SRI's Trauma Pod
We seriously hope that they're not calling this the "trauma pod" just to cash in on the cachét of a certain other gadget (we'll cut 'em some slack since the term has actually been around for a while), but SRI just landed a $12 million research grant from the Defense Department to develop a battlefield robot that can be used to remotely perform surgery on wounded soldiers. SRI says that they're still at least a decade away from the trauma pod becoming a reality, mainly because of the massive wireless bandwidth that's needed for telesurgery.

I can just see the headlines now:
Patient died during surgery due to massive lag, and someone on the network using bandwidth to download mp3's.
