Cingular Treo 650 hacked: Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking enabled
Remember how a few days ago we got a hot tip that the
Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking profile had been disabled on the
Cingular version of the Treo 650? Yeah, well the phone isn't even officially out yet (just a few more days, yo),
and already Treo hackmaster Shadowmite has figured out way to make your Treo whole again (he already did this for the
Sprint version of the Treo 650, too). Obviously you
install this one at your own risk, ok?
[Thanks, swissfreek]

Now all I need is the TREO!
Since AT&T has two unlimited data plans - one for $25/month and supposedly 'for PDA use only', and one for $80/month 'for laptop users', does anyone know how AT&T monitors to see what kind of data you're using? They have to allow HTTP, POP3, and IMAP.. Plus, PDAs can do more like stream audio, etc., so how the hell can they know which you are using?
I'm no expert, but I think it is more raw usage than specifically monitoring what you are doing. If you start using several hundred megabytes of data per month, that might raise some questions. The terms in most of their service agreements usually contain some broad disclaimer that states that if your usage goes beyond some general level, they have the right to summarily terminate your contract. Rarely happens, but if you are downloading the Matrix over BitTorrent over your cell phone data modem, they might get some ideas.
The $25 dollar plan is actually for phones only, there is a plan between the 25 and 80 plans for pda use, I think its 50.
For your usage on a $25 plan, they look at the ports your traffic is on. If you start using something like vpn or ssh then they charge you $0.001 a KB for the data session, but if you tether to your laptop and only browse the web or send off email then they don't detect it and hence don't charge you for it.
Now that they have merged with AT&T I would think they could start acting more like a regular ISP, and stop the BS. But that would be too much to expect from an american cell phone company.
BTW I have VPN on my palm pilot.
My boss just migrated from ATTWS to Cingular and he cannot connect to our VPN server w/ Mergic, and after being on hold for 40 minutes with them, he finally got a tech that admitted that Cingular is blocking VPN; can anyone confirm or deny this?
I'm still using ATTWS and a Tungsten W and VPN still works, so it definitely seems like a Cingular thing...
Any comments to confirm or deny this would be appreciated.
OK - so where does one obtain this hack to enable BT Dialup on the Cingular Treo 650 - I'm about to go down to my local AT&T store to pick one up that they are holding for me. I'd sure like to know before buying.
I have a Treo 650 on Cingular and use ATT Worldnet as my email provider. However the Treo 650 using Versa Mail will not allow you to send or receive using ATT does anyone know how to fix this problem?
The Treo 600 worked fine.
VersaMail does not support Secure Password Authentication (SPA)which is required to send worldnet mail. Aileron claims to but crashes my Treo 650 everytime I check messages. Eudora does not support SSL which worldnet requires and I'm pulling my hair out. If you find one that works, please post it here and at the Worldner User's Reference Desk www.wurd.com
Good luck
Hey Dennis, Success for wolrdnet users! Snappermail works with worldnet email. You will need the premier or enterprise edition. I just found it and tried it today. Free trial download at www.snappermail.com and a great support page at www.snappermail.com/support/isp.cfm#58

I have a Treo 650 from Cigular that has been unlocked and I use on the Fido network in Canada. I am trying to figure out if there is a way to use a data plan from another company because Fido doesn't have unlimited anymore... anyone know how?

Hi
Tim...I am also attempting to use a 650 on Fido. So far I have had no luck setting up my 650 to access the data plan I am paying for.
Could you tell me what settings you used?
