Texas brings WiFi to rest stops
We're tempted to make some lame joke having to do with cowboys,
laptops and horses (or some bad pun like "WiFi Noon"), but we have to admit we're a little impressed that the Texas
Department of Transportation is bringing WiFi to 102 highway rest stops across the state. Service is being provided by
Coach Connect, an Austin company (figures) that provides hotspots for RV parks and campgrounds, which we're all about.
Who wants to get away and commune with nature without being able to check email or download some tunes?

I noticed that at least a few of the I-80 Rest stops in Nebraska and Iowa have had this for a few months... Haven't tried it yet, though

There's also one at the I-35 rest stop just south of Osceola, IA. Surprised the heck out of me to see 'Wireless Internet' listed on the amenities sign along with 'Vending' and 'Weather Radio'. :)
I did try it out; by default first Web access redirects to a Iowa DOT page giving road conditions and construction. Surprisingly useful.
I still have to wonder, though, just what they're thinking of putting it there. Who were they aiming to please/pull in? Are they expecting busy executives to route their trip through Iowa so they can use rest stop WiFi? :)

They are also looking into providing the service at all state parks... which is bringing all hell from the 'get away from it all' crowd.

That's why I love Texas!
