The iPod and the car, secret lovers no more

Mercedes iPod

We grazed over this yesterday in our live MacWorld coverage of Jobsie's keynote, but Apple's gone and struck up deals with some major car manufacturers (you'll be very surprised to hear many of which make luxury autos) to get iPod interfaces built-in as an option on new cars from Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, and Volvo. (We have to admit we're more than a little surprised that VW isn't jumping in on this one.) Of course, if these guys were really smart they'd have a universal interface and just sell an iPod adapter cable, or—god forbid—have an 1/8th-inch jack input. But we all know how pushy these deals get, and we're not going to kid ourselves into thinking that the iPod isn't a great marketing gimmick for a car company.
