PlayStation Portable billboards -- So close, yet so far away...
Seriously, Sony, how badly do you want to torture us? 3Yen has some pics of a bunch of billboards they've just installed in the Toyko subway with actual working models of the PlayStation Portable behind plexiglass. And yes, they already anticipated that someone might be tempted to do a smash-and-grab, and so despite Japan's notoriously low crime rate they've hired three security guards to keep an eye on things just in case.

Wow, they truly are cruel...
I wonder how much third party software other than gaming will be released for the PSP with it having all those cool new bells and whistles...
David @ Dec 19th 2005 12:06AM
hopefully they have those psp's hooked up to AC power so the 2million Tokyo passerbys don't notice how poor the battery life is haha...
Fredi @ Dec 19th 2005 12:06AM
They just play demo movies from the memorystick, so 8 to 10 hours should be possible.

8 to 10 hours? I don't think so. What other device has a back-lit screen that can stay on for 8-10 hours on a single charge, not to mention having a processor for decoding video.
IF this is true, then the UMD must really eat a lot of power because the rated movie-from-disc time is a LOT LESS than 8-10 hours.
My bet is, if they aren't running from AC power, that it is the "security guard's" job to replace the battery every few hours.
mizna @ Dec 19th 2005 12:06AM
It IS from AC power, I believe.
If you look closer at the guard's foot... the white box... you know what I'm saying.

I'm ecstatic about the forthcoming release of the PSP and am pleased to hear that UMD games are region free. Just a shame that US/Europe markets will have to wait marginally longer ;-(
I wonder whether the PSP's wireless capability will allow connection to wireless enabled desktop PC's for file transfer.
Whilst my SE P800 Smartphone accepts memory stick duo cards upto 128MB, I expect the PSP to be compatible with the 512MB variety.

Uh oh.. I think I hear the sirens of the PSP police approaching! Davids comment was meant to be comedy and some of you are taking it way too seriously and getting too protective. Im gonna take a wild guess and assume that the three guards they hired were Fredi, Kamalot, and Mizna.
william @ Dec 19th 2005 12:06AM
i think i can take all three guards.
David @ Dec 19th 2005 12:06AM
lol thanks 'the truth' - i was just being sarcastic and didn't expect people to take me seriously (besides, no one in my real life does so why should people in my e-life haha)
btw, the security guards AREN'T named Fredi, Kamalot, and Mizna - how can you spread such misinformation on this site? The guard on the left I'm pretty sure is named Guisseppe.
Zer0cool @ Dec 19th 2005 12:06AM
you should be able to grab the one in the blue section and run before the guards notice as long as its around 2:00am
JOE MAMA @ Dec 19th 2005 12:06AM
Um, why even specualte, when have you ever seen a display of some sort of electronics that runs on batteries? Do you guys even use your heads for anything other than gaming? I went by there today (yes I am a US military member stationed in Japan), If You'll look closer, on the right side there is a cord coming out of it for the ac power. Hopefully I'll get my hands on a PSP right b4 I come home for Christmas leave.
AL @ Dec 19th 2005 12:06AM
I think I'll stick with my Game Boy Advance.
Thanks anyway Sony.

Battery life will vary, depending on how the PS is used, Hirai said. Gamers should be able to play for roughly 10 hours before recharging the device's lithium-ion battery. People using the PSP as a music player will be able to listen for approximately eight hours. And when it's used as a portable movie player, the battery will last 2.5 hours.
