Sony may open up PSP UMD format
So the control freaks at Sony might take a big step and do something smart: allow other
manufacturers to use the PlayStation Portable's
Universal Media Disc (UMD) in their own devices. Other companies would not be able to play PSP games on their
machines—that will be exclusive to the PSP, of course—but obviously Sony thinks they have a shot at making the UMD a
popular format for music and videos on portable devices. They'd be opening up the format to potential piracy (since
they'd inevitably have less control over the discs' use, as well as their manufacture and distribution), but loosening
the reins is really the only way they're going to put the "universal" in "Universal Media Disc," right? If they really
want to impress they'd take the next logical step and sell UMD recorders that would let consumers burn their own
movies, music, and yes, even games to the discs, but we probably shouldn't get ahead of ourselves.

Can you buy and download music from the web browser on the psp to the Memory stick from say... napster?
or if its posibly an upgrade for a later date?
OK! Lets admit it. UMD Sucks. Ill just wait for a DVD adapter for PSP.
I dont know about anyone elese but my original thought was that sony was going to use UMD becasue of the obviose high price for solid memory. Now that solid mem is droping radicly in price maby sony will use that to there advantage say maby put games on the sticks u can already do that by yourself with hombrew ect. i dont see why that would be such a leap for sony at all
Well, i dont think sony would do this, they dont want people to burn games and movies and use it on the psp, thats why they keep makeing updates to the psp's software, they are blocking the ability to play games off the memory card.
Then why do i still have a "Save Game" option under the game section of the psp. My PSP is completly up to date as of yesterday and its still there. Its sony they may find a way to incrypte the sticks i dont know much about incryption so i realy cannot fight that but i still hold my opinion that Sony is thinking about makeing some type of move seeing as that they have not eliminated memory card gaming from the psp as of right now.
im not so happy wth the ps people not makeing a umd disc burner. its not like they are gonna go out of buisness.i mean there are dvd burners & cd burners and that doesnt harm the music or movie studios. i have a psp and i wish to burn umd disc. so what im saying is if u are really into ps i would suggest get out of it and get into xbox. xbox has more things comin for u than ps. it is true because ps only has 1awsome thing for u, though compared to xbox the xbox makers make computers, software, hardware, games, and much more.
so just get it out of your head that ps is better that xbox and get in to xbox
actually Minidisc failed for one reason and one reason only (OK 2) the initial HALF reason was cost but this came down eventually (a wee too late) the primary reason it failed ? REAL TIME ENCODING - this killed it - when I described the differences between MD and MP3 players they would look at me like an alien and say GIVE ME the Minidisc you nut UNTIL I got to the 2 hours to put 2 hours of music on the disc part - against the fact that the mp3 player (even today) pails in comparison to the Minidisc that one HUGE little detail was enough to make them put down the MD and pick up the crappy mp3(at the time) player and walk out the store with there measily 128mb or 64mb)
Net MD fixed this but way to little way to late sadly.
if they had come out with netmd 5 years earlier (MD is a pretty old format over 10 years old) apple would not be who they are today because MD would have crushed flash players before they were ever created.
Sony missed the boat - then they came out with HI-MD and SHOT themselves in the foot by REMOVING from all but the expensive players what SOELY kept MD alive - its vast array of recording abilities (IE mic line and optical inputs)
they killed it all by themselves :-(

I wonder why dvd's didn't come out with that cool case around them like the umd's have .It would have saved me so much money. How many of thoughs junk disc cleaners have you bought?? any way besides all the other stuff that has been metioned, I like that about the umd's.
i got a few questions
what about the programs are in ebay for decoder dvds, music, video etc?
an a downgrade version 2.0 to 1.5 is this safe?
