PSP IRC client
Enter another chapter in the PSP web browser hacks
family: a PSP IRC chat application. For now you're
limited to the #pspirc channel, but the author has plans to expand the codebase to allow channel switching, plus add
some inline games to the #pspirc channel, such as a trivia bot. You can use the built-in
PSP keyboard interface or take
advantage of the ultra-mini keyboard the developer built in to the client. Yep, we tried it and yep, it works.

another app that's useless on PSP and will be fun to play with when it comes out for the DS, the market leader...
input device for the psp is what, exactly?
Fantastic. Just waiting to get IRC on my toaster and I'll be set.
Jeez, you guys are really proving that the PSP is for losers. (No, I'm not a Nintendo fanboy. The DS is for children.)
The PSP is about playing with yourself. Or watching movies with yourself. It's a loser machine. Real gamers game with friends. Beer, pizza, multiplayer football or Halo. Try doing that on the PSP. You have to buy two systems, and two copies of the game in question.
And people watch movies with their wives or girlfriends. If you watch movies by yourself on the subway, you really are a loser. Get a newspaper or a book and broaden your mind or something.
The PSP is also not a serious device for true gadget freaks. Why? It does nothing well. Music and movies? Don't make me fucking laugh. Games? You got to be kidding if playing a game through a little keyhole is called serious gaming. Grow up, Sony fanboys. The PSP is a loser machine. Get a life. If you play games, get a PS2 or an Xbox.
Otherwise, fine, play with yourself. The second you pull that device out, everyone on the subway or bus will know you for the loser you are.
this thing is gonna be hot, people are hacking it left right and center..
if only they included a bloody harddrive, i culd see winamp on it...
come on, lay off the loser talk. Yeah, the PSPs for solo gamers, so what. And yeah, it doesn't do music or video well. But lay off the rich loners here, man. They deserve respect, too. (I'm a loner. Just not a rich one.)
I have to admit that the only ones I've seen with a PSP so far are... well, let's say not the kind you expect to be a big hit with the ladies.
I can't believe you guys are all excited about this IRC thing. It's like so painful to enter text on the PSP. What the fuck is the point? I almost tempted to believe all the loser talk if you guys are getting all jizzy about this.
it sounds like someone has some issues!
so your saying the first ever portable gaming system that is capable of playing multiplayer online is for people that dont play online?
and since when has halo, beer, pizza and football been the determining factor in loserness??
you think beer is cool?
beer??
Anyone who is so fixated on riding public transit probably couldn't afford a PSP.
freddy needs to grow up or get laid, too much frustration dude
chill out people
psp plays video, games and music out the box
and with future firmware upgrades and all these hacks its gonna do more than any other gadget out there can do and its gonna do it better.
Freddy, you're a homo troll with issues. And Halo is for american closet queers. Scientific fact. *nod*
Freddy, you post on a blog. Enough said.
Excellent point jablome, he's probably just mad because his mom didn't purchase one for him.
#2...
"Otherwise, fine, play with yourself. The second you whip your device out, everyone on the subway or bus will know you for the loser you are."
Fixed!
While I may not drink beer and get together with friends to play Halo, I'm still pretty fucking cool. Here's why I want this freaking device - and I don't ride the bus (metro or short bus.)
Gaming doesn't interest me. I travel a lot by airplane and I'm lugging around a laptop so I can browse the web via wi-fi (my smartphone blows for web browsing) while on trips. This device has the processor, screen, and wi-fi that will allow me to surf the web w/o having to drag the laptop beast with me. If it can play a movie while I'm sitting on the plane, all the better.
No, I'm not excited about IRC. I am cooler than you though (although I don't eat much pizza these days..) and I want a PSP with a web browser immediately.
Kendall - You've never been to New York City, have you? The subway or bus is the *only* way to get around here. Cars are for suckers and taxis are for when you're drunk. Otherwise, you ride the friggin' subway.
#14, you know you could just get a pocketpc right?
This is a very neat hack.
Has anyone considered that Sony will be working to block hacks such as this with future firmware updates?
I envision a meeting with all the engineers - they're going over every single PSP hack that has been posted all over the net, and they're trying to come up with ways to block them or shut them down in future firmware updates.
I'd bet on it. What do you guys think?
Every time I see a cool hack like this, I come closer and closer to running the store and picking one up. Hopefully I can hang on to self-control until the kinks are worked out.
If your smartphone is a lousy browser, what makes you think the PSP is going to be any improvement. Horrendous rendering speed, horrendous text input, horrendous resource issues. Have you looked at some of Sony's ultralight PCs or competing brands? More money but you're getting the real thing with no major compromises as opposed to the dancing bear of PSP web browsing.
You'll notice few Clie owners so hell bent on making their device a gaming/entertainment device. (They already are/were)
The Clie PEG-TH55 is the PSP's grandpappy at the very least.
Why the big push to try to validate the PSP as a datacentric device through hacks when it obviously isn't designed to be?
The hoops you have to jump through aren't worth it at the end of the day.
Yeah, IRC through gaming controls okay that's realistic.
Sony doesn't want that stuff or else the Clie line would still be around.
That being said, the screen is awesome and it's a neat gizmo.
I'm just not sold on it because I need a device that combines true usefulness along with methods of distraction.
(Watch 'em release some stuff to prove me wrong now. I'd be happy to be wrong.)
#2, you obviously don't know what a "real gamer" is. What you described in your post, the guy playing Halo while drinking beer and eating pizza, is an accurate description of the modern frat boy.
First, to quell the rubbish about "losers" on the subway: what do you do while you're on the subway? Do you always bring a group of friends with you whereever you go, to drink and eat pizza with? Some of us need to go places alone, going to your place of gainful employment comes to mind (that's "work" to you.) I, personally, like to listen to music or read a book. Is watching a movie so different?
As for 'real gamers,' a real gamer is one who is dedicated to his or her game. A real gamer practices with a team in a serious, professional manner. If one of my team members showed up to a practice drunk, my team would be a little more than annoyed.
Modern day frat boys need to understand that they aren't 'real gamers' by any stretch of the imagination.
"Modern day frat boys need to understand that they aren't 'real gamers' by any stretch of the imagination."
What? Haha. What does that even mean? It's such a broad generalization.
I have a friend in a fraternity at school and he's probably the biggest gamer I've ever known (he has pretty much ever newer system except for PSP).
I wish people like Freddy would grow up and give it a rest. Everyone has different reasons for buying and playing games or systems. While I personally don't think video games are social activities, I find it akin to watching TV together, an arguement could be made that the PSP is just as social as an Xbox or PS2. Monetary issues don't determine if something is a social activity or not; it's the act itself. If there are 2 of us playing PSP together then it's social, by your definition. There is also the possibility of playing against someone you don't know, via wireless. I'm also surprised to see Freddy talk about "broadening you mind" right after a paragraph of beer, pizza and multiplaer football. HA! ya, that's enlightened. I personally think the PSP is great. The portability of music, games and movies? Ideal for someone who isn't a shutin and needs the security of his 4 walls and deadbolt. It's also funny for me to hear people talk elitiest about one set of gamers being cooler then another set. Face the facts, 'gamers' aren't especially cool. While someone who plays games can be cool it isn't being a gamer that makes you cool. Try picking up a chick by telling her about your fantasy football team rank or hardcore halo experience. yawn, that's all from me.
#14, I really want a psp too... but if you want one for browsing the web, that's pretty f*ckin stupid. Get a Pocket PC.
And if your laptop is a "beast" (assuming that means it is physically large)... get a smaller laptop for travel. I have a sony vaio tr and it rocks. Most people who see it think it's a portable dvd player at first.
Freddy: I dont think playing a video game by yourself is any more outcast-ish than listening to an ipod. You are still secluding yourself and are alone. I can see you saying "you are a loser if you listen to music with headphones. unless you are sitting around with friends drinking beer and getting fat when you listen to music you are a loser." Seriously, grow up and get a clue.
#23. Hows the Vaio Tr series? I was planing to get that but they have some other series now.
This isn't really all that revolutionary (the way I see it). They're still using the Wipeout browser, right? So this is not a native PSP application.
Okay, so this is a nice proof-of-concept but that's pretty much it. Theoretically, there's nothing that stops you from setting up a web2ssh gateway, and using your PSP to administer your ssh-enabled server. It's cool but that doesn't mean it's practical.
#24, the Vaio TR series rocks. I havent seen the new T series in person so I cant really comment. I know they ditched the web cam though which sucks (i actually use mine all the time). The tr is just so good looking... silver on the outside and a pearly white on the inside. Everyone who sees it comments on it, so it wouldnt be good if you try to work discreetly in public =]
I think Tr looks pretty sweet. However, the T series looks good also but its way hella expensive 2200+. Tr sounds like a really great canidate right now for me.
Sounds like the FREDDY guy was a victim of Micheal Jackson.
Interesting posts. I'm not going to say the PSP is for losers, but I have to agree with the freddy troll that the PSP is not a good machine for social gamers--people who like having a few guys over on a friday night for some fraggin' action. I would also grudgeingly admit that an Ipod is a much better device for music on the run. (I guess no on here would disagree with that.)
umm.... isn't playing online for losers, too...?
Everyone's going to think that something someone else does here is "Loserish". So let's forget that one. True - IRC on the psp is pretty damn useless. Still, in the sense of a gadget, it's fun. Expensive and ,ultimately, pretty pointless, but that's what makes it fun. Maybe someone will get a mini linux in there. There's already one, i forget what it's called, that runs off a 64mb usb card on 386/486's. The psp uses memory sticks doesn't it? I've not really thought about this. Just a nice though before you flame me :D
The loser talk is a bit overboard, but I do wonder if Sony overestimated the market for "mature" portable gaming. Let's face it: adults really don't play portable games, and those who do are kind of viewed as, well, a little "immature." I don't know, it's maybe subconcious or something, but I do understand the thought that the PSP is for a certain kind of gadget freak that doesn't really get out much.
In the States, at least, adults who game tend to do so at home with friends or family. The portable gaming market has traditionally been for children, and it's very hard to get people to think differently when you pull out a PSP in public. It's just not cool like an i-pod. Nor is it business-like like a PDA. It just feels childish.
At the moment, both the browser and this irc application is nonsense, (although I just came back from a 3 day trip going accross my state with no laptop, phone, or choice where we go, and the only thing that saved my life was this psp and wipeout browser to check up on tech/gaming news from wifi hotspots), But the thing to remember is that
A. These are "hacked" funtions, once people get their hands on a dev kit, they wont have to piggy-back functions from other things (in this case, the wipeout browser), you can make your own and run it straight from the OS (If you have looked there are two memory stick selections in the "Games" Category on the psp, one is all your saved data, and the other is actually for running programs straight off the memory stick),
B. Their Will be a decent usb keyboard before long, and that will solve all the ds fanboi ruckas how it doesnt have an good way to input text.. which will Make (A.) MUCH better....
So as I see it, this is all just a preview of whats to come, psp will actually be very effecient at browsing and eventually irc (hopefully, because chances are that there wont be a 1st party app).
SO... stfu and wait to make your damned comments bashing this thing... YES IT SUCKS RIGHT NOW!
I think some people are misinterpreting news about PSP hacks. I really don't believe that anyone should buy a PSP because theres a new browsers or IRC client or hack of any sort. But if, like me, you simply enjoy owning a PSP and playing games on one, adding on free features after you've already made a purchase just makes the deal sweeter.
Why put Linux/IRC/whatever on every gadget in sight? I can only suggest that it is because people feel accomplished when they solve a problem on their own. Or enjoy finding new uses for established products. It is in human nature to create, and utilize new tools. Sometimes, the purpose isn't readily apparent, but it is still satisfying to do so.
I think it's funny how so many fanboys in here are saying the PSP is going to do everything better than every gadget out there. Ummm, guys, there's no harddrive in this thing. And the software is a pain in the ass to convert video files. Don't kid yourself on PSPs future as a personal media player. It's success will be determined solely on it's gaming ability. Even sadder is the fact that the Sony execs themselves seem to think this thing has a future as a media device. They're in for a market shock, though, if they think this will be anything but a gaming machine. No one will buy UMD movies or music, and no one in their right mind is going to use memory sticks for bulk media storage.
Did Spanky really say he'd prefer this thing to a laptop? Ha!
Freddy you pathetic, your talking about handhelds in general, not the PSP idiot
But the PSP is trying to be an adult toy, whereas handheld gaming machines have always been for children. It makes sense to judge the PSP separately.
I won't say the PSP is for losers, but it's not a gadget for most adult gamers that I know. We don't have time to play games in public. (Nor do we want to look like a child.) We have e-mails to answer, articles to read, cars to drive. When we play games, it's with a few friends on the weekend, or with the kids before bedtime.
If you play games by yourself in public, fine, I don't care, but understand that people around you still consider it a child's activity. It will take a long time to break that mindset. Right now, the PSP just feels like a gadget for guys who love their gadgets a little too much...
I wrote a good guide on how to use this irc software. Its located in http://www.pspcrazy.com/irconpsp.htm . Enjoy and leave cmment here or on the forum. also why does engadget rwmove my tutorial links?
Hey, both #33 and #39, the reason why portable gaming is considered childish and such is the same reason that ten years ago Video gaming in general was considered to be childish. Nintendo dominated the home market then, and has dominated the portable market for years. Then Sony came along with the Playstation and changed the home gaming experience. Now it isn't just for kids, even though some people still have that misconception. It will probably take a while, but with the PSP people will start to realize that Portables don't have to be just for kids. My main complaint is that everyone is judging the PSP rather harshly and it has only been out a week and a half. It takes time before the real genius of a system is seen. If you really don't think that people will buy UMD movies, then why do you think that VideoNow did so well? It even came out with a color version a year after the black and white version. I myself have wondered whether I really want to spend almost as much as a DVD for a UMD movie, but if I can pull out the PSP and either play a game or watch a movie, I think that I will buy movies for it. Also I believe sony is allowing other companies to make UMD movie players, so people won't have to own a PSP to watch the movies. There are a lot of questions about PSPs future, but I think that it definitely has one. New functions and new ideas will push this system far.
1.Beer is good.
2.Pizza is Tasty.
3.Making gadgets do things they weren't originally intended to do is fun, especially when they come equipped with big, pretty screens and things.
4.Hacks and work-arounds are often buggy and inconvenient.
5.Today's hack may be tomorrow's polished product.
6.Trolls often make valid points.
7.Trolls are still jackasses.
That is all.
ok, soo a number of you guys mentioning that gamers, weather they play online, on the tv, or on a hand held , are losers. You say its impossible to pick up chicks talking about halo or fantasy football or whatever. Just think about it, girls like something different, and if you got the balls to start a convo with a game, the woman will appeciate your confidence and remember you. Plus the harder you make it on yourself to get with a girl, the more pimp you are if you succeed. These days it takes balls and quick thinking mind to get the girls attention, not the fact that you dont own a psp and say everyone that does is a loser. By the way fred, you could get a psp becuase u can put porn on it, it might come in "handy" for all those sausage-fests you running
Namaste from India,
Seeing this heated discussion over the PSP and handhelds , I could hardly contain myself from posting something... I presume that most people here are from some part of the First World, most likely from the US so Im sure an out of town point of view could also be interesting for you guys.
Firstly , this is at # 3 Freddy a.k.a. the Cro-Magnon man , Im sure with his knuckles dragging on the floor he is not able to aptly hold and use a handheld to its full capability so hes simply jealous. Dude, if you think that gaming is all about beer, pizza and a few friends then you are only 25% right... Its more about the gaming mastery, the escape into other dimensions and a global language being spoken within a few keys and joypads... hell Im willing to go all out and call it a cross cultural revolution!
I have been a lifetime gamer , Im 25 years old now, and so within my short lifetime every home gaming system was invented , thrived and moved into extinction... I started off with the Zx Spectrum plus , moved on to the original atari and old school commodore , Sega master system , Nintendo 8bit , Sega mega drive ... etc etc i can go on and on up until now where i have a ps2 and Xbox side by side both with mod chips. So i think i can speak as a lifetime gammer in saying that video games are one of the biggest and thriving home entertainment industries in the world today ... they generate more money the Hollywood (where Im sure you get enough of your macho vibe from Freddy maann)
The PSP kicks ass, Im a Psychedelic trance DJ and producer, and so have to take allot of long flights and car rides to get to gigs all over , and now with the psp in my hand I can virtually tune out of my surroundings and move into momentary digital bliss when i snap on metal gear acid or NFS undergound.
With what other gadget can we be sitting on the beaches of GOA stoned of our minds and when the sun is too hot or we are too lazy to swim on the beach , just whip out a couple PSPs and start a serious gaming session wirelessly...
Oh and about the point that you brought up about handheld gamers being losers, mate if you could only see the multi-cultral , international hotties all around us , including my girlfriend who is one of the top models in our country ... you would deffinatly want to be a handheld playing loser like me :)
WORD!
Hell yea to namaste
Thanks for bringing up the point that gameing is extremly popular internationally. Piracy of games is the biggest thing in my country. Everyone from movie stars to farmers play games. Bring a psp on a bus, its stolen, everyone wants one.
DS.. targeted toward teens, but since moms thought it was next game boy, they bought their 5 year old 1 for christmas so now most ds games will be E in america. PSP has a full line up of bloody games coming, just take a look at the games and think weather they are targeted at kids or not.
"With what other gadget can we be sitting on the beaches of GOA stoned of our minds and when the sun is too hot or we are too lazy to swim on the beach , just whip out a couple PSPs and start a serious gaming session wirelessly..."
The Nintendo Ds, versing eachother wirelessly in Metroid. Or with the Nokia N-Gage QD, playing mercenaries v.s. spies with no wires in Splinter Cell Chaos Theory.
Guys, you have to remember that the Sony is aiming the PSP towards the "iPod" generation. The way the PSP was designed was to be the first handheld video game system to offer most of that generation's wants and needs: namely, music, video, pictures, and gaming. And that is what the Sony came out with. Also, Sony realized that things change and that the public will want more and more to be done from the PSP. I have a feeling that the engineers of the PSP and their dev people purposefully made the PSP this easy to hack, as opposed the generations of Game Boys from the past. It would allow people to experiment with the hardware, giving Sony ideas and a feel on what the public wants in the PSP along with games.
The IRC idea is a great idea; imagine walking into a theater for Sin City, and there's a piece of paper with a PSP address on it for you to tune into. Anyone with a PSP on them can access it, and this is where the PSP truly shines. First, a laptop, no matter how small it is, is a laptop. You don't just bring a laptop to a movie, because all you'll do is watch a DVD or access the net on it; it's just too big to carry around for those purposes. The PSP is small enough to bring everywhere; sure, it's not as great to access the net in, watch movies in, or listen to over a gig of music in, but it's the has all three abilities in the same small machine. If you want DVD quality for your movies, go bring a DVD player. If you want to listen to your ENTIRE music library, take your iPod. But if you want both in the same package without the luggage, PSP is the way to go. The point is versatility, NOT quality. And the quality isn't that bad to begin with. Want DVD quality? The UMDs will give you that. But for me, who sits on a train everyday to go to work, watching Return Of The King on my PSP off my mem stick is enough for me.
Secondly, how can the PSP be NOT a social machine? Walking into a movie and talking on IRC while you're waiting doesn't strike me as anti-social, you know. Also, most games DO NOT NEED one game per person! Freddy, if you had bought one, you would already know that certain games will let you download data onto another PSP, and let you play that way, thus letting multiplayer with ONLY ONE UMD.
Admittedly, there are flaws right now...the only browser available is the Wipeout Pure browser, and it's so unwieldy to use. Typing is a pain, unless if you're patient. The UMD versions of movies on the PSP are going for almost DVD price, which makes me skeptical to the demand for them. The battery life is rather short, and is just enough to watch a UMD movie. However, its advantages definitely outweighs its flaws. The ability to watch movies, listen to music, view pictures, play games comparable to PS2 games, AND still slip it into your pocket is more than you can ask from a handheld. With great games like Ridge Racer, NFS, Wipeout Pure, and Metal Gear Ac!d, this is more than enough to fill my gaming hunger on the road. It may not be as innovative as the DS, but it takes what the Game Boy has tried to do from the beginning and perfected it: entertainment on the road. Besides, with only games such as Feel the Magic: XX/XY and other puzzle games coming out for the DS and its admittedly cool touchpad, I'd rather get some eye candy from my movies, listen to my music, and learn to drift on Ridge Racer on my PSP.
Nintendo: if you're reading this, consider coming out with some solid first-person shooters and other GOOD games that really utilize the touch-pad, and I'll consider buying the DS. Until then, i'll leave that touchpad for the kids to play with. Take consolation in the fact that I'm trading in my PS2 for a Gamecube just to play the upcoming Legend of Zelda game. Peace.
Hey, IRC isn't exactly loner, youre talking to ppl. I like the PSP especially because of this because there's also a MSN Messenger, too. I like talkin to friends when they're not in earshot (which happens alot livin in the sticks). Typing on it isn't too bad if you get the gist of it and are already a pretty fast typer (40+ wpm right here). The PSP is geared to people round the teens, and people who are on the move. I wouldn't recommending it if you are going to use it for ever. this is the first BIG system that uses UMD that i've seen. But if youre like me, got round $300, live some ways from town, and travel alot, then the PSP is right for you. Don't expect it to be a home theatre, guys. I mean, its not meant to be, it just has that basic option :). This is a really good system for people like me (got frins to IM and want something to play games on). Btw, the first of a kin is always flawed. Hopefully, most chinks in the armor'll be buffed in the second generation. Hey, I ride public transportation, for about 1-2 hours a day on the bus to school. Why not be a little anti-social, and watch a movie with some friends. It couldnt hurt ;). The PSP is the frontier in gaming tech right now, and if youre in this website, then that's where to be.
Freddy, you are an idiot. i just bought a PSP, have my own house my own car, good job awesome kid and a girlfriend better looking than any girl you will get. Sure sound like a loser, huh? "The PSP is a loser machine." on what basis. dont be mad because you cant afford one. By the way i have a PS2, Ps1, Xbox, and a PSP. and the PSP is my new number two after the Xbox.
Lol , u know why they make blobs??? to discuss topics. U know why u guys come to them??? any idea at all, well let me tell u, u flamers come to flame. period. not all of u, but the 1s who know who im talking about, when hackers are just being inventive....... I skate, I smoke pot, I game, does that make me a loser, i have a psp, i listen to music with it while i skate because it dont skip like a cd player.... i play counter-strike professionaly, i know what gaming is. period.
Well "A loosers machine", how funny it that people always talk like that. I'm 21 years old and I am a student for molecular biology. I do "bodybuilding" and enjoy my life, I have a lot of friends and I don't consider my self as a looser, but I have a PSP and that thing is awesome. The DS is just a mere "toy", ever considert that a "mobile gaming station" should be "mobile". The DS has a stick as input device so it's quiet unUsable on the move, also graphics are crappy. The PSP has a sleek desing and good feature, like Wlan and THAT IS FOR PLAYING WITH FRIEND'S dude. But the main thing is it is a mobile device for people who like to play anywhere. So what u said is completely useless. It's a good device and I dont have to carry a TVset with me all the time when I am at the uni and wait for the next lesson.
it's not exactly a client actually, just a website with web irc on it...hmph hope someone makes real client soon :/
Are you kidding me? Whats all this loser talk. The very fact that you sit there judging people that you've never met based on a CONTRAVERSIAL piece of technology is amazing. Severe insecurities lie within you and its disgusting. Your bored little minds are sitting at home hating on others who have things you don't. As for the person that said a PSP isn't something that youd see a guy thats popular with the ladies with, UM WTF are you talking about??? Do you always bring your toys on dates with you?? Personally I don't and by the time she got around to seeing my toys ida already laid some pipe. Get a life quit calling people losers cause that merely reflects back on yourself. Get a job and youl be able to afford these things, then maybe you can judge. Haters....
I must be an even bigger looser than the rest! Not only do I own a PSP, but waited longer to get it in white. Do I care you don't like the PSP, Freddy? Nope. At the end of the day whilst you spend time carefully wording insults that Sony won't read, I'm race tuning cars, evading police, online gaming, browsing the web, deleting spam and defying boredom, or what ever else I choose to do. Thats the great thing about it, theres endless options.
Also, PSP > Fifa.
