The USB-powered blue-glo Mac mini Skirt
Ok, so at the end of the day it's still just an acrylic pedestal for the Mac mini, but Plasticsmith must know how to get on our good side, because now they've busted out a USB-powered version of their Mac mini Skirt that comes with a blue LED that lights up when plugged in. Yeah, we're totally predictable.

Um....$30 for a nightlight? If it had some extra USB ports, it would be interesting. Hell, if it plugged into both the mac's USB and Firewire ports to give you more of each, it would be great. But it's just a light. If it could bounce up and down at stop lights, I would get it.

This CLEARLY needs to be one of those programmable, multicolored LED panels - not some lame single-color thing. (Heck - at minimum you need it to do that to match your iPod mini, right?).
Imagine it getting darker and darker the more mail you have waiting - or flashing purple when you have incoming mail from your boss - or turning green when your portfolio is up and red when it is down (OK - you gotta like red....)

I agree that it should have a hub built in, but it actually serves a purpose of helping to cool the Mini as well - possibly providing better operation.

The first thing I thought was that it should have a hub. This is probably a get-it-out there product and the hub version will be out in a month or two.

What worries me is this thing looks like it would seal to the table and therefore screw up the vents underneath the mini.

Yeah, it should be like one of those multi-color LCD lights that are (for lack of a better word) totally ambient.
If you want to see one that's nice & cheap, head over to the MoMa design store. They really look great.

Yeah, but blue!? It totally clashes with the green power light!

The USB/Firewire hub would definitely be an amazing idea... I too thought of at least the USB hub initially as this is probably currently one of the worst ways to use half of the the mini's USB ports.
And if it came with software to have it flash for new emails, IM's, news (stocks, etc), or even just to have controllable ambient colors, I would have to go get one... and I'd probably dish out as much $80-100 for it.
another idea: an addition to iTunes vis. function or maybe a standalone that could work with whatever audio was being pumped out? now that would be cool.

Someones been watching The Fast and The Furious -Is this the same as boy racers and chavs who add blue neon strips underneath their cars?

#2 - Eric is so right. This thing needs RGB LEDs so can alert you to new email, weather alerts, an incoming instant message, server down, whatever. Now that would sell. Do all the coding on the BSD level with calls accepted from AppleScript and Python would be perfect.

If it had a speaker as well would be great, since the mini is so tiny it has to go on the top of your desk and regular speaker cables would look kinda ugly, but if this thing had a decent speaker in the front would also serve a good purpose.

And... what about a cofee machine and a fridge for a fresh can?
It could also be useful as a microwave
:o)
