iPodDownload 1.1 - Come and get it, quick
Apple tried to squash it, but our fave tool
for getting music off of our iPods and on to our Macs is has turned up online again—no weird HexEdit hack needed,
either, this is a new version. Just install and you can drag & drop your files right out of iTunes.
If you're on a PC, check out our
How-To on getting your music back and check out the
comments for other ways to reclaim what is rightfully yours.
Download iPodDownload here (Bit Torrent link).
Update: If it's not working for you, try putting the plug-in is in the following
location:
~/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins
NOT:
Macintosh HD/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins
Also make sure to enable disk mode iTunes > Preferences > Ipod > General > "Enable disk
use".
If it's still not working, try the old HexEdit trick.
and last up…Someone has reposted the iPod Download 1.1 plugin (just the 24k plugin, not the 2MB package) to
news:alt.binaries.mac.applications and news:alt.binaries.mac.osx.apps.

This download still only contains iPod Download Version 1.0!!!!!!!!!
Mark @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
I don't even have an ipod and I love this!!
Mike @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
Ditto, 1.0 is the only version included in this download.
Paulie @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
Hey, and how come the screenshot has my Utada Hikaru playlist on it?? Weird. Listening to Final Distance RIGHT NOW.
John @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
F*ck Apple. They are basically a one trick pony, feeding up to the RIAA and their overpriced CD gauging asshol5 selves.
Dale @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
John, you're not paying attention much, are you?
Mil Mascaras @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
Version 1.0?? Be careful, even though the download says version 1.1, when you open up the .dmg, the actual plugin say version 1.0, with a creation date of Sept 20, 2004. Is this a Hoax? And all kinds of other sites are now offering this same plugin version 1.0 packaged as iPodDownload 1.1, even though the within plugin is version 1.0.
Can somebody test and reveal the truth, please..
Russ @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
I downloaded it, but it doesn't work. So Version 1.0 it is....sadly this seems a hoax, come one Engadget respond to our concerns.
Dan @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
There are 2 files on the .dmg, the 1.0 plugin, and a package installer that places a copy of the 1.0 plugin that gets modified with the time installed, but it didn't show up in iTunes. I assume it showed up for engadget since they already did the hexedit trick to their copy of iTunes... I will now do it to mine to test... it works after hexediting.

Update: Some folks are reporting that once installed with iTunes 4.7 they still need to Hex edit it. So, for now download it and use the How-To while we figure out what's up.
paul @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
I downloaded it from the link provided here, and everything is working fine. It should be noted that I have never tried the "Hex Edit" fix, and I had NO previous installations of this plugin.
As far as version number goes, it may be just that the author forgot to update that info when they compiled it, and it actually is 1.1
paul @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
I forgot to mention... I am using iTunes 4.7, on 10.3.5, on dual 2GB G5
paul @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
OK, I forgot to mention on other thing that may be useful. I didn't use the installer package. I manually dragged the plugin into "my" iTunes Plugin's folder. I used the plugins folder associated with my user account, NOT the one associated with the root level of my startup drive. I think the installer may put it into that plugins folder, instead of the users'.
To clerify, I used:
~/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins
NOT:
Macintosh HD/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins
Rick Fletcher @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
The installer didn't work for me either, but following Paul's instructions I dragged the plugin into the iTunes plug-in dir and it's now working fine.
seth @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
The installer put the plug-in in /Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins but this wasn't working. Based on Paul's post, I moved it to ~/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins and it's working perfectly.
dom @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
I don't know if this varies, but I have the line for hexedit you need to access. It's line 004A2840, seen on far right in hexedit. It's a simple edit, and iPod download is a VERY USEFUL plugin.
Kangaroo @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
You dumbasses. this is to fake out Apple so you slow morons can get the ipoddownload software if you haven't done so. Quit complaining, download it if you don't already have it and get the hex editor and install it.
fhs @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
Version 1.1 (with the corrected version string) has been posted to newsgroups:
news:alt.binaries.mac.applications
news:alt.binaries.mac.osx.apps
Weiff @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
And what's the NNTP server ?
fhs @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
The NNTP Server is whatever server is specified by your ISP (assuming they offer USENET access). It may take time for the item to propegagate from the initial news server to your ISP. (It really /should/ have gotten to whatever news server you use overnight.)
Aaron @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
Okay, and what if your ISP doesn't provide NNTP service? if somebody could be so kind as to send it to navysquid (at) gmail.com ?
Morgan @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
Just one more reason for me to keep my Dell DJ. I don't have to worry about artificially imposed limitations on what I can do with my device.
I still wish my DJ was lighter and sleeker, though.

Pyrros @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
Morgan, you must be joking: you can't even use the DJ as a hard drive without Dell's software, let alone copying music from it to the computer.

Or you could just grab it from MacUpdate and pass on all the torrent headaches...

Fresh installed, no hex editing required, working like a charm.
bertie @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
don't upgrade to itunes 4.7.1 - ipod download 1.1 won't work with it - at least I couldn't get it to work, luckily copied my previous itunes 4.7 app beforehand.
Tom @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
Dammit, of course I installed iTunes 4.7.1. How do I downgrade to 4.7?
BH @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
Sorry to seem so ignorant, but I am. What is hexediting and how do I do it. I have ver 4.7.1 of iTunes. It is hopeless that it will work with this?
Tom @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
Hex-editing is (at least in this case) just regular editing of a file with any editor. The How-To link on the top of this page explains how to manipulate iTunes by editing the program file.
But it seems hopeless to do so in Version 4.7.1
Jai @ Dec 19th 2005 2:26AM
