Symbian licensing Microsoft's ActiveSync
Not as much of a shock as it might once have been given that Nokia and palmOne have already taken the plunge, but now Symbian Ltd. just became the latest licenses for Microsoft's Exchange Server ActiveSync software, which they're planning to offer as a plug-in for their Symbian OS. If using Symbian is something of a political gesture on your part, don't freak out—you're not going to be required to use Microsoft's software if you don't want to. Unless your boss makes you, that is, because what's really going on is that they're licensing ActiveSync to better appeal to corporate users who absolutely need Exchange Server compatibility.

At this moment ActiveSync is not much of a competitor to RIM. It's not true push email technology like the Blackberry technology but obviously that will be changing when Microsoft puts more money into development. There's also the issue that many of these phones have cameras and expandable memory slot which many companies have banned for security issues. There's a reason why the Blackberry doesn't have any of the features.
This has got to be a win win situation, hasn't it? I can't wait to have Microsoft Media player running on a Nokia Symbian phone as well because Nokia's Transfer music software is, er, lets say it works ... but it's not exactly a strong point :/
