Engadget Pete and OQO Jory get down at Showstoppers
Last night at the ShowStoppers conference our man Peter got some face time with
OQO's co-founder Jory Bell to talk a bit about the
OQO Model 01, upcoming OQO Model 02, and to see what's
next for the company that redefined ultraportable computing. Check it out!

Thanks for the news. I admire the OQO, and if they could figure out how to improve its battery life and provide it with the "instant on" of a PDA, I'd probably buy it.
But if this report counts as "a bit" about the upcoming Model 02, then I look forward to the full blown account, which might contain, say, a full sentence.
Awww man, the face behind the name... now there go my Engadget / Wizard of Oz Stylee theories. The OQO looks fun-tabular too.
Great site man, Engadget rocks!
That OQO looks extremely cool, but I'll wait for V2 or even V3.
if they could fit a 1 gig ulv pentium m in there, make the usb version 2.0, improve the boot time (doesn't have to be instant), and bring it down to 2000 I would buy one of these in a second
Aww Cmon Peter you drag some homeless guy in off the street for your 'exclusive interview with the co-founder'
I agree... a 1 GHz ULV Pentium and USB 2.0 would be nice!
FYI the price for the OQO with XP Home is $1899. Also, my OQO takes less than 5 seconds to resume from standby :)
can we make that into a phone pleze? :)
sry...thot it might be faster than getting the GSM Treo 650 :)
come on engadget, enough with the windows media video already!
i think it's pretty evident that many of your readers are mac users, so please do us a favour and stop using WMV. WMP for mac is the worst app on the platform, far worse than QuickTime for windows. Why can't you use mpeg4? then even people with RealOne/Player instead of QT can view it.
Ew ... mac users and RealOne? Just accept the fact that MS will rule the world :P. Why would mac users want to view the video anyways, it's an XP machine ...
well Johnny, it's not just this video that engadget has encoded into wmv. And besides, i am interested in Windows based devices - i like gadgets, that's why i am here. I could well conceive of using the OQO as well as my mac.
Oh, and btw M$ does not rule the world. the rule PeeCees, but in case you haven't noticed mpeg4/AAC are beginning to rule digital media. Far more people have mobile phones than PeeCees, and mobile phone manufacturers have chosen mpeg4 (3gpp). Not to mention the small matter of the iPod.
Wonder why they bothered adding a "keyboard" which is so obviously useless!! They should either have licensed the sliding keyboard of the Psion/Diamond Mako series or used the more generic clamshell approach. Also, the size is needlessly small ie much smaller than the eminently useable Psion5 series so the ridiculous orientation of the thumboard is borne out by it's uselessness!
Would have preferred something that is about the same 16/18 cm x 9 x 2.3 cm as the above handheld with BOTH a PROPER keyboard AND a touchscreen so that both types of user can be accomodated and the device can still be carried in a jacket pocket.
Hey, What about going wireless everything
I´m still waiting for wireless dvdr drives
scanners, more variety of printers, etc..
and of course long life batteries.
I think the Oqo will change the face of computer from now on...
It doesn't compare to any PDA in any way, You can run practically any app made for a PC, that is, thousands or maybe millions of apps.
And by the way..., it's made from geniuses from Apple (good luck with your mac-mini apple!).
In my country, there is no hope to find the Oqo in a near future, but I really want that those guys keep up against the giants and bring more state of the art computers in the future.
It seems that the OQO is so cool. I have seen other mini-PCs like that, but they only sell them in Japan. However I think that it should have a 1GHz Pentium M Processor and a USB 2.0 Port. Additionally, they should have an available notebook enclosure accessory that you can plug the OQO in to take advantage of a larger screen and keyboard, and would include a DVD+-RW/CD-RW drive plus 2 USB 2.0 ports.
I know it's a strange thought, but wouldn't the screen be really open to scratching? Love the OQO website - "the model 01 can fit in a pocket or purse" - so my missus sticks it in her handbag and it comes out covered in lippy and bits of chocolate bar? No ta.
usb 2, better wireless, 512mb minimum RAM, either increase the video ram from a very poor 8mb, or allow sharing of system ram, improve battery to allow full film playback (over 150 mins), reduce costs (noteably £100+ price on spare batteries in UK), switch to pentium M 1.0 ghz, composite video out, s/pdif (ok i'm dreaming on that one!). Anyone tried loading linux on it? I want to know...
I barely use my AMD 64 desktop now i have this baby. i got my foldaway bluetooth keyboard, bluetooth headset, usb webcam, 2.5 vaio 100GB external hdd and my OQO 01. Just make the next one better.

Seems sickly solid. Why would I want a giant laptop when I'm on the road? What I want is... hard drive, accessibility to it, devices that'll go into it, a nice screen, and ... that about covers it. I'm slightly skeptical, but mostly in awe. It's like 2025 but in 2005. PEACE! (And George Bush is an evil rat, let's get him impeached! And Cheney too.)
I like the size but I need much more RAM if I should by one. HD is OK for my needs and processor speed also, but I need 1 gig RAM.
There should also be a built in screenprotection. Why not build the whole thing in titanium? I want to see the next model!
