Sony Ericsson S710a review
While you were stuck in your crappy institutional high school trying to find a way to sneak out during study hall, some rich kid up the street was spending his days in ivy covered halls taking classes like Depression Era Economics and the Rise of Fascism. Not only was he rich, but he was classically good looking, smart and he managed to be a natural athlete as well. He probably didn't play football but he was captain of his school's soccer or lacrosse team. You rode bikes around the hood together or played baseball up at the local park, but he lived in a different world than you. He came from a long line of rich, sturdy people, and good genetics has blessed him with smarts, looks, athletic ability and ostensibly a bright future. He was the golden boy, he could do anything well and so people expected more from him.
The Sony Ericsson S710a is that golden boy. Its parts and features come from a variety of superior sources, so it has great genetics. It has smarts, looks and physical abilities beyond most other US phones. And everyone's been waiting to get it for quite some time, so they have high expectations.
Since this phone uses the same software as the K700i which we reviewed previously, this Gear Eye will be slightly different. We won't waste your time or ours telling you the same things over again. Instead we'll just concentrate on what makes the S710a unique. In addition, since reviews of this handset are still few and far between, we've included more pictures than usual.
The Sony Ericsson S710a should be available from their website and from Cingular any day (or week, depending on how much longer Cingular continues to delay the launch) now.

The Bod:
Oh Yah!
The S710a is nearly the same as the SO505i, Sony Ericsson's first spinner that made a splash when it came out 18
months ago for DoCoMo. Spinners (and sliders) are all the rage these days, and the S710a does the design right. All the
navigation controls are on the same part of the body as the screen, so you can do just about everything other than
compose a text message without opening the phone up. The screen, by the way, is a huge, bright QVGA affair that make
all the other screens jealous. They will hide in shame and envy. When the keypad is spun out, the phone is still
comfortable to hold and the buttons are still close enough together that you can use the keypad and navigation with one
hand.
A few cool bonus features Sony Ericsson added because of the spinner design: when the phone is spun open, the side
mounted volume keys are reversed so that the one on top is still louder. Also, they have replaced the 2 button press
keylock dance with a simple hold slider. It doesn't quite work the same as on your Discman or iPod because it only
works from the home screen, but still, they get kudos for eliminating the annoying key combo.
On the back side of the unit is a small
cover that open to reveal the 1.3 megapixel CCD lens. CCDs are the same type of sensor used on digital cameras, so it's
worth protecting. A small, but powerful LED flash is positioned close to the lens, as is the speakerphone. When the
phone is closed and held horizontally like a camera, there is a shutter button on the side which will fall right under
the right index finger.
Everyone who picks up the S710a either remarks that it's heavier or lighter than they expected. It is heavier because
the phone is metal, not plastic, which gives it not only heft but a feeling of solid craftsmanship and durability. It
seems lighter because like a good motorcycle, the phone has excellent balance. It sits comfortably in your hand thanks
to a well curved shaped and careful distribution of weight.
The one problem with the S710a form factor is despite the excellent design, the phone is simply a bit too bulky to fit
comfortably in fashionably tight pants. In addition, it passes the Levi's change pocket test on loose fit jeans, but is
pretty uncomfortable in there (or any pocket, for that matter) on a tight pair. There is a minor issue with the D-Pad -
it is not a joystick like on the K700, but a joystick looking select button surround by a D-Pad. It's very easy to use,
but not until you teach yourself that the select button is just that.
Battery Life: Yup
Despite Sony Ericsson's best efforts, expect just two days of battery life from a charge. You could easily get more if
you left the phone alone, but the problem is between the great big screen, decent data speed, amazing CCD camera (CCDs
require more power), good Bluetooth, etc., you're going to use this phone non-stop. And when you do, you're going to
get an average of two days of life out of it.
Our personal best was 3 days, and that was when we were sick in bed. The worst was 20 hours, and that was during the
stress test known as Macworld, when we used a Bluetooth connection from our laptop to the S710a so we could use its
EDGE connection to get out to the internet and cover the keynote live for you. 3 hours of Bluetooth and EDGE is not
battery life friendly. Then afterwards, while we were waiting for our iPod shuffles at the Apple store, we showed the
phone off for a few hours, and then showed it off for another few hours that night at another meeting. Needless to say
the phone up and died around 11 pm that night.
Signal and Sound: Oh Yah!
Remember when we said we wish there was a "hell yah" for the Nokia 7610 messaging category because it surpassed
everything else? Well the s710's performance here makes us wish that again, but we're still not breaking our own rules.
However, if we were writing Gear Eye in Italian, we'd give this phone "il capo di tutti capi." We have yet to use
another phone with reception as good as the S710a. It is the first handset that we can hold a call on in the
radio-proof dungeon we call home.
The sound rivals that of the K700 and other handsets, however it manages to be louder.
Menus and everything else: See K700...
Nearly everything else we evaluated in our K700 review
is the same for the S710a, since they use the same software. Because of the S710's larger screen and its faster data
capabilities thanks to EDGE, it is worth noting that both the email and browsing experience are improved, the rest are
the same. Also, although the S710 includes an MP3 player, if forgoes an FM radio. We didn't miss it at all.
The only other significant difference between the two comes down to the camera. Although its sensor, lens and the
resulting pictures blow away pretty much every other cameraphone available in the States, the S710 still cannot replace
your high end digicam. Still, it's perfect for snapshot from a day, or (thanks to the flash and CCD) even a night out
on the town. Be warned though, a day of picture taking will destroy your battery life, however a snapshot here and
there doesn't seem to have any significant effect.
Also, this phone has the same problems with iSync that the K700 did. However, once you use the same trick to get it
working, it too works like a champ. It also shows up as a K700, not an S700, since there is no iSync support for the
S710 yet.

I have had this phone for a month or two now. At first I was elated, showing everyone my phone and making them jealous. But now I am having some seious problems with voicemail and text messages. I have never had this problem with any other phone. All my previous phones were sprint phones. Great phones, horrible customer service. Anyway-I get my messages days later and I think there actually have been messages that I have never received. This makes me extremely pissed to spend all this money on a very nice phone and I am not recieving my business messages. I was just wondering if anyone else was having the same problem, If so I am getting a new phone!
Just got the s710. In Cingular california, if you are not currently under contract, it's 199 after 100 rebate. In some stores this requires purchase of the "media works" package.
Thankfully, i had the media works package that included 1000 text messages and unlimited downloads (so i can hook this baby up to my bluetoothed carputer). They don't offer this package anymore (they renamed it medianet) and I had to shop around for a store that would interpret the buy a media works plan differently (since I had one already-- the new plans limit you to 5 megs. useless)
It's possible to open one handed. it's like learning how to open a zippo one handed. very sleek. it looks like a flourish and often i choose to open it with two hands so it doesn't look like i'm showing off.
the camera quality is amazing for a camera phone. the best part is the feel of the swivel. it feels like you paid a lot of money for it.
it took me about 3 days to get used to the UI stuff which is really all about routine anyway. instead of flipping open the phones i voice train the most common numbers i dial. no bigggie.
in all, i heartidly recommend this phone. anyone know of software you can download for this? i installed the mobile google maps. it's fun but mostly novelty since it needs to downloads the maps slowly.
Received my s710a today through cingular. Cost $199. less $100. rebate =$99. with 2 year contract. Website says $199. after rebate, but when I called cingular $99. was the cost after rebate.
Box & phone say R8A I think this is the latest firmware...
I see some pretty cool cases on ebay, Krusell Dynamic Multidapt #86171 and the V1 Krusell VERTICALIC Leather Case #94171.
Has anyone tried either of these or know of a brtter case..
Thanks, Kenny T.
To make a long story short, I want to upgrade the firmware on my phone from the original firmware (from when it came out in March) to the new R2A016, through Cingular. They, however, know nothing about this, let alone how to send it to me. Any suggestions (that dont require me paying or waiting 7-10 business days) on how to upgrade this?

i am genuinely curious as to which cards the s710a will accept. all the literature included with the phone lead to believe strongly that duo pro cards would not work: quick start guide: "your phone does not support the Memory Stick Duo PRO"... what's the deal?
Dear seller ,
i am interested in buying your item so reply me if the item is still for sale .
Thanbks
Well I work @ Warner Brothers Studios, and I just placed my "Premiere" account order online. Needless to say, it comes out dirt cheap with this. (^_^) The major benefit is the 18% off the monthly bill and the 50% off the initial cost..
Sorry for rubbing that in as it wasn't my intention. But I am awaiting the phone in the mail. 3-5 business days, and I ordered it on Friday.. so I hope to have it by wednesday.
Other than that, a fellow employee has it and LOVES it, I will respond shortly with my impressions.
Oh and 128mb is MAX for the phone, that much I DO KNOW. Otherwise, enjoy and it's great.. though as with all tech gadgets... soon to be outdated. Ahh.. such is life.

I Have had this phone for a week now, and I am very happy with it. Although, I have scratched the screen, I'ts still a great phone. Easy to use, and easier to love. Great Camera, for both picture's and video. Great MP3 player, especially if you download the Disc 2 Phone software from the Sony Ericsson website. Ton's of feature's. I haven't had any problems with textmessaging. I use AIM on my phone as well, and I type flawlessly.
The only thing that does get to me is the 128 MB limit. I had a Nokia 6230, and I had a 1GB MMC card in there, so that is quite a change. Also, the inability to change the text messaging ringer to a ringtone of your choice.
Other than that, it's a great phone. I dont let the little things get to me. It's stil a great phone. Bashing this phone as a whole, based on a few flaws, is like calling Cindy Crawford ugly because she has a mole.
Hi everyone. Seems this is the place to be for discussing the S710a, of which I'm a new owner. Here's my question for everyone or anyone who can answer it. What does it take to watch video on this phone?
What formate does it have to be in?
Where does it need to go on the phone?
And how does one actually go about watching it once all the above are met?
Thanks in advance.
Why do I see so many people saying you can't turn off the shutter sound? You can. I did. You do it from the camera menu.
i just got an s710, but i previously had a t616, and i preferred the way you could access your contacts by person and not by John Smith /M; John Smith/W, etc. do you know if there is a way to remedy that to involve all numbers of a person are grouped before you have to pick cell, work, home, or whatever?
got this phone from ebay, has lock code on it, is there any way to get this code reset without taking it in to the sony ericsson store, ...............
If you don't have this phone yet and you're interested in purchasing it, I know a way on how you can get it for just $40. I received mines for only $40. If you want to get it for that price, [trust me, its worth it] email me at honey-mae@comcast.net and I'll give you more information about it.
you guys are retarded, i dont know what phone you have but i have this phone and in the settings for the camera theres an option for the shutter sound for "none". I have the s710a, and it is very easty to turn off the shutter in normal profile mode, not silent, you dumbasses
THIS PHONE ROCKS!!!! I just got it yesterday, i can't let go of it. if you have this phone... go to http://sonyericsson.com for free theme, images, ringtones, videos. I LOVE THIS PHONE!!!!!
Just got my S710a, totally rocks! As already mentioned, major gripes are the MemStick limitation (DUO only), the absence of any MP3 volume controls. But I'm hoping SONY (you know, of SONYEricsson...) might have some forsight and beef up the DUO (non-Pro) line, specifically for devices like this.
As for communicating with your phone: Bluetooth (or IrDA), and MOBILedit! Best tool I've found for managing/backing up a phone.
Cingular: $199 - $100 Mail-In rebate.
The loss of the T637 to the line was for good reason: while the earlier poster was correct that the T637 had a great features to cost ratio, that was because it has large cost to performance issues.
The T637 has one of the worst cameras of any current generation camera phone, but worse is that it is very underpowered, with the firmware having up to 4 to 5 second delays in general key response, with 1-3 second delays being very common. This seems to occur when the phonebook is has a fairly large number of entries (75% filled). Cingular and SE have been non-responsive to customers on the issue, and so now they're dropping the units.
Why do I see so many people saying you can't turn off the shutter sound? You can. I did. You do it from the camera menu.
they're using an older firmware.
What is firmware? Where do you get it, and how do you upload it to your phone.
Does anyone also know if you can now use Pro Duo's on the phone or just still regular duo's.
Please e-mail me at thegame_45@yahoo.com
This is the best phone I ever purchased. I was always on the cheaper side on making decisions for a phone. Until this phone, the wait was nice. Yes battery does only last a couple of days, but it will only be a matter of time when someone comes out with an after-market battery that last longer. Opening the phone with one hand is not difficult, although I can palm a basketball, it's closing the phone which made it a task. It's a little more on the costly side for me, but I'm happy I made the purchase. Remember you get what you pay for and from TV's to cell phones - Sony hasn't steered me wrong yet. Great job Sony!!!
OK well after having this one for a while I must say, the ONLY drawback for me is the lack of more than 128mb memory stick capability.. I mean c'mon, it's feature rich and fun to use, yet we get a "limit"??
Other than that, damn nice and stylish. I get alot of "wow man that IS nice...er..." from Razor guys and even the treo peeps who want something smaller. To me it's the perfect preview of where phones are heading as afr as applications, but good enough to satisify me for a 2 year time span... until I upgrade to something that at that time is just as marvelous as this. You wont be disapointed.
Just read some comments... so since I just got this phone I thought Id clear up some incorrect comments.
1. the memory stick duo, bluetooth, or usb data transfer make this phone very easy to data share with your puter. irDA too, but who cares about that.
2. You don't actually have to open the phone to make or recieve calls, only really if you want to type with it. Nor do you have to open it all the way, i.e. u can open it like an L and still have full functionality, provided you can access the keys.
And yes, unless uve got crazy arthritis, it is rather easy to open with one hand. It turns either direction, but must close the opposite way (i.e. it does not 360 swivel).
The screen and the camera are excellent. The camera even has a little LED light/flash thing that makes for a great flashlight in a pinch. The photo options are very comprehensive. It will take pictures at 1280x960, and has the form and function of early digital cameras. The speakerphone is great as well. The phone has 32 megs of mem built in, and with 64 meg stick that makes for a lot of pictures.
There are a couple weak points to the phone. The battery life, if one uses the Bluetooth (which is very quick) and the CCD camera a lot is rather low. However, without using those features the life is pretty good. Also, there is no way to make playlists so the mp3 functionality is unusable. And it is a bit cumbersome to open fully if it is charging (they should have put the rubber cover on the opposite side).
Other than that I think its a great phone, and it looks dope. To each his own, and I own this.
If anyone knows about putting a pdf reader on your cell phone, I would appreciate more information.
