First Treo 650 hack: Enable the Bluetooth dial-up networking profile
That was hella fast. The Treo 650 has
been in people's hands for what, like five or six days,
and somebody's already hacked the Bluetooth so you can use it as a wireless modem with your laptop (or if you're super
geeky, another PDA). This is despite Sprint's best attempts to preempt anyone from doing this by announcing they were
going to add the DUN profile to Treo 650 sometime next year, too. Apparently you don't even need to install PDAnet,
anymore either, but just make sure you don't stream too much audio or video or host your website on your Treo or else
you might arouse the interest of Sprint's bandwidth police (they forced us to stop hosting Engadget on a cluster of
Treos several months ago).
[Thanks, David]

Ahh now it all makes sense.... I had a feeling you guys at Engadget had something funny going on. I check your site daily and have the RSS feed plugged into my FireFox's live bookmarking. Every now and then I see engadget go down and am unable to access it. Engadget seems to be the only site I frequently visit that has these reoccuring outages, it begs the question what hardware are you guys hosting this site on??? I would love to know :)

SuperQ: Most engadget stories (including this one) have a "Read" link at the bottom pointing to the original source.
In fact, the link goes to the exact same URL you just posted.

I've been waiting patiently for my pre-ordered Sprint PCS Treo 650, and reading all I can about it in the meantime. But I'm a bit confused about this Bluetooth thing. Is all Bluetooth functionality crippled on Sprint PCS Treos? I'm not interested in using it as a modem, but will I be able to synch wirelessly and use a Bluetooth headset?
olliestrick @ Dec 19th 2005 12:07AM
treomeo - No worries, Bluetooth wasn't disabled, only DUN (dial up networking).

Treo 650 or Razr v3?? Which one should I get? Both are about $500. The Treo has more functionality obviously, but the Razr has a much more significant cool factor.

Now if only the Treo 650 was available from a provider with a decent CDMA network and customer support (i.e. Verizon Wireless) ... sigh

Can you guys create a hack to do the same on a Cingular GSM Treo 650 also? I understand they are doing the same to their Bluetooth, and for me, I am a Mac user, and need the capability to use the Treo as a modem, to realise the full value of it.

Has there been any new info on Sprint allowing the modem function on the Treo 650. I saw on another site back in Oct/Nov that they were going to all it with the unlimited vision version. I would buy the phone / pda if they allowed it. My concern is using the Hack or the PDA program and getting a huge bill for overage for violating my service plan. Any advice is apprecated.

I just downloaded PDAnet for Treo 650- tested, and works great...now your saying you don't even need the software- just plug in the phone via data cable/cradle and then do what exactly to connect?? I am using the trial version of PDA net, so this info would benefit us all greatly- Thank you for any feedback.
