Pic of that new portable XM satellite radio from Eton
Hot damn, a proper pic has turned up of that new P'7141
portable XM satellite radio that Porsche Design, uh, designed for Eton. We're actually not sure whether it's the
P'7141 or the P'7132, the radio pictured says P'7141, but the listing on Eton's website says P'7132, but predicatably
enough, we are sure that we're suckers for this thing's retro styling.
[Thanks, hives]

It looks like they've split the iPod wheel concept - volumn dial on the left, tuning dial on the right.

Eech! That antenna is going to give me nightmares tonight. Loose screw, floppy antenna, bent bracket, poor tuning -- is an adjustable antenna even necessary for a portable XM radio? If so, this things going to be more frustrating than an old Walkman with headphones wire/antennas.
The antenna is there because it's a combo AM/FM unit. Not necessary for XM and (hopefully) it'll be removable - it sorta looks like the antenna could slide off, but we obviously won't know for sure until CES.
The exterior antenna is necessary for the Shortwave and FM reception. According to the Eton site, their XM radio will also include AM/FM and Shortwave. This rocks in my opinion. Shortwave gets such a bad wrap in the US (not to mention terrible support from our government and the radio industry). 'Course the shortwave addition is not meant to target US buyers.
And , Mark, does everything have to be critiqued from the point of view of a frickin' iPod? Companies have been making audio devices for decades. The circular dial/design did not originate with the iPod. In fact, I'm pretty sure it originated in the 1920's. Sure Apple did a great thing with it, but they were not the first. There's a long history of portable radios worldwide, and some of them had/have designs that rival the iPod.
yes, I believe the "iPod wheel concept" here is actually known as a knob. Don't tell Apple, but I had a radio with this concept back in the 80's.
