T-Mobile pulls HP iPaq h6315 from shelves
Word has it that T-Mobile has stopped selling the
h6315, due to numerous complaints from
T-Mobile customers and employees alike about the device. Several confirmations have been made that the company sent an
internal email March 17 to its sales channels to pull the unit due to numerous software issues. T-Mobile has apparently
been unable to obtain the assistance from HP required to resolve the problems, and pulling the units puts pressure on
HP to respond as T-Mobile is the exclusive North American GSM carrier for the h6315 at present. Considering HP won't be
making any money off the unit until they resolve the issue with T-Mobile, we hope they see this as incentive to fix the
problems people have seen with the device.
[Thanks, Matthew]

It's about time. I know many people who bought the iPAQ 6315 but every one of them returned the unit within 30 days.
My frustration is why hasn't T-Mobile introduced any newer Pocket PC Phones that are available on virtually every other network? What about the MDA III (Cingular SX66, Sprint PPC 6001, Verizon...)?
Crappy slow CPU, shitty screen, lousily implemented keboard. It was suposed to be replaced, and there was a memo last Sept. The main complaint was the KB. When I first tried it, I think I laughed, and thought, what was HP thinking? I mean, I know their PC's suck... but this is just stupid.
Thank god I seen this! I almost bought one off ebay :( ...and I seen other pages that loves the h6315!
Is there an owner with out problems out there?
I've had an h6315 since the device came out. It has *many* annoying bugs. I wouldn't say any of them were showstoppers, but they could be for some people.
Example h6315 bugs:
Most bluetooth headsets don't show up as hands-free device when you scan for them (they will still work, but you have to use a workaround and advanced features will not work)
The device crashes *regularly* if you install many (the most popular) programs. Basically, anything that updates the Today screen on a regular basis will crash the device (which makes the Today screen a lot less useful).
When you put the phone in standby mode (necessary if you want the battery to last longer than eight hours), all bluetooth functions are disabled. This means that whenever you get a phone call, you have to answer it on the headset first, then you can transfer the call to your bluetooth device. Supremely stupid design. There's a few workarounds (turn off the display with some extra software), but they shouldn't be needed. Also, this same bug prevents things like built-in car bluetooth functions from working as they should.
This one isn't HP's fault, but T-mobile's included AOL Instant Messenger client sends and receives all IMs with text messages (dumb). Get the unlimited text plan or use a different client (preferred).
Various email bugs. Example: You cannot attach anything to an email from an SD card (gives you an error).
Many other bugs as well. Mostly minor. The problem here is not that the device has bugs, its that we're not getting fixes in a timely fashion.
Note: There's an unofficial ROM update floating around that's based off of some newer code from HP meant for the non-T-mobile version of the device. Installing this ROM fixes many of the problems people are experiencing. If the update is available, and it works, why hasn't T-mobile provided it to their customers? Update info can be found here: http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=eb79afacca4f09ae7fb7c959c483c046&forumid=152
I have a coworker with this phone. She was able to sync with our Exchange server for about a week, and then it just stopped working. It drove our IT Department crazy for weeks, and they eventually sent it back because of a defective cradle. I think she went with a Treo instead.
What about the firmware update that was allegedly just released?
I also have had one since they first came out. I ordered mine the morning they were released. I loved it, for about the first 4 weeks or so. I think my brother put it best "oh my god, it's the windows ME of phones." hopefully this will cause HP to respond and help us all out. Of is the new one finished and ready to come out soon?
My 6315 works fine, it doesn't require extra software to keep the screen off (which I don't do anyways ). The BT hooks up with my Jabra 250 90% of the time - not perfect, but livable for me since a quick disconnect and redial usually fixes it. Maybe I'm not as much of a power user as everybody else out there *shrug*

when i saw the title "T-Mobile pulls HP iPaq h6315 from shelves" i immediately thought "OH MY GOD!!!! the hw6500 and hw6700 series got surprise released early! radical!!" ... but alas. no. instead it's an article explaining why maybe i should wait a few months after the hw6500/6700 are even released anyhow just in case they have issues too.
hey. TAIWANBROWN. your name has your link in it. a lot of people use this linkable-name functionality here at weblogs inc. sites. for some reason people (like yourself) aren't happy with *just* one link to your site. but instead NEED another to feel important. unless it is directly relevant to the article... can you please leave completely 100% unrelated links to personal sites in your linked name like the rest of the people here? it's nice you want attention... but when i see unrelated links in the body it's cluttery and feigns relevance. thanks.
Owners of the 6315 are having as much sucess with this POS as I had with my 5450.
I don't know if it is HP, or Windows Mobile, but the iPaqs with advanced features like Bluetooth and WiFi SUCK.
i don't know, the 4700 is great, has many advanced features, and is one of the most amazing pocket pc's in existence (also most expensive)
Do you actually own a 4700? I'm skeptical that WiFi and bluetooth actually work on the thing.
I love my h6315. Never had any problems with it. I guess I just lucked out.
I guess HP are finding out the difference between the PC market and the mobile phone market. People just do not accept their mobiles crashing all the time and exhbiting odd behaviour -- like they do with their PCs. That's why it takes a long time for proper mobile devices to come to market. Which is probably why Sony Ericsson and Nokia are so good at keeping forthcoming products quiet. Something Benq, Samsung, and a few others could learn from...
I have a 6315 and while it is somewhat reliable (for me) the support from T-mobile has been v poor. I hope an official ROM upgrade is forthcoming but something tells me that HP and Tmo are just going to leave this one behind. Us suckers who paid 400 or 500 bucks only a few months ago can sleep easy knowing some of our money went to pay off Carly.
I'm shocked HP have done badly with this. Their iPaq's are great (the 5550 in particular is just awesome), especially when it comes to developing, they always seem to have the best OEM settings by defaultand everything just seems to work nicley.
In contrast, the XDA-2s (MDA-3 i think, the one with the slide-out keyboard), whilst a great device, seems to have some problems with locking up. Maybe some of these problems are more windows mobile 2003SE than HP.
Well, this makes me feel a bit better about holding off on purchasing a 6315 until either an upgrade or the 6500/6700 come out.. (Whichever may come first..) I hope that the 65/67's don't have any of these problems.
This unit is a lot like the Motorola MPX -- great features that set high expectations but ultimately deliver mostly disappointment and frustration. I went through four (4!) 6315s last summer before deciding that I would not settle for medoicrity with such an expensive device. Problems included yellow-tinted screen with washed-out appearance, static/hissing in earpiece, echo, poor acoustics, and frequent lockups. Quality control was also a major issue with the units at there were at least 3 variations of the unit in circulation at the time. I returned my last unit and waited 2 months for the iMate PDA2K to become available. While the PDA2K is not perfect, it is lightyears ahead of the 6315 in stability, utility and performance. T-Mobile has been slow in responding to these issues, but I'm glad to see that they are not stupid.
I've gone thru two 6315s so far and both suck. Constant rebooting. The worse is how it will hang when trying to answer the phone or trying to dial (it like having Windows 2.1 on a phone, its totally unreliable for even basic phone functions).
So what do all of us suckers who bought the unit have as options? Anyone for a class action suite or other group action to get satisfactoin from T-Mobile/HP?
Now if they could only pull the SideKick 2 next!
I bought the unit right after release. Generally OK at first. THe reboots came more frequent as time went on. Definately slow processor! New really annoying problem - WiFi will not turn off!! Soft boot, hard boot, restore, battery out no avail!! Sometimes will turn on by itself! Other times it will turn off, only if there is a wifi signal in the area. Basically as a 'long term' user the desciption is a POS!
I have the first Pocket PC from T-Mo. It is a great device, but it has problems. Problems that I assumed would be resolved in the HP device, but that I see, haven't been resolved. My phone shuts off, and turns on at will. For instance, it turns off when it is in my pocket during the day, when someone could be trying to call. And it turns on, at 11pm when I am trying to sleep... :)
My device doesn't have bluetooth, wifi, or a keyboard; all features that I was looking forward to. Thanks for your reviews, I was planning on buying one. In fact, it was my friend that works at T-Mo that told me the device had been discontinued...
I am very grateful for this posting. Tomorrow is the last day of the 14-day return policy I have with T-Mobile for my recently purchased I-Paq. Everytime someone calls me, they hear their echo!!!!!!!!! For $500 it is not worth the frustration. This is too much money to give to T-mobile for an incompotent device. Once again, thanks for the opportunity to post this; I am returning this device ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!

I've had three H6340's this far and I must say that while Firmware upgrade DOES fix a lot of problems, there's still good number of oddities :
- infrequent, yet often occuring (at least once a day) lock-up, without additional software installed the device will simply die in action
- bluetooth headset & speaker-phone voice quality is unacceptable low
- emergency call handling is just amateur, for example, in Finland calling to general
numbers service will connect you to the emergency center :O
- volume & network status icons do not update correctly when mode is changed through HP profiles... Just imagine captain of a plane saying "ups, It's my mobile I forgot to turn of..."
If those anomalies were to be corrected I sincerely believe that this device would be used as corporate PIM devices a lot !

i am a lawyer who has had problems with the hp ipaq 6315. the unit sucks. i am thinking about filing a class action. if you are interested e-mail me your story along with your contact info.
I am the proud owner of 2 HP iPAQ 6315's (both my wife and I own one) and I must say that although it has been interesting reading all the comments (mostly negative) it seems to me a bit dramatic. I've owned my 6315's since they first came out and have had some bumps w/ some sofware, but have yet to come across an issue that has kept me from loving the convenience and usability of my iPAQ (although I'm not BT user). Even my wife can use hers, which is more than I can say for some of you whiner geeks. I use mine w/out any problems to connect to my wirless routers at home and work and receive both POP3 and Exchange e-mail, not to mention 15-20 SMS text messages a day, 10-12 inbound/outbound calls/day and constant use of one of my favorite programs 'AvantGo' to keep me updated on every topic imagineable. Heck I'm sitting in the comfort of my bed at this very moment getting caught up on today's events and writing in this post from my iPAQ. All in all I would and have recommended the 6315 to man people and they too have loved it's functionality. For those of you having gone through more than one and still having 'major' problems, perhaps it user error?
hey guys i bought a hp i paq 6315 from chicaga .. but now i ve brought it to india.. this thing is locked up and not working here .. it needs the t-mobile network lock code ... anybody please help me....all other functions are working good execpt the telephone
... please help
Listen #27. You scum sucking layers always walk away with millions whenever there is a class action. Go pettle you services somewhere else.
Disclaimer. Not al layers are bad but #27 is definately a bottom feeder.
The problem is not T-Mobile its HP. All of you customers out there wanted a all in one device that had everything in it. You got what you wanted. Everything comes with a price. T-Mobile was only trying to please all of you. It you want a class action case then pull it against HP not T-Mobile. They pay almost $800 for the device and then bring the cost down for the customer by having them on a plan. Either deal with it or grow up and carry 2 devices, a PDA that works but won't be perfect (NONE ARE ALL HAVE PROBLEMS, WELCOME TO MICROSOFT AND PALM) and a phone you enjoy using.
You are nuts. We got what we wanted? Hey, it cost nearly $600.00 and for that price it had better have everything and everything had better work. You like throwing money away? T-Mobile denied for 7 months that there were problems with this POS. Finally, after sucking monthly charges and hours of time trying only to get a resolution, the want to replace the item. The trick, after all this hassle, who wants T-Mobile anything. Moved to Verizon and couldn't be happier. Call their cust. service and that actually WANT to help you, not make everything your fault. This was T-Mobiles fault as the 6315 is SOLD BY T-MOBILE. Weel, they have lost the potential of years worth of revenue (at over $200.00/mo). Good bye t-mobilenot, hello Verizon. Better phones, better service better everything.
#23 has it right. My 6315 has been just what I expected. The software update fixed what few "bugs" I was having, and the convenience of connecting to both my home and work wi-fi networks has been great. For all of those complaining, there's a bunch of us that are perfectly happy!!!
Well, you all make good points. (save for a couple, and you know who you are : )
I have just deployed my ninth 6315. I'm hard on phones. Hell I used to have a panasonic duramax. Broke it. 9 of them now. All at no extra cost to me. Broke, shouldn't have, but it did. And they replaced them. Quickly. A little too quickly, come to think about it.
I got my 6315 in a pre-release promo thru the internet only offer with t-mob and I had the pocket PC phone edition for a year before that. This 6315 hasn't seen rough duty. I'm in
sales. I have it encased in a metallic rhino protective case/sleeve/belt attachment. If you don't have one, and you intend to keep your IPAQ then go get one now. They're terribly fragile.
As far as the device is concerned, it's slicker than hell. People I meet will want to show me pictures of their kids, and generally pull them out of their wallet or some such. I whip out my PHONE and show them a .WMV of my 2 kids in full color and with sound. Damn good sound if you have an amplifier of some kind on the head phone signal...and some real speakers.
Imagine what I can do with it for sales purposes? That's what impressed me originally. To be able to show a client a video.... without setting up a big ol' player of some sort. Or to be sitting at a meeting, in a jobsite office and be able to access data from the internet...weather, traffic, files, etc.. On the road, pocket streets and my BT GPS are very comfortable, plotting and tracking my way across the open spaces of Oklahoma. I watch, albeit at a very low resolution, movies, stream video, view images, take pictures...hell I didn't know I liked photography so much till I got this thing. You have to hold your jaw just so, but it'll take a picture.
So, I've had all the bugs everyone before me wrote about. Most were fixed with the last ROM revision, others by a bit of gray matter and others still by sheer perseverence. What keeps kicking my ass is the device's propensity to hardware reset itself at random and without any provocation or circumstance. I lost 4 months of call logs and SMS files I had amassed. And then 2 months. And then 1 month's. Now I just run scared and delete everything, or save everyting thing on an SD.
I play several high end games on it and they work fine. I have pocket artist (think photoshop) loaded....works great. The internet is a bit slow, but bearable. (no I'm talking about when I'm BT or WiFi into a router. The GPRS is unusable even if working properly. ) The ability to network this thing AFTER and only after the ROM upgrade, and to do that networking as seemlessly as this thing does, I tip my hat to the HP/MS/TMO combo. Cudos guys!
Number nine and I sit here writing this, as I contemplate a picture msg to my sweetie - all while sitting on my throne. Yes the one in the bathroom.
It's good to be king.
MY THANKS FOR T-MOBILE'S HANDLING OF MY ACCOUNT WITH REGARDS TO THE NUMBER OF RETURNS AND THE PROMPT REPLACEMENT THERETO.
And the fact that I wasn't charged for the last eight.
I am now on my third HP iPAQ 6315 and on my second SIM Card. I cannot believe that Hewlett-Packard would attach its name to a device with a phone and camera this bad!
The camera is an insult--useless.
The phone is hopeless. The conversation breaks up all the time--my friends have asked me not to use it when I call them! They cannot take the break-up of conversations
I have gotten good service from t-mobile and for that I am grateful.
That I could pay this high a price for such an indequate device is icomprehensible to me.
I am just about ready to buy out of my contract with t-mobile AND NEVER AGAIN BO BACK.
This is not an exaggerated or over-reaction. The situation is as I have described it.
Sorry!

I am extremely disappointed in my HP IPAQ 6315, and am on my way to my third replacement unit since March. I would be interested in any legal action anyone is taking against T-Mobile; I plan to continue to force them to replace my unit until it works. Knowing that it won't, I will take them to small claims court here in Chicago after the seventh or eighth replacment to recoup my intial investment of $550 plus $350 for the contract cancellation fee T-Mobile will charge me.
I've asked T-Mobile to provide me a replacement unit of a different model, and they tell me I can buy a new one! I am very unhappy with them, and anyone who is taking the same path I would love to hear from. If anyone has a copy of that memo I'd love to see it. Thanks!

1. Phone will need to be soft reset; once reset, text messages pour in which were sent while the phone was inoperable.
2. I will have voice messages, but the phone was on and it does not indicate "missed call". I've tested this, and have had 4 bars and been able to make outbound calls when this occurs.
3. When using phone, face touches the faceplate, which causes the touch sensitive screen to activate and start programs. T-Mobile indicates this an uresolvable issue.
4. Device resets on its own, requiring start-up, realignment process. T-Mobile response is to replace the phone (for the third time).
5. Applications do not close and must be closed from the -Memory- selection. This occurs more than once per day. T-Mobile response: it's a feature. I can add unsupported third party software to truly close applications.
6. Device will freeze up during use, requiring a soft reset. T-Mobile response: yes, this happens often.
7. Phone calls sometimes cannot be made. Dial and call immediately drops without trying to connect. This does not have anything to do with signal strength. T-Mobile response: yes, common problem, no timeframe established to resolve.
8. Phone is slower than old Pocket PC. I was told this was due to the operating system taking more memory; this is untrue as this phone has MORE free memory than the old Pocket PC. T-Mobile response: yes, it was a trade-off for longer battery life. Sorry the sales rep lied.
9. I was instructed to purchase a memory storage card to save data onto, which would alleviate problem #6. There is no way to store my synchronized data to the storage card. This also had zero impact on the speed of operation. T-Mobile response: sorry the sales rep lied.
10. Device will wake-up on its own when I have it turned off. T-Mobile response: another common problem aka "a feature".
11. When using the phone, the device will freeze and will not display the -OK- button to close the phone mode. Device must be soft-booted to continue use. When device reboots, phone service is off and must manually be turned on again. T-Mobile response: another common problem with no timeframe to resolve.

can't agree more with #36.
i paid for mine 200$/bucks including service.
what pisses me off is that i cannot hear it ring and goes to voicemail directly. i will hold it for few more days and than take it back if becomes often/issue.
i have the latest bios/flash 1.10.xx which not sure what fixes but i did use the blue tooth of another cell and dumped some mp3s, made my own wma files from mp3 to ringtone... connected to my wifi @ home. i was/am about to cancell my other 30$/month wifi and use the ipaq's 9.99$/month which is a better deal than the 19.99/month. only hp...
the ringtone is not loud enough and the keyboard is not cool. i should've gone with a blackberry 7290. i like the remote terminal server, i would also loved to have the pocketputty work right for ssh2 so i can remote connect and do some stuff..
i also checked for recalls on this model and i don't mess around.. last time at&t tried some bull on me.. i got what i wanted and took care of things.. heck my t-mobile bill monthly is about 180/bucks..
I purchased the newer HP IPAQ 6235 which was recently released in Canada and found a problem with the voicemail notification. If I was in a dead zone and received a voicemail, there was no indicator when I left the dead zone. The indicator only came on after I shut the phone off and turned it on again. HP said that this was a service provider issue and the service provider said that this was an HP issue. I returned the phone the within 24 hours. Was the vociemail problem an issue with the h6315?
This 6315 device is useless, always crashing and had to reinstall evryday, luckily got back up.Camera is useless,,,and lot of problems.
I've read most of the comments for this device and they sound really familiar. I've had mine since they came out and replaced the unit once from T-Mobile. I'm looking forward to a newer PDA that has the same features of the 6315 plus GPS. T-mobile will not inform if they plan to have such a device available. Does anyone know if they will have one, when, which and would it have the new windows mobile O/S (v5) which I believe will have push technology like Blackberry.
Thanks guys. I was thinking of displaying IPAQ 6315 in the Gadget listing. Now, I think I wouldn't do so..
Am also very disappointed with my HP IPAQ 6315, I have replaced the unit 3 times since april 05.
Just read Post 36, Jim Domiano, I started typing all my complains and realized that he had covered them very well.
One thing I would like to add to it is that when I try to use the forwarding feature I can only set it up while im standing at one specific spot in the city I live in, so If i ever want to use this feature I have to make sure I drive to that spot and do it there.
I feel like I have been robbed and unfurtunately Tmobile or HP are not going to try to solve any of the current issues. im considering the option of cancelling my contract and wait another 5 years before someone gets it right. Its frustrating when you buy a device that reminds you every day that you've wasted $800 bucks on it, by crashing and freezing up every minute. Lastly I have tried to use a GPS navigation packdge with it and I have to make sure I turn the phone off while using the GPS,which at times I can get to my destiantion if i get lucky. Its a packet pc, someone explain to me why I cant multitask while using my Pocket PC.
Hi, I still like my h6315 and althought the camera is mighty dissapointing, I did not get it for the camera. I havent had the resetting problem (yet) nor have I had any problems connecting to WiFi connections (I've even connected to a low signal from an apartment across mine). As for issues about the pda coming alive when you have switched it off - You have to disable the phone if you want it to stay off, otherwise when you get a msg/call it will obviously come on again, keep in mind this is a PDA phone. As for the wireless connecting even when you dont want it to, have you switched off the wifi option?
I am definitely not saying that this phone is not flawed, but certain complaints seem to be due to the lack of understanding of the machine rather than the machine being faulty.
Cheers,
T
Sorry to do a cut and paste.... but...
I've had one of these for several months. I Have performed the T-mobile update and still get all of these problems:
1. Phone will need to be soft reset; once reset, text messages pour in which were sent while the phone was inoperable.
2. I will have voice messages, but the phone was on and it does not indicate "missed call". I've tested this, and have had 4 bars and been able to make outbound calls when this occurs.

12. Common for me to try to either answer a call or some other phone operation only to get a "Phone failed" message.
I'm an IT professional and can personally put up with the constant soft-resets that have to be performed on a twice daily basis. However I would never consider releasing this product to our user base. These problems need to be resolved ASAP (By T-mobile). I've spoken to a contact I know within MS: Apparently the T-mobile version of the OS is completely different to the MS release version because T-mobile have changed components within the device.
I thought that i was alone with my hp 6315 which worked well intially but now constantly reboots , now stopped synching , the bluetooth also sucks. It doesnt have photocontacts and the outlook integration also sucks.I paid a premium on the phone as it was availble here for 30000. Unfortunely in india we have to live with this crap unlike the Us where u could throw the phone back to the dealer (worst joke I am an HP dealer in Mumbai and dont recommend the same to any one)

I have taken T-MOBILE USA, INC. to small claims court of this device. These comments will be very helpful in my case. I'll keep you all advised...
Ok, I have filed suit in small claims court.
This is in the Everett District Court in Snohomish County, in the Communist State of Washington. The case number is S06-9. I have emailed the Executive Response Team ExecutiveResponse@T-Mobile.com all the details and the registered agent for T-Mobile is being served 1/5/06. This "team" also knows of this site.
My case hinges mostly upon that I have had the phone less than a year, it has been replaced twice and in this state, 3 strikes and you are out. All the h6315's they gave me has exactly the same problems, plus they charge me shipping to replace the phone.
I have sued for $941.00 plus costs. That is for the h6315, two batteries, a Rhino case, shipping and tax.
I have had disputes with T-Mobile in the past and have learned one thing, they will not give you a single penny back, unless you sue. My brother was a top level PM for them and told me that all representatives are "absolutely forbidden" to issue any kind of refund for any equipment. The mantra is "offer a phone for a discount (never free), but get a new one or two year contract".
Last time I sued, I got my money. Here we go again.
Why do I not go to another cell provider? Well, anyone that has used as many cells that I have, I can tell you what you already know. ALL the providers suck. It boils down to which set of headaches you want to live with.
At least with T-Mobile, the small claims law suit seems to work, so far. At least it get's their attention and eventually I get these things resolved.
As for Comment #27, please, you don't know anything about lawyers, and it would be nice if you kept your nefarious comments off this forum.
