PSP vs. DS
If you've really been dying to know how the PlayStation Portable compares to the Nintendo DS in terms of size,
Lik-sang has a pic of the two side-by-side. There might be only one of them, but the screen on the PSP is, uh, very
big.
[Via Joystiq]

For all your DS Supporters, tell me which system will your support when Nintendo releases their new GBA Micro?
Will you Bash the GBA Micro because it doesn't have 2 screens and one being touch screen?
Will you praise and replace your DS because its tiny and looks cool and can play your all your GBA Games?
You can't say the DS will have Video Playback and Music Playback so is therefore better because the GBA Micro can use the Play-Yan aswell.
Are you going to cry out foul to Nintendo for doing such a thing or praise them and own 2 Nintendo Handhelds and switch between the DS for games and the GBA Micro when going out to play music and videos?
Don't know about you but the PSP will sync up with the PS3 in the future so no need to worry about where the PSP Stands.
Heck even Microsoft who is a heavy rival against Sony in the Game Console market is acknowledging the PSP to connect with their latest XBox360 during E3.
IGN Reports this on here:
http://psp.ign.com/articles/615/615308p1.html
PSP and GBA Micro will out do the DS.
Peoples, you guys are getting WAY too ahead of yourselves. First of all, Nintendo hasn't even announced a U.S. release of the Play-Yan. Secondly, who cares about GBA micro, it's just another way for Nintendo to sell another set of the same gameboys to morons.
lol the gba micro is for aimed for the little kids whos pockets airn't big enough to fit a ds. I won't buy a gba micro cuz its simply a downgrade. say the ps2 slim addition didn't come out untill after the ps3 came out, would u ditch ur ps3 to get a slimer ps2 console? I doutb it. I can't believe people say the ds is too big, I can fit 2 ds's and a gba sp in my right pocket, and yes I have done it, my bro needed me to hold on to his ds and after I had both in one pocket, i could still fit my hand in comfortably. I find the gba micro a waste of time and money, so unless it comes out for under 50$ there is no way Im gonna buy one.
And just to add on to it, u guys say the ds screens are too small, the gba micro's screen is smaller than the gba cartriges! This was a stupid idea from nintendo. The ds will conquer all!!!! METROID PRIME HUNTERS WILL RULE!!!!
"say the ps2 slim addition didn't come out untill after the ps3 came out"
One problem there. It didn't therefore you can't say that. It would lose the company millions of dollars to divert production to a slim down version of the PS2 after the release of PS3. Common sense MasterMind and probably why you don't manage a company.
As for the Play-Yan, it is very unlikely Nintendo will market it to Europe and US release because the demand for it is not as big and Nintendo knows this and why its still exclusive to the Japan Market. However I could be wrong on this as I believe I read an article about pre-orders being made on this however no information on what location was found.
For the Game Boy Micro, this is what Nintendo had to say:
"We're making the gorgeous Game Boy Micro for image-conscious folks who love video games, the ones who want the look of their system to be as cool as the games they play on it," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Because of its diminutive size and industrial-hip look, Game Boy Micro immediately identifies the person playing it as a trendsetter with discriminating style."
This quote can be found here:
http://gameboy.ign.com/articles/615/615160p1.html
Nintendo is aiming for the adults with this release rather then for the kids with that statement being said.
MasterMind, if you want to get your point proven, provide facts from reputable sources. I don't go around saying stuff that is far-fetched. By blabbering what might sound good yet with no hardcore facts just shows your either a little kid, dropped out of high school, or failed your English courses because you didn't provided a Works Cited Page.
Show us facts or shut your trap.
Can a DS fit in a pants pocket?
As we know a lot of reviewers and people claim the DS (aswell as the PSP) is just too big to fit in a pocket. To help MasterMind out with atleast getting some evidence to support his claims, my friend who owns a digital camera and a server volunteered to show us all if it is possible to fit these gaming device in a pants pocket:
http://www.exelements.net/psp/M4V10005.MP4
The Video and Server Space was provided by Red Eagle EX Entertainment.
With the example shown on the video with the PSP INSIDE a Logitech Protective Case, it is infact possible to fit a DS or a PSP (in this case) in a pants pocket with comfortable room to walk and place your hand in.
Conclusion: The DS (and PSP) seems portable enough unlike other reviewers might say.
I can't wait til the Sims2 on DS, GBA, and PSP comes out. So far my favorite is the DS one. The plots for each are as follows:
GBA: You go through episodes, and you can pretty much play forever in them.
DS(3D!): Your car brakes down in Strangetown and you do pretty much what any sane person would do, buy a motel. Really, all you have to do is make your hotel better and make the people in it happy. You also control your sim and you can take him/her all over town.
PSP(Also 3D!): Your car brakes down in Strangetown, and you see Bella Goth, she says, "Ahh, this place has aliens! I'm never coming back here again!" After that, she gives you her house keys and thats pretty much all the story you HAVE to do.
In your next posts, tell me which ones you guys like most...
Not much of a Sims fan so know very little on that. But if I had to pick games that I would want per portable gaming system that has been officially announced to be coming soon...it would probably be like this:
GBA - Sigma Star Saga
DS - Advance Wars Dual Strike
PSP - Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
Those would be my picks for each system.
Just curious, but what's Sigma Star Saga?
Its a Shooter-RPG developed by Namco with a estimated time of arrival of July in the US.
Preview provided by IGN:
http://gameboy.ign.com/articles/609/609264p1.html
From what I am able to see from the pics you get to even fly in a "R-Type" mode aswell.
Hhhmm interesting choices...
These would be mine:
GBA - Pokemon Emerald
DS - Metroid Prime Hunters
PSP - FFVII
Though I don't buy gba games ne more and I'll never buy a psp, they could be different I guess, had I looked into it more. I like FFVIII so I guess VII would be good too, and I used to play pokemon so Im guessin this new one is good too. METROID PRIME HUNTERS!!! This is gonna be a killer ass game if its at all like Metroid Prime 2 Echoes (which is my favorite game of all time!!), Echoes is such an amazingly perfect game!
Lol Type R give it a rest, I wouldn't be suprised if u have posted more than ne one else on this forum by now.
I think the whole concept of maturity is downright ridiculas. So what if its fluffy and shiny you got a problem with it? Thats the problem with some people they are loyal to Sony for some unknown reason. I go for originality and story any day. I have a wide taste of games.
Heres a short list of my favourites;
Resident Evil (all of em and remakes)
Metal Gear (all of em in gamecube remake of 1)
Zelda (all of em)
Mario (all of the mario games)
Halo (both of em)
Ninja Gaiden
Hitman
Deus Ex
Final Fantasy
Hidden and Dangerous 2
Half Life (everything)
Gran Turismo (iffy)
Mario Kart (All of em)
I think best most original games you will find on Nintendo. Action games are better for the PC and well XBox has had some cracking games released(E.G Ninja Gaiden) Sony only a few games have cought my attention for this console, MGS, Silent Hill and Gran Turismo the rest of the good games are multiplatform except the Resident Evil games. My PS2 is gathering a bit of dust because there is no interest there for me at the moment, as for My Gamecube and Xbox they are frequently used for the replayablity of their games.
NINTENDO IS NOT A CHILDS CONSOLE BRAND(QUALITY AND PRICE)
SONY is ok but I have suffered with multiple products they seam to break down easily
XBOX is just there.
Nintendo are not there to make entertainment systems. They want to make games consoles. These new "consoles" are like PC's. When I look at my nintendo I feel good because it does exatly what its supposed to. This is what I dont agree with when people Diss Nintendo products.
Nintendo is not just for kids it may seem like that because it is not an "entertainment centre" its a good old fassioned console.
LOL, allot has happened while I was gone(i had a life to tend to,but you guys wouldn't know about that).i'll admit,i tried to take riksters name, but no i'm not him(which most of you won't believe, but i dont care).
revenger-that post was to you!(it was the mildist way i could say it!)
devilmaycryf@g-no i didn't make an "alter ego"(i'm not gonna lie and say i did),and last time i checked 6 year olds don't type to often!plus i can care less how i type!
my final words- ds sux,psp rules!so screw you, your game system, and your miniture jewels!
-AVENGER
I think Nintendo is pushing for children rather then for adults.
For example Nintendo is releasing (atleast in Japan) the Pokemon Mew DS. Its pink.
IGN Link showcasing The DS Mew Edition:
http://ds.ign.com/articles/620/620263p1.html
So it seems Nintendo's current advertising for the DS is aimed at girls who love Pokemon or the higher demand for DSes are from girls who love Pokemon. In any case I don't see too much advertising for adults with the DS now a days. But then again I don't see much advertising for the PSP either.
psp rules
Wow, good job Avenger/rickster, I think thats one of your most immature posts yet!
Seriously, Type R, limit yourself to one post a day or less.
lol, I still haven't opened NFS underground yet, still alternating between mario and rayman, which rock! Metroid prime hunters first hunt is still my fav ds game to play against my buddies (who also now have ds's, except gary, he already had one).
I wish nintendo would hurry up and get the play-yan here already! I want it now! Does any one know a release date for it?
DS rules!
I'm thinking about buying "Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap" for GBA. Do any of you guys own it or have input on it?
Dude, REEVENGER, Nintendo hasn't even announced a U.S. version of Play-Yan, and they might not.
Play-Yan News:
"Nintendo currently only plans to sell the Play-yan though its official Web site. The company will begin taking preorders in mid-January, and it expects to ship Play-yan a month later. Currently, there are no plans to sell the adapter in North America. More details on Play-yan will be disclosed when Nintendo begins taking preorders for it."
http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/12/15/news_6115158.html
Nintendo Japan Play-Yan Website:
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n08/playan/index.html
There is no planned release date for the Play-Yan outside of Japan. However you can import the device from your favorite Import Store or Site with an estimated price range of $59-$89.
In addition the Play-Yan was officially released for the GBA-SP rather then the DS. Please see Nintendo Japan Website for this information. (Use Altavista Babel Fish Site Translator if you can not read Japanese)
revenger, how many times do I have to tell you,I DONT CARE WHAT YOU THINK!
ds has nothing on psp!you wanna argue that? bring it on.
Crap, thats a piss off...
oh well, whatever, lol, I don't think I'm gonna come back for a while, this forum is gettin too boring...
Cya for now!
what happened revenger?you relized the truth!.........ds sux against psp
omg!i just played the ds for the first time today and man it rocks!i take all the bad stuff about the ds i said!i feel like a moron having dis the ds all this time without ever playing it,i think im gonna sell my psp and buy a ds,cuz its so awsome and it controles like a dream!that metroid prime first hunt game controle beter than anything ive ever played.sorry mastermind, revenger and anyone else i yelled at.the ds is the greatest portable system ever!the psp has nothin on the ds!
Wow! While you just played a DS, I just started playing with a PSP and HOLY MOLY!! Its an awesome system! I have no idea why I even thought the DS would out do the PSP! The graphics, the game, everything about the PSP out shines the DS! I don't know about you all but I am completely changed and apologize to the people who I offended with the PSP. Go buy a PSP now as the PSP will forever be the handheld system EVER!!!
Well thats no surprise REVENGER! After I realized how boring the DS was after several minutes playing the crappy game metriod prime first hunt on these tiny screens, I said to myself. "WTF am I doing playing this crap for?" And what do you know! I am back at playing my beloved PSP that owns the DS! I have seen the error of my way and I am glad that you REVENGER saw the error in your way too for supporing the sad system DS. PSP owns all!!
(No I Am Not #674.) The Way I Figure It, I Already Have Some GBA Games, So IWill Get A DS And Wait For ThePSP Price To Drop. But, I Like The PSP Better, Because Of Video/MP3/ATRAC/Photo Playback, But The DS Will Do Fine.
Well this is a surprise, Capcom has released information for 2 port games for the PSP. One of them actually being my favorite game of a particular series, Breath of Fire III from PSOne.
The other port will be Mega Man 64 from, as you can tell from the end title, from the N64.
IGN Link of Announcement:
http://psp.ign.com/articles/622/622480p1.html
Now if only Square Enix would announce Chrono Trigger on PSP and/or GBA...
How is the screen quality of the DS compared to the PSP?
lol, ok Avenger I deserve that....
just felt like doin that for my own amusment, ok just to let everyone know post 801 and 802 are both invalid, just me and avenger messin around. Just so people don't get confused,in post 801, I Revenger stole Avenger's name, and in post 802, avenger stole my name.
I gotta say avenger, in post 802 and 803 you had really good typing skills, come on man, keep it up, its alot easier to look at properly typed messages.
So Avenger still likes the psp and I still like the ds, and I highly doutb either of us will change out minds.
lol, Avenger actually makes this forum interesting, w/e I guess I won't leave after all. DS RULES!!!
I am the proud qwner of a NDS. I have played both the NDS and the PSP. Both are great machines with there pros and cons. I believe that they are two completely different machines with completely different goals. Comparing a NDS with a PSP is like comparing a Dodge Ram with a Porsche Carrera GT. Both are good cars but they are different. By the way i got my ds for free so thats why I like it so much. hahahahahahahahsahahahahaha you guys payed $150 for a NDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
http://chrisslate.blogspot.com/2005/06/psp-blues-or-guess-whats-in-my-closet.html
I'm confused, REVENGER your strange. I think I'm going to stop coming here, it's getting pointless. take them down AVENGER!
Hey, Lussier (LUSER),
The DS's box says 10+. So only a really dumb person would buy an 8 year old a DS, so an 8 year old couldn't lose the stylus.
OK, I'm just going to lay this all down for you little kiddies. I own both systems, and there is only one question you have to ask yourself before you choose which one to buy. Do you want the system to watch movies and listen to music? or do you want it to play good games?
Yes the PSP has much better graphics than the DS, but heres a little comparison for you all, lets pretend the DS is a car that goes 180km/h and the PSP is a car that goes 250km/h. At first the PSP car seems better but when you factor in that you can't find a road for thousands of miles that has a speed limit over 150km/h, it shows that the speeds of the two cars don't matter. So basicly what I'm saying, the hightend graphics only purpose is so the PSP owners can say "hey look how much better this looks than the ds!".
To sum this all up, I use my PSP for the music feature mostly, I rarely use the game and video feature. I use my DS to play games on, and I like the DS games more than I like the PSP games so far. The dual screen adds some excitement and the touch screen provides 2X the controle the PSP has to offer. So if your like me and just can't decide which to get, get both, if you can't afford it, than get the DS if you want to play good games, and get the PSP if you want to listen to music and movies.
I just wanted to add my input, and I don't plan on returning or even looking at this site again, so don't both replying to this post, just read and learn from it!
In Brief: The PSP impresses the most.
Having both systems is a good comparison. The PSP launch games have some decent, and some bad games, but they're library has only started to grow on the portable front (Sony's 1st attempt), the upcoming games on the PSP are going to totally blow away the PSP lineup though so it's just a matter of time.
The NDS in comparison is seriously trying too hard to stick to the "innovative" side cause it's not even that innovative if alot of games have to try really hard to accomodate both screens. Right now there are hardly any games that are properly using the dual screen "innovatively" and the graphics do affect the gameplay to some extent if you really think about it.
The PSP has to be my portable of choice, just give it some time, the "tamagochi phase" in japan is not something to be proud of for the DS, it doesn't say much for the "dual screen" and the PSP could easilly produce graphically more adorable and detailed dogs (right down to the game physics).
Given some time when the PS3 launches, the PSP will definately shine extremely bright. By then the game library will be alot better and the potential with the PS3 is limitless.
In Brief: The PSP has it's flaws but still kicks ass as a next-gen portable.
the_blade_whelding zhumet- how the hell do you figure ds has 2x the control that psp has to offer?(give me some facts on that!)just because it has a wider range to work with that dosn't mean it has 2x the control capacity.(when playing a game on either system the amount of "control" is actually the same!)yea and that car analogy dosnt really work out, because psp's graphics obviously do make a difference.(if you have both you should know that!)as a system psp is still better, but as for games..thats your choice.(i like psp's games better)
revenger-what the heck are you doing?I havn't made a post since 800,but i do give you props for using my name somewhat good, and for ACTUALLY GETING THE WEBSITE RIGHT.
ds has nothin on psp!
I'm not a Nintendo or Sony fan, I like them both the same. But what I want you to know is:
Nintendo is always Nintendo, I wanna see someone make something like Zelda, Mario, DK, or Metroud.....Exactly, It Can't be done!
So, AVENGER, chomp on that cookie!!!lol
haha! I find that comical. humantorch4pres do you honestly think that companies like microsoft (the creaters of halo!) wouldn't be able to make low quality, poor storyline games like zelda or DK? Or even that companies like sony (the creators of metal gear) would'nt be able to make bad graphics and pointless games like mario!? The only reason the don't is cause of copyrights, and it's not there style.
I just got a psp today and it is unbeleivably awesome. no flaws- no dead pixels, no problems what so ever. i would recomend this to any one. This thing is sexy too, we love it(the ladies!).
I'm not saying I wanna see it there, but it's just that Nintendo will always have its CLASSIC games.
Haha, someone brought up halo, oh my lord, I can't stand that game. The game itself is great, don't get me wrong, a very excelect FPS game, but this whole best game ever is a load of horse crap. Think about this, how much money does Microsoft have? Is it not one of the richest companies in the world? So honestly, how hard can it be to simply purchase the title of the greatest game ever? Well, for microsoft, thats exactly what they did, they bought the title of the greatest game ever. When I first heard about it being the greatest game ever, I rented it, and guess what, I loved it. but only for the first few days, great game? yes, best game? not even close! I know this doesn't have any thing to do with the ds and the psp, but I had to share my opinion on this!
Rogue Agent is comin out for the ds soon and look pretty good, lol cheesy music but w/e. CAN'T WAIT FOR METROID PRIME HUNTERS TO COME OUT!
PS. Jordan K. almost all game systems have a rush when you first get them, give it time, youll notice the flaws soon enough.
I bought a DS in january and i loved it because I could play with a lot of people i know who have one. But i got a PSP a few weeks ago and it is so much better than the DS. I completely regret buying the DS as do many of my friends. I wish i would've known about the PSP sooner, i would be $150 richer!!
Yea comparing my experience with both DS and PSP, the PSP and it's games are much better, just another opinion. People say the games on NDS rock, but I really truly don't think so. The PSP isn't all about power, and just cause it has better graphics doesn't mean they didn't focus on gameplay. Have the NDS fans seen the games coming up for the PSP? Have you played Ridge Racers? Metal Gear AC!D? Lumines? Hots Shots Golf: Open Tee? I've played Nintendogs and it truly is just a 3D tamagochi without much to impress. PSP is a much better portable in my eyes, and in the long run, it'll sell much more than the NDS. Watch this space.

PSP to PS3 compatibility anyone?
Found this the other day...
According to Parks Associates Mobile Entertainment Platforms and Services, a new consumer study of more than 2,000 U.S. Internet users, Close to one-half 49% of U.S. Internet users who plan to purchase a portable gaming device want a PSP. The Game Boy Advance and Game Boy DS only scored a combined 33%, while the Nokia N-Gage managed a paltry 4%.
Sonys aggressive marketing and smart positioning have paid off, with more than 1.3 million units sold in the U.S. in less than two months, with no signs of its sales tapering off, said Yuanzhe Cai, senior analyst at Parks Associates. Our research further shows that the PSPs sleek, sexy design and support for music and video playback bolster its already strong appeal among gamers older than 18.
I am a neutral fan who has happened to do a case study on these two consoles and i think it's incredibly funny reading psp fans and Ds fans hurl insults at each other faults!...i mean come on use guys lets face the fact
numero 1: Psp is i quote "sexy and Slick" yes so appearance wise it is far superior to the ds...the battery life is very poor so doesn't that defeat the object of it actually
being a portable? why would you want to take a portable object if it fails to perform on the go?!!
numero 2: the Ds is quite child-like and well up to the standard expectations but has been proven to offer morte so by saving on the appearnce they give back by being creative and offering a whole new experience.
numero 3: Psp has brilliant graphics and well you could watch films and be engaged in a full length movie! ( if only you could get that much out of the battery life!) and besides it's trying to downsize the highly successful ps2 into a mini portable not offering anything new. Honestly who could really be engaged in a film on that screen... its a wrong move on sony's behalf trying to convearge a games console and a homes entertainment system in 1! besides you'd have to pay ridiculous prices for there compatible disc which cost roughly the same price as that of ordinary games. And well you can't go out and bye ordinary dvd's you'd have to the the compatible one's.
i'd rather spend my money on an average dvd and watch it on my plasma than on a palm sized screen.
there you go the facts have been layed out before ya's.....so i guess im not so neutral, but its hard not to be biased when you have the fact layed out like that! beside the unattrative appearance of the ds you don't have much against it! and earlier i read the scratch proof thing! i have phones and sunglasses which use the same substance..and guess what? it reduces the liklyhood of getting a scratch but it does scratch!
humantorch4pres-ok man, first of all, I did'nt come here to compare games, I came here to compare systems.second, in my opinion all those games suck.third, "i'd like to see someone else make games like"...Tekken, GTA, ZOE, jak and daxter, metal gear ect. so put that in your pip and smoke it!
Queyen- you say psp's "battery life is very poor so dosn't that defeat the purpose of it being a portable?" how much battery life do you need? is 4-8 hours not enough for you!? do you honestly play games 5 hours straight? you also said psp is "trying to down-size the ps2 into a mini portable not offering anything new." um last time i checked ps2 couldn't play mp3s,play UMDs, IM, or browse the web! so i don't know what your smokin.and then you said " you'd have to play ridiculous prices for for the compatible discs which cost roughly the same price as the games" wow! $20 isn't even close to the price of the games! and all you need is a $20 image converter that alows you to convert up loaded movies....but thats to much for you right!? and then after all that you go and say "there you go the facts have been layed out befor ya's" you call those facts!?LOL, i'm sorry but thats straight up funy! you go and study some more, get real facts, and come back latter.(lol,"fact?")
Not really to much to post right now...
I bet foolio man is a psp fan boy, likes his little psp and probably has never picked up a ds. so him having a ds is most likely a lie, I know plenty of people with a ds and none of them regret getting it, even the few who also have a psp.
Free speach, wow u played nintendogs, lol, no one said nintendo doesn't make mistakes. nintendogs is a waste of time the way i see it, if you want to play good ds games try metroid, mario, and rayman. Yea I have played ridge racers on the psp, and its fun for about 10 minutes, then really boring. I also read readers reviews on ign, and everyones says the same thing, fun for bout 10 mins lol. I almost totaly disagree with almost everything free speach said, but he stated it was just his opinion, so i guess he is entitled to it.
The way I see it, most psp games don't and won't have much background story from previous games, many of them use the same ideas and styles if from the same genre, and some just suck. The ds games, though some are also turning out to be crap, and for the most part are made to be fun and enjoyable, and they always seem to have alot of story background, like metroid for example.
So, basicly, for fun we should all sit in an open area and just watch as the psp CRASHES AND BURNS!!! THE DS RULES!
hmm. "sit in an open area, watch as the psp crashes and burns"? well mastermind, you go ahead and do that by yourself. but your gonna be bord, cause i can guarantee you, that day, is far from sight! psp is doing good and as a system it far out does ds! as for games...your choice.
Don't you people think, that maybe by nintendo not making many adult products there saying you should all go out and get lives. more importantly girls, so you dont have to be loosers sitting at home playing a ds or psp. geezeus, get out more people.
dude AVENGER! how old are you really?!
i've never seen anyone so personally effected on a material object! unless your completely obsessed with PsP...and actually if your watching a film you don't get 4 hours! my friends got one and even he has found difficulties trying to defend and justify the reasons for him purchasing it! so you go and munch on that!
Queyen, your "freind"s psp is jacked up because the average psp can whatch a 2.5 hr movie twice befor needing a charge! and what is there to defend, psp is the best handheld gaming system on the market! (you don't believe me? try proveing me wrong!).and is this your diffinition of facts? (please tell me its not!)oh and if it makes you feel better, sure why not, i'm obssesed with psp.
