Mitac is rolling out their Mio136 compact GPS solution to North American markets. The unit bundles a GPS receiver with an MP3 player and SD expansion slot in a 4.72-inch casing. The device can serve dual-duty as a handheld or in-car unit, and ships with case, headphones, mounting gear, North American map CD, and a 256MB SD card. Specs are as previously described: 300MHz Intel CPU, 32MB onboard memory, 3.5-inch TFT LCD for viewing in 2D or 3D, running Windows CE .NET 4.2. One can be had for an MSRP of $499.

y is GPS so expensive?
From what I've read, this is essentially the same unit as the Navman 510 GPS unit.

I've actually been looking to buy the Navman for the last couple of weeks. It's sold at Amazon for about $415.
If this unit had a 20 gig hard drive and plays video also, then I'd sell my Megaview 566 and get this.
It really doesn't sound so expensive, when you compare to what other companies have on offer, this is the least expensive (that I've seen) so far.
I recently bought a Mazda 3, and my only disappointment was that the in-dash navigator was too hard to find, so I bought a car without one. Now that I've actually seen the ($2000!) stock GPS that Mazda offers, I'm glad I didn't get it - it's not even as good as the unit Hertz puts in their rental cars.
I'll wait a little bit for the discounters to get ahold of the Mitac (or Navman), but once it hits $400, heck, that's the same price as an iPod - I'll be dropping Benjamins!
Okay then drop your benjamins.. they're $375 on eBay.
Hey, that's my office right there! Corner of 17th and Mission, top floor above Thrift Town.
