Google Suggest: The Movie… (No mobile version yet)
Google just rolled out Google Suggest, which basically helps you find what you're searching for by suggesting words based on popularity. Over on Davenetics.com there was a list of A-Z, so we thought it would fun to go through the alphabet and record it so you can see the words suggested as of December 10th, 2004. We tried to use Google Suggest on our Windows Mobile Smartphone (Orange's SPV C500) but it didn't work (image here). Not that we expected it to, but if it did, that would have been a great app for mobile searching.

Well, very new version of JavaScript is needed for Google Suggest to work, and cellphones and PDAs don't have it. You should try with NetAccess browser for Pocket PC - I know that it has quite new version of JavaScript in it...

Thought you might be interested in the dirty words Google Suggest does and does not suggest:

There seems to be very little logic behind what's in and what's out. For example, 'homosexual' and 'penis' are out, but 'testicle' is in.

You know I'm all for typing dirty words into Google but I'd try booby, teen, or coochie (or for a non gender based question I'd try porn, porno, etc.) before I tried penis or testicle. Just a thought.

I found it funny that goat immediatly linked you to goatse. They will have to fine tune the family friendly side of things before it goes commercial.

Ouch. It's not working for me in Opera 7.54, even though the FAQ says it should. I have JS and cookies enabled, plus everything else in the Quick Pref's dialog too.
Anyone else have this problem? FireFox and IE don't present this problem. Hrmm...

It's interesting that Google Suggest will suggest typo-searches (engadgement ring??).

"lesbians" won't suggest anything. SafeSearch Filtering is off. What gives? Oh, "lesbiens" seems to work. "lesbiens kissing" "lesbiens pictures" "lesbiens we live together" It's great to learn about all the things "lesbiens" might be doing to each other. Thanks, Google.

I found Google Suggest about an hour ago through the Google Blog before I saw this post. The first thing I tried typing in? Engadget.
Had a double take when I saw the same list pop up again in the graphic above...

It's a very cool feature, as fast as Gmail as a web-based program, I'm really wondering how they could make it so fast.

Check this out. works exactly like Google suggest, but it has a dictionary.
http://www.objectgraph.com/dictionary
there is a "how it works?" section also, so you could roll out your own versions. The dictionary is based on the 1913 webster's dictionary. So search for terms like "computer", "technology" etc.. very funny.

Google suggest isn't working for me in Opera 9.26, but the strange thing is that it used to when I was using 9.25. I've deleted all my cookies and javascript is turned on but to no avail. Whether the version upgrade has anything to do with it I don't know. I've also emailed the google team but several weeks on there don't seem to have been any changes.
