Electronic whistle tag helps you find lost remote
To be honest, we're not sure where half of this stuff comes from. Maybe there's a Japanese Willy Wonka
churning out gadgets instead of candy. This somewhat puzzling looking device is actually a system that helps you find
your lost remote simply by whistling. Apparently, you attach the yellow piece to your remote then either whistle
yourself or, if you can't, blow into the included whistle and the device lights up and makes a sound so you can find
it.

This probably only help you find the remote.
Judging by the cartoonish YYYYY-Y coming from the device attached to the remote.

The article lends weight to #1's comments, too.

imagining changing from say channel 4 to channel 426. you would pass out by channel 34 most likely. if not earlier.

Maybe the device is used to FIND the remote if it is lost...
Patrick Ripton @ Dec 19th 2005 2:13AM
This is definitely a device to find your remote. The title says "Remote Finding Device" and the text claims that "When you whistle... the remote answers back," adding, "With lights and sound!" and "Will find missing remote!" up on top.

What happens when you lose the wistle?
Frode @ Dec 19th 2005 2:13AM
I am going to Tokyo in a couple of weeks and I wonder what streets or stores are best for picking up weird gadgets like this?
Chris K @ Dec 19th 2005 2:13AM
I wonder if you could watch the Andy Griffith show with this device attached to your remote?
carter @ Dec 19th 2005 2:13AM
So what happens when you lose the tiny whistle?
Steve Portigal @ Dec 19th 2005 2:13AM
We had keychains with similar technology back in the 80s. Can't find your keys? Whistle and the keychain beeps. Interesting relaunch/revisiting of some old, old, crappy tech.

I bought a keychain from Spencer's that did the same thing. When you whistle, it beeps. Problem with it is, it'll answer to more than just whistling. Just about any loud noise would set it off. It took me all of a day with it before I ripped the batteries out to shut the thing up.

Screw the whistle concept (yes, it's very 1985), let's see some tiny RFID tags and a locator device for the home! :)
J @ Dec 19th 2005 2:13AM
How about one that just does something when I yell where the F$&@ is the remote.
arex @ Dec 19th 2005 2:13AM
lol. actually, this is a very old product. Our company carried this product back in the 1980s for lost keys. Same idea, different application. =)
StuBee @ Dec 19th 2005 2:13AM
Damn..either I'm old or Engadget's staff is young. Probably both. Yes...this was a big item in the 80's.

I have a sony rm av3000 the huge brick with the touch screen and the backlight and all sorts of things and you would think that my roommate couldn't lose such a device considering its size but he did so I wish I had this device considering the remote cost me $99
Terry @ Dec 19th 2005 2:13AM
The CLAPPER (for lights) could have made a product like this.

Frode - Just ride the train to Akihabara. Take the "Electric Town" exit. As you come out of the station you are on a little side street. Cross the little side street and about half way down the block you will see an escelator going up. Walk past that and you will see a pass through with lots of little stalls. Those stalls are full of this stuff. Also go down the main street of Akihabara staying on the station side of the main street and you will see tons of this stuff.

What if you lost the whistle?
I think a motion detecting flasher makes more sense, however if your remote is buried in the folds of couches like mine are, then you're hooped.
