The Dopod 585 Windows Mobile musicphone
Still waiting to see if this one is going to find its way over to the States, but PhoneMag has a gallery of pics of
the Dopod 585, that new Windows Mobile-powered Smartphone that comes with dedicated buttons for music playback (which
means no more fumbling with cellphone menus when you just want to pause or skip tracks or whatever). T-Mobile has
rebadged the 585 as the SDA Music in Europe, but so far
we haven't heard a peep out of T-Mobile USA about this phone.
[Thanks, anonymous tipster]

This phone is a variant of the HTC Typhoon. I believe it was released in the states with Audiovox branding. Although the Audiovox version was the Typhoon variant without the additional music buttons. Same hardware/software though really.

Hi,
this mobile is available in Germany since the last year from T-Mobile called "SDA music".
A working collegue ordered one and is happy with it. Instead of a little bug: Don't assign a complete MP3 track as SMS-tone: It won't stop playing even if you've already read your message.
Very nice to see people on the floor try to make that noise stop :-)

Any clues what storage options this phone has?
The Sony Ericsson Walkman disappointed me with maximum 512mb Memory Stick Duo, is this any better.

Hi,
the SDA music (as it is called here in Germany by T-Mobile) uses mini-SD-cards and I don't know the actual maximum capacity of this cards.
But c'mon: 512MB on a phone? :)
Tom @ Dec 19th 2005 12:11AM
Thanks for the info. Yeah, 512mb would be okay at MMC prices. The T-Mobile UK site doesn't have any mention of it yet...

MiniSD cards are now up to 1Gig, which isn't bad. I have a bunch of music on my typhoon (i-mate SP3 now running Magneto) and it's great. Not sure if the 4 extra music-dedicated buttons are really all that necessary honestly...

by Magneto you don't mean Windows Mobile 2005, right, considering that won't be out for several months at least.

@Tom
W800 supports up to 2GB Duo cards. 512MB is the one included.

davood,
you should know the dopod 585 is similar to phones in other brand names, e.g. O2 Xphone IIm. Did you try looking at their web sites for information ...
good luck.

Just got a dopod 585 for the shanghai telecom special offer price - 200rmb (and 3 years of 300rmb minimum bills)
Easy enough to change into english, just choose english in the settings menu, and turn the phone on and off.
English manuals can be downloaded on the o2 site as the o2 xphone IIm
At first use it seems like a nice phone - the chinese support works in English, unlike the nokia's. Although some chinese display bugs if you don't put the region into chinese. (can keep using english interface though)

I am planning to buy a dopod 585. I like it very much but the guy says it is in Chinese only. Any advice? Can I use it in English?
Marco @ Dec 19th 2005 12:11AM
I have the Dopod 585 here in Taiwan. Before I bought it, many people, even those who I planned to buy it from, said it was only in Chinese. then it occured to me, that after all, it is still a phone, and most phones have the ability to choose languages. I asked a few more people, and they confirmed that it indeed is able to be switched to English (those are the only two options on mine tho, Traditional Chinese & English). It can be switched. I'm using English on it. Unlike a PPC device which would require a whole new English OS.
