Israel's saying no to cellphones on April 4th
So the story goes like this: Israel's Ministry of Communications (which we're assuming resembles our own FCC) cut
interconnection fees for cross-network calling, which in turn turned up the prices for cellphone airtime on the part of
the carriers. This is, of course, odd since one would expect such a thing to lower end-user prices—hence the
grass-roots consumer reaction to call cellphones on April 4th quite unkosher. But perhaps more odd is the fact that to
strike against these carriers' cost increases, their consumer base is choosing to rally around an effort that will, at
least for the day of April 4th, further cut carrier operating costs—c'mon, it's not like any carrier believes their
customers could carry on without cellphones forever. And color us jaded, but we have a hard time believing any
self-respecting cellphone user will even be able to shut off voluntarily for a whole day, especially business and
landline-free users.

you don't know israel. Israel is the land where the entire nation's public school kids in high school went on strike because money was cut for field trips.
in the US we'd all just get Fs :)
Yeah, but boycotting a service for which you've already paid has no effect.
The only way the carriers would feel it is if the boycott was permanent -- drop the service altogether.
Witness the "one day" gas boycotts we've had in the U.S.
Lot of good they did, right?
Who wrote this up? Were they drunk? Is english their second language?
I still don't know what's going on?
Isreal is calling cellphone unkosher on April 4th, and calling cellphones by turning them off for the day and making it cost more for the carriers to have operating costs. Ok I got it now. Sorry about that.
how would israel cutting interconnecting fees LOWER end-user costs? I can only see it directly having no effect and indirectly raising rates (companies compensating for lost revenue of the fees).
Engadget need another photo to go with their reports about Israel. The stereotypical jew pic has to go. Not to mention that the only Israelis that look like that are less than 10% of the population in Israel. I'm done! shabbat Salom m&^@^# f*&***s.

Hah, will never work. Israel is a country that has a HUGE cell phone infestation. I know less than 5 Israelis without cell phones, and more than 20 with 2+ phones.
seriouslyyyy, about 9% of the population in Israel (or jews for that matter) look like this picture.
In other news, Arab developers have annonuced new exploding cell phones, particulary suited for suicide bombers, that work on all major telephone networks worldwide.
No word on bluetooth support
Yeah.. that picture has gotta go. We don't really look like that! Why not put up a pic of, say, Natalie Portman or any other hot Israeli chick with a cellphone instead of that zealot?
Natalie Portman is cute, but I don't associate her with cell phones. Whatever you do, do not use this pic
