A LIFE!

Let me make a comment... its seems tome that one either wants a phone and a pda or wnats a phone camera and music device. I making a decision for a phone the options fall in to 2 areas one do u want a phone only or business tool if so the p900 nokia 9500 9300 and the new 7710 fit that means if you want some thing to handle emails and also see big pages on web plus handle attachemnets and also pdf's and run your business these currently are the best choice. However unfortunatly there are trade offs for me ihave a 9500 for business divert allcalls after hours to another nokia which i carry as its small. the 9500/9300 is thebest phone for business if yu want a key board and large screen. The new 7710 seems to suffer problems however the bigger screen is a major requirement for business users and frankly iam considering buying one. I run my business from a mobile i want the best of the best.
the fact is you get the best of both worlds frankly i rather brick than a toy that is use less in business buy a 9300 or 9500 or 7710 and a parrot car mount and you have true mobile office. if you want a music machine get an ipod
if you dont need big screen get what fits so think before you baff about new technology if the shoe fits wear it
if yu run a home business all three phones above are great... why nokia well i have one car mount ie parrot that works and also they are true business phones and yes i also like the p900 but for now i will stay with nokia.

I switched from an O2 XDA II to the Nokia 7710. Ok its slow, too slow, but its more stable (until now), and best of all it has a better browser. Finally I can upload pictures by HTML post.
don't worry it's not for Americans anyway
It doesn't look like Nokia will be releasing this phone in the Americas, just in Europe + Asia, where it will compete with the also brick-like series of phones from Sony-Ericsson (P800/900/910), which have sold well there.
Yeah that's why it's so slow to get all the latest cell phone technology here. FYI, Asia happens to be the most dynamic market for cell phones and the latest inventions are introduced there first before anywhere else. I find it very amusing that somebody made this type of comments here because frankly this country has the worst selection to choose from not to mention always lagging behind. So stick to your old style phones that you think are so great!
The 7710 is great! I don't mind carrying a brick. The fold up models (9500/9300) doesn't last at the hinges (my sad experience with a 9210). I'd say the FM radio is great. My only difficulty is the configuration with a desktop PC.
nice mock-up.
Let hope there is cover-up protector on display.
Battery sound bad to me. :(
I am using one of these babies right now and I am very pleased with it. The wide landscape oriented screen is great for browsing “web” sites. I wouldn’t want a portrait oriented browser, continuously sliding the scroll bars from left to right, when reading a script or trying to imagine what the web sites looks like on the whole. While I’m away from my office, I can use my Nokia 7710 for sending and receiving text or web based e-mails, chat with my friends on the Msn Messenger and perhaps get my work done with Word or Excel. And best of all, I listen to “crystal clear” music without having to hold the phone up to my ear.
Ankara, Turkiye
all you guys mocking it and everything!
its a great phone!
i got one the other day! i thought myself that it would never fit in my jeans pocket but it sliped in easier than my old nokia 7270!
its a really intellligent smart phone with great features!
and its not like that stupid N-GAGE where u hold it sideways like a taco on the side of your ear!!!
its a really good phone, i would recommend it to anyone!

The options of GPS are also handy with this big screen...
yo people you have to get over the fact that is big because functionality makes this brilliant unit perfect, if you think about it the only phones in the world to have a decent size screen thike this one are also nokia and they where also put down and called briks only because they where bigger and they where the series 90 phones (the communicators) remember? but the screen was the biggest you could see on a phone, i know people that come to me showing off their new SE-P910i but then again the screen size is smaller and they do not have radio and software for them is not very big range, but then again all of these handsets that get called bricks all run on the ne operating system Symbian (tm) and what can i say i only chose to go with nokia's first symbian phone (7650) because my old trusty B&W Psion Revo had it up , and guess what , symbian os is nothing more than a psion os updated infact when psion dissapered symbian appeared.
but in the end you have to count the fact that you might find a nokia 2600 to be a very good size but it only makes calls and sends txts as for the 7710 u have countless features.
but now to go against nokia i would have to say that with all of the time taken for this unit to be released why didn't they add WiFi? as the 9500 had it and was very nice plus the memorycard is still mmc, at least they could have made it SDIO so an external WiFi module could be added on.
and to end it i wanted to make a note to all of those that compared a S60 handset with this one that are very different as for this one will be running on S80 which was the os version to be used in the 7700 that never got released.
I have a 7710, had it for 2 weeks now. Had an i-Mate Pocket-PC before it. The nokia is a lot more phone, less windows than the i-Mate, and that's what I love about it. I'm still finding new features every day, compared to phones with the same functionality the battery is gr8 and it's very sturdy. Browsing is amazing, I use Outlook Web Access to read my work mail, it's that easy and that quick, with EDGE. Sound is gr8, timed profiles, usable word and sheet etc etc etc. Don't shoot it down till you've used it!
I had a 7710 for 6 months and I am pretty happy with it. Great smartphone/PDA/music player. Wonderful screen! Decent battery, good browser (though very slow), excellent email client, lots of software included.
Bad points:
- slow (sometimes incredibly slow) and often hangs when pushed into multitasking;
- photos of average quality;
- no WiFi, and could not use Bluetooth for Internet connection (!!);
- end of series model--Nokia announced they will not continue this series so very limited third party interest in software development;
- cheap plastic back - difficult to open/close, will break easily; the stylus is too loose and can get lost quickly.
I am still happy with it though I'd like to have more third party software available, plus a patch from Nokia to correct some OS issues.
i bought this phone N7710 (Firmware version 4.01 - 05-05-2005) last july 2005. and find it very nice. functionality is great.and things just work out fine. Though i read a lot of negative comments against this unit, i still find no reason to regret...why? because most of their comments arent true.mishandling of this phone is the most common probz,(ofcorz maybe due to old firmware version), it just CONS against nokia, maker of greatest cellphones and gadgets...
if i where you, choose a phone/pda/gadget that fits your lifestyle and yourself. if your an advance user, then go for this, if not, then just find a simple, low cost unit. bcoz all its features were built for tech advance people.
by now im joining the forum.nokia.com for development (j2me and c++ and theme studio). soon ill be sharing w/ you my creation. :-p
Cons:
phone has less software support(apps and themes) unlike my old S60 ver2. unit. apps and themes are sold $10 and more.
for nokia.com -> can you share to us some free ware for this 7710 unit such as themes and games of full version?
the nokia 7710 is one of the greartest mobile handsets ever produced. it has almost all the features. i just bought it the last week. i just wanted the display to be of 262k colours. otherwise its the best phone.
I've been using the 7710 for a few weeks now and it's the best gadget ever!
All you people talking about it being a brick 'n' all. What is it you want then, a multimediaphone with the size of a micron or what!
Ofcourse it's big, for a phone, but how about people that are using a PDA for their e-mails, an Ipod for their music and a cellular as well... that's THREE large items! The 7710 combines it all very well. And by the way: thank GOD it's a symbian (and not Windows Mobile)
Wow who cares? whay are you all fighting and arguing for dont critisize it until you have owned it and tried it out...
A great Phone using it for a few weeks now.Cant comepare the features with other nokia phones cause others dont have most of the features this phone has.. Nokia 7710 rules.NO other phone better than this..
I notice most of the people defending this phone argue that it's the way it is because it's not just a phone, it's a PDA, and a music player, etc.. but does that really excuse how impractical the thing is? I have a P800 - a touchscreen music-playing PDA phone of a similar size from about 3-4 years ago now, and I wouldn't swap it for one of these, simply because the form factor of the P800 is SO much more convenient. With the exception of the radio, it does everything else this does to a workable degree (bearing in mind it's a lot older), but the rest of the time I can flip the keypad back up and it's a phone again, with an unsmudgable screen and one handed operation. And do you want to know something else? Despite having a lower powered processor and only 12mb operating RAM, it's faster than this brick too!
As far as I can see, anyone choosing this over the P910 (my P800's younger brother) is choosing the Nokia name only, and ignoring sense. UIQ is a far better, more efficient, and more futureproof UI than this stunted effort - why Nokia didn't see that when they planned this, I don't know. Wrong form factor, and wrong software too it seems.
Another thing any potential buyers need to know - Series 90 is now officially DISCONTINUED, meaning this device is a complete dead-end. Developers will ignore it, and none of the bugs will ever get fixed.
If you want a touchscreen Symbian phone, get a UIQ device.
I am from Belgium, and I wanted to buy one today, nokia 7710 is no more available here
Damn, I wanted it so bad
for your information. Series 90 is what Nokia 9300 or 9500 use. Series 80 is what 7710 using.
Nokia will not discontinue 9xxx models as it is their business/corporate communicator, which imply Series 90 will stay.
I just got one of these on the Oxford mobile TV trial - 16 channels on a phone, and the quality's not bad at all. Just shows how versatile it can be! I think O2 are rolling out the service next year for the rest of ya.
Kevin, actually you're wrong - the Communicators use Series 80, and that is continuing, as you say. The 7710 uses Series 90, and that has been discontinued (see http://www.symbian.com/developer/sdks_series90.asp).
i would like the nokia 7710, vodafone had the best offer of buying it for £50.....tariff £30 for 250 xnet mins and 500 texts...18 month contract first 3 months 1/2 price line rental....was a good deal, but when i phoned the said the nokia 7710 is being discontinued....anyone got any idea where i can get it on a decent tarrif before its not available?
I dont get why people are so bothered about the 1 MP camera...It may be media centric but if you want a PDA Phone that will replace your camera you better dish out more cash...and about the shape...its similar to the Ngage, but that sold like a hot cake...and furthermore...its symbian is stable and way more advanced than Palm...I'd say this guy has what it takes to beat the Palm Treo (not the windows) but doesnt look like it so we'll see
hi guys i have been using this phone from a week *-* its good but finding softwares for it is very difficult :S ..
