GPS, Butler County, Ohio wants GPS implants in ex-cons
Remind us not to move to Butler County in Ohio. The County Commissioner there is proposing that anyone on parole or probation be required to have GPS monitoring chips implanted so their movements can be tracked remotely, this despite the fact that sub-dermal GPS chips don't exist (he's probably thinking of RFID chips). Not to be outdone, apparently the county sheriff would like to take things up a notch even beyond that, saying, "I would support the type of electronic monitoring that delivers an electrical shock to an offender if he or she is doing something in violation of probation."

Whoa, check it out! That's where I went to high school and college! Yeah, I'll tell you one thing: tucked away in the middle of miles and miles of cornfield, nestled neatly in the middle of Hamilton! Ohio, a bustling metropolis, is a dude who probably maybe sorta needs to be kept track of. With GPS. Or shocking RFID.
Wow! I work in the IT dept. for a City government in Butler County... I hadn't heard of this until now. Craziness!
Ummm... how exactly do you track someone with GPS?
GPS can give a user his location, and the only way to relay that info to someone else is use a wireless network. So the second the parolee goes into a place with bad or no reception, he disappears off the watchers screens.
But its a stretch anyway to imagine that not only will they implant a GPS chip+antenna module, but also a wireless network chip+antenna module; PLUS a battery (which will last how long?), and constantly transmit via microwave-frequency networks which will probably give this guy some internal cookin'. Oh, and did I mention that batteries are notorious for throwing off uncomfortable heat?
Someone buy these Ohio governuts a clue.
Wow, first I've heard of it as well. My wife and I were recently looking at the mapquest-like sex offender database Simon Leis has for Ohio, and were a little nervous by how close they are. But, it does seem like it's going a little far to actually implant one. If they're that worried, do the bracelet option. Easier to deal with.
Beavis and butthead would love this sorta technology....."yeah yeah.....burrrr you shocked me you butt head.....burrrr whoa you butt munch stop it.......ouch,.....I am cornholio I'm searching for TP for my bung hole....yeah yeah ..."

As another person in Butler County (where I attend school), law enforcement would greatly benefit from being able to remotely shock some of the people that live around here.
They may not understand the technology, but their hearts are in the right place.
Sounds pretty cool. But they should also have webcams mounted on their heads and people should be able to log on and shock them remotely if they feel that it's warranted.
Ahhh I guess this is more Red state justice - why don't you just brand their foreheads while you're at it!
Why would someone say "Remind us not to move to Butler County (because they're thinking of using GPS or somethg to track offenders.)? Seems to me the only reason someone would have a problem with this is, or should be, those people that are criminals and would be tracked so as not to hurt us innocent non-criminals. Something has to be done and NOW. If you want to be a criminal then suffer the consequences, so that we innocent non-criminals can be protected from you.
