A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

#50, are you Samsung's mp3 player designer?? Because Samsung specs just sound the same...
Is it just me, or do the screen and controls seem to be out of place? God, the NW-HD5 doesn't even compete with the great design of the iPod. The UI looks bad also.
Go Apple!
WTF? This is just a HD3 layed out sideways. Exactly the same size when compared to the ipod.
I'm sticking with my HD3.
I don't know why they insisted to make the Walkman ugly.
Now don't get me wrong I would love to see something better than the iPod but unfortunately it wont be for a while beacuse an iPod killer will require the following;
Scroll wheel ... something others can't use due to a patent and licensing. A scoll wheel is the only feasible way to quickly wade thru large volumes of files no matter what you might think.
AAC suport ... to get current iPod and AAC users to switch to the new player. No one wants to re-rip their music.
Simple software for loading tunes ... iTunes wins hands down at the moment but a decent competing program is always possible.
Simple interface for operation ... possible as well.
Large aftermarket accessories base ... the iPod is miles in front here. New comer will have to sell truckloads of players before accessories manufacturers start to follow suit.
So basically the next iPod killer will be the next iPod.
The competition has a lot of work to do.
To #55:
Well, no matter what YOU might think, I have tried plenty of other ways to scroll through hundreds of songs other than apple's scroll wheel, and there are other options out there as good as apple's click wheel. The Rio Carbon has a wheel in the top right corner that is oriented like a volume control on a portbale CD player, but bigger with better grooves and way easier to use, which is as good as apple's click wheel. Also, there has not yet been a touch interface (like on the Zen Micro) made that is as good as the click wheel, but from my tests of products out there, it is definitely possible if someone prefected the sensitivity. So, Cyberwhore (nice name), there are definitely feasible alternatives to the click wheel already, and possibly better ones in the future (it is stupid to think there is no possible way something new cannot come along that is better) if you just open your mind and actually try other things.
Spin wheel 3/8ths of a turn ... lift finger ... move finger back to where you started ...spin wheel another 3/8ths of a turn ... lift finger ... spin wheel another 3/8ths of a turn ... Not very smooth when scrolling thru large lists. What about lefthanders?
Vertical touch interface ... bit better but still clumsy.
Other option is to spin your thumb around in a circle. Clockwise or anti-clockwise depending on which way you want to go. Speed sensitive and the faster you spin it, it will actually "change up a gear" to get you to where you want to go quicker.
There are plenty of fish in the sea but none come close.
You're right, it is stupid to think that something new wont come along but it is very hard to imagine something simpler than a wheel.
Haha the SONY fanboys are defintely smoking some whacky sh*t. I guess they're all pissed because SONY's DAPs aren't doing all that great so smoking something hallucinogenic is their only means to escape reality. This is not the nail in iPod's coffin, this is a bunch of loose SONY screws...
The iPod is number one for a reason and it isn't because it looks ugly...LMAO. The iPod rave will die eventually, but it isn't going to be at the hands of a FUGLY DAP that's wearing rose tinted WALKMAN goggles. I hate to break it to ya, but ironically the iPod is the successor to SONY's WALKMAN.
The one thing I haven't seen mentioned here is the "stunning tilt follow" function that turns the display according to which way is up. I hear that and immediately think "Okay, so that sounds like a complete gimmick". It is apparent that the buttons do not shift with the display at all, therefore you flip your unit and the screen follows but now you have to think a bit to control the unit's 9 buttons. What is the real purpose? I mean seriously, is it made just so you can say "Hey look what I can do!" because ti doesn't seem too be established with ergonomics and usability. Also it would be a big mistake if they didn't add a lock feature to stop this from happening as I can see some serious irritation when it's not wanted. It seems like this could have been left out entirely for another more important/useful function.
Stepping off of the original point I interjected, the Sony player looks disjointed somehow...I can't quite put my finger on it, I think it may be the Brushed metal with black and purple display and clear buttons that remind me of a family game we all know. It just doesn't feel like it all pulls together as one piece somehow. It is a nice size and also the battery life is great (30 hours playing mp3's and 40 ONLY for atrac playback) I can appreciate the brushed metal since it makes it scratch resistant. Interchangeable batteries was a pretty good idea, I still find myself not wanting to deal with that kind of extra but I am sure there are others who will consider this a definitive buying point.
I can't see this dethroning the iPod, it is indeed the synaptic scroll wheel that makes it really functional. It feels like one piece and is generally nice, I sometimes find myself not entirely thrilled about the color of the scroll wheel but it certainly doesn't detract from the overall package. I'll wait for the next iPod as I see great things in the 5th Generation of the iPod and it's successors. If something better comes along I'll consider it but there is just no reason to at the moment.
A counterpoint opinion.
I have begun to ponder the same question that #14 has posed: how long will the iPod fad last? Whether or not this or any other mp3 is the "nail in the ipod's coffin" is irrelevant. Rather, I wonder if the iPod will eventually become a victim of its own success.
I purchased an iPod mini when it was first released about a year ago. While I have been quite happy with it(and have had several issues with it too) I have almost begun to resent it, so to speak.
When I walk the streets, I see iPods. When i go to the gym, I see iPods. When I'm on the subway, I see iPods. While I'm certainly no contrarian, I believe when a product is as ubiquitous as the iPod currently is, it's simply no longer "cool".
I'm not predicting the imminent demise of the iPod, I'm simply saying it's decline may not be as far off as everyone thinks(1 1/2 years or so?).
It's a wonderful device with superior software, but I'm not sure it will be able to sustain it's market position if it loses "cool" factor.
what do u think would be better to buy this sony thing or iPod photo 30 gb? Does anyone know the price of sony's thing?
I really dig what iRiver have given one of their DAPs:
it can act as a USB host for anything that behaves as an external HD over USB, so...
>> :-) !!!!
instant piracy.
doesn't work with their own flash players though, as they rely on special software.
I won't change my mind until someone else makes another player that can "leach".
Atrac3plus still kicks AAC's ass. It may be propietary, but it still sounds the best. All my music is in Atrac3plus, and I don't want to switch my collection. Atrac3plus 64kbps takes way less room, and sounds better than mp3 at 128kbps and atleast as good as AAC at 128kbps. I don't really like iTunes, I don't think it's the great programme that some of you do! It's all about what you get used to. And it is all about preference. I'm getting the HD5 for sure.
Atrac sucks compared to AAC or MP3, Atracplus 64kbs? That sounds horrible and it cannot compare to 128kbs mp3 at all. Not even atrac 132kbs sounds as good as 128kbs mp3.
One thing that I think not many people know. The Ipod scroll wheel idea is originally developed by Sony. They used to call it Jog-Dial many years ago, and now only some Sony items have it. I am not saying the Ipod scroll wheel is ripping off Sony, but Sony originally developed the idea. I personally have a Sony mini HiFi, year 1997, which has a Jog-Dial. This particular one looks and works exactly the same as the Ipod scroll wheel. A rounded panel to rotate clockwise or anti-clockwise, then select. Then, there are some MD walkmans that have a Jog-Dial which looks different, but essentially is a scroll-click device.
As for Sonicstage and the Atrac format. I have been using Sonicstage many years now. I haven't had any problems with it. It is just like any other programme that requires some learning. I have not tried many music programmes, but I definitely won't complain that Sonicstage is hard to use.
I use the Atrac3plus format at 64kbps. It has been proven that if you record your original CD onto your computer, making the songs Atrac3plus, you will not noticed the sound quality difference from the original. This is because Atrac3plus cuts out the sounds that the human ear cannot hear. It has also been commented by many independent companies that the Atrac3plus at 64kbps is better than an MP3 at 128kbps.
I think the general problem with the Sony Atrac format is that it is not sharable. I have no problem with that. Put it this way, it is a PERSONAL audio, how often do you need to, say bring your walkman around to a friend's home and load your songs onto his PC? Anyway, this is not a problem now since Sony's new walkmans are all MP3 compatible.
The way I see it, the competition between Ipod and Sony, to me at least, rests only on a few factors. Design and battery life. Battery life Sony wins. Design, I like Sony (more solid, not plastic), others prefer Ipod.
I guess what I am trying to say is, does the software and music format really matter that much? Certainly not to me.
dont know if im flogging a dead horse but you cant start to beat the ipod by copying it i.e. the scroll wheel. Thats apple's thing so no matter how easy it is to use they cant use it. The buttons look a bit retro but thats ok and i assume with the new search function it comes with it will be easy to use. (someone mentioned it earlier)
Now on to battery.... Sony players generally wipe the floor with the ipods and this new player is no exception. you know those screws that people keep whining about? it allows the battery to be replaced for about 30 quid which i believe is a fraction of the 200 apple ask!!!
Ive not used sonicstage, but if you think its crap dont buy the player. The new sony players accept mp3 so you dont HAVE to convert to atrac. I dont remember, or care, but does an ipod play mp3 or wma? i dont see myself converting 20 gb of music.
I agree with chua, at the end of the day it comes down to looks and i like the sony styling, maybe just because its not ipod
If you like the click wheel and a bland white exterior buy the bloody ipod and stop bitching on a player that you you have decided to hate at the offset and will never buy.... does it make you feel warm inside when you do?
Im'also searching for the perfect DAP. it needs to be small, a 20/30 gb disk in it, long batterylife and good features.
does anyone know the features from the sony? does it have an clockfuntion?
Does it play playlists?
any other fucntions?
I won't buy an ipod because of the batterylife, rest of the ipod rocks i think(only the many pricey accessoires not!)
i got a question for everybody that uses an ipod. why would you want to be just like everyone else? wouldn't it be better to be the one that sticks out from the crowd? i just have to say i hate ipods (no battery life, too much work to find a song, ugly boring *yawn* design) it is better to be unique and one-of-a-kind rather than be just another ipod user. you would think people would learn this by now. this player i can say will beat out the ipod.
I'm still in two minds about the HD5... The Sony Network Walkman is still WAY less effeminate-looking than an iPod, it has a much better battery life and pretty good sound - it's a Sony (though you'll have to turn the crappy volume limiter off I think)... But I don't really like the design or look of this one, I much prefer the HD3...
So I can either wait for places to start doing their stock of HD3s at clearance prices or get the 30Gb HD5 next month... If I can get a Black 20Gb HD3 for 150 delivered I'll take it :) (Amazon now have it at 169.99. Hell, shave 10 off that and they're on!)
Has anyone ever commented on one of the most obvious aesthetic attractions of the ipod - the scroll wheel looks like a speaker. So the little white box looks as if it is related to the production of sound. None of the other players have this. I think it must work on a subliminal level. Just a thought ...
I have to say that I have had both the hd1 and the hd3 and unfortunately they both after reaching 6 or 7 days over the warranty crashed fortunately I had them changed both times and I eagerly await the hd5 but this replaceable battery has me worried is this the kind of thing which you are going to have to replace every month or so who else thinks so and my god sonic stage I agree as an unfortunate forced used is very poor I like the compression of the atrac3plus it means more music but the amount of time it takes and folks version 3.1 is not much better then the previous version its like giving Nicole richie a new face still as annoying and still following Paris Hilton about (itunes) hopefully the new hd5 will iron out all!! faults of its younger siblings but if they bring out the 30 gb version in black instead of only silver at 230 it is in my opinion an I pod beater but it is only my opinion before the hate mail starts flowing you hardcore i pod fans and lets hope it comes with one of those gimmicky docks that us consumers love so much
Ok, well firsty, I think the new Sony mp3 player is awsome, but then again, so is the ipod. With the HD5, there is some concern with sonicstage. I do not like sonicstage(i have a sony minidsic), however I worked out a way to overcome the problems sonicstage may present. Using RealPlayer, one could downlaoded an add-on that made it possible to use an MD on realplayer just like u use an ipod on itunes. This made using my MD a lot more enjoyable, not to mention easier. If Realplayer, or perhaps even WMP offer such an add-on as thery did for my Sony Minidisc, then i wont hesitate to buy this new HD5.
Guys shouldnt slate the sony til they've tried both. I got a Sony cos i didnt want an iPod it was too common and its slowly turning out to be fashionably unfashionable!
My gf has an ipod and i wasnt impressed at all. ok the click wheel is good but if you've never used it before u will not miss it and will get along fine with the d-pad. the clickwheel is nothing special. it was just novel at the time!! ipod users should stop hanging onto this as an excuse for being far superior to everything else around. "This is great but ipod has clickwheel" "X is miles better but ipod has a clickwheel" STOP IT!
The sony does a great job and the sound quality is far superior to the iPod. Ipod still souns tinny to me. The battery life and size are big plus's too.
I have had no problem with Sonicstage. if you are computer savvy you will have no probs with it. iTunes is overrated and the iPod looks cheap. Once you hold the Sony NW-HD5 you will be sold! Small, beautiful and awesome (replaceable) battery.
Sony has got it so right. And with direct MP3 compatibility the Sony is the winner!
why is the sony nw-hd called a network walkman anyway?I actually think I might prefer using buttons like the ones on the sony to using the ipod style.I know there is a lock feature on the ipod but i actually know when i press something on the sony.

i know this is a stupid question but i have'nt seen on any website that the sony walkman is jog proof
I've read the nw-hd5 manuel cover to cover. and i've also read ipod's manual cover to cover. I've also read both of their specs and warnings. and if you've done the same (not just looking at pictures and make dumbass remarks of what you THINK you know) then you will know that the apple ipod is not an original idea others were first (sony was ONE of several others). The ipod has limited battery life and is non-replaceable, except through apple. and let's be real cheap shiny white plastic come one it looks like it was found in a cereal box. Sony has always had superiority. and what's with all the beef with Atracs and SonicStage they're awesome but hey if don't like them the hd5 also plays wma mp3s and wav files. and you can convert those to atrac if you do prefer them. Apple only uses AAC and itunes with some mp3. and i don't know about you all but i don't like going in circles looking for somehting. i type over a 120 words per minute and the ipod wheel hurts my thumb after a while of use. and you can also switch the hd5's audio out to a line out for listening on speakers with out distortion. you can also charge 80% of its battery in ONE HOUR. you can also charge it through the usb or supplied dc cable. it also functions as a removeable disk. so if you don't like sonicstage you can use a drag and drop method. i have a sony clie and the first time i connected it to my computer it imprinted a folder directorty onto it. and inside that directory is a file for music. i've seen this on other sony products as well. so i'm assuming this will be that way too. and the bilateral screen orientation is awesome AND the buttons do switch orientation as well. and alot of people are very stupid and don't understand why would want to do this (and no it's not a gimmick) duh ONE HAND OPERATION.
I don't know about you all. but i'd rather be able to do whatever i want with my hd5 while using one handed. and looking good doing it. (BRUSHED METAL IS DEFINATELY A HOT THING) then have a white cheapy ipod going in circles looking for music.
by the way if you own a sony g-protection cd player you know what g-protection is. you can be doing whatever you want and it doesn't skip. ever!. so i'm pretty sure that this new walk man will be skip proof like it's g-protectioned cd brethern.
and since when has apple innovated! apple fuckin sucks and their ceo has lied cheated and continues to rip off the american people. read the book "iscam" or something like that. you'll be amazed. you'll want to go to your clossest computer store and burn everything apple. and i've known people that have worked for apple and they do cut corners. and i currently know someone that is employed by sony in japan and they truly try to do everything the best way there is.
sony is superiorty and the apple has met it's match. why duh determination. sony suceeds at everything. check consumer reports the number one 2 and 4 rated pdas are.... SONY CLIES. by less than one percent apple is ahead in problems but the gap has been closing every year. either way vaio still sells 3 times more computers than apple annually. sony has invented or help invented so many things that i don't know where we would be with out today. i mean come one the cd the casette the dvd! and they're working on next generation high definition dvds. and they're also responsble for blue laser cd writing. the sony ericson z500a is also number 2 to the motorola razr sony is the cutting edge. i think if you really look hard a day does not go by with out sony being part of your life everyday.
SONY!
What is wrong with SonicStage 1.5 - 3.1?
I found it a milion times easier than iTunes and MusicMatch.
First off SonicStage puts all your stuff in 'Albums' so its like going through your CD collection - unlike looking at every track in house in itunes.
as for transfering from computer to device well SonicStage hands down. I had a philips MP3 player and all the tracks got put in like the libaray in itunes whereas with sonicstage it put them in neat and tidy 'groups' or albums which is how it should BE shouldn't it. Keep up the good work Sony!!!
But why do you keep ATRAC3 132kbps?
why not ATRAC3plus 132k or 128k? (you say it better so why on Connect do you still use it?)
Also why doesn't Hi-MD take off i thought it was as-good-as having an iPod (at a budget) when you use 48k
does anybody know if i can upload my current mp3 collection from my PC, or do i have to redownload everything from sony connect?

Hi.
Just bought the Sony. I use to have an Ipod 3G 15gbs, but got sick of it.
Sony is really better, amazing sound quality (yet, not a very loud one), the battery is a must (I connect HD5 to the Stereo and it stays on and on and on and on), easy way to find things with the keypad. Its small and very well finished.
Two minor points however (one of them is very important to me). Sonicstage is not brilliant. Its easy to transfer cds or pc files if its from a artist or band. But its impossible to have a folder with a musical compilation, for instance, Chill in India or Buddha Bar. Sonicstage aplies the "artist" thing and instead of having the cd we got 15 or so names... very bad. The second is the reverse screen. It doesnt work automatically.
Anyway, I dont give a shit about this particulary function.
I do prefer the sony to ipod. Hey, I even prefer the Philips 20gbs old thing to the ipod.
The simple fact I cannot relly on the battery is a 100% turn of from ipod. I sold my own with half the battery life... only after 2 or 3 months of use.
Baaaaaaaad and sssssssssad.
People, go to the Sony. Youll be amazed.
I've bought a black NW-HD5 a couple of days ago. It feels and looks very sturdy and the brushed black metal is a real eye-candy!!! That in combination with a negative screen and I've bought myself a winner on looks!
The sound is great, especially with some good quality earphones (I use the Sony in-ear MDR-E868) so invest in some better earphones than the provided ones, although they are quite good.
About the so-called checker-board buttons: they work perfect! When in play-mode, push the up- or down button and without a problem you can switch through every song on it. The left- and right buttons are used to skip or fast-forward. The search-menu button gives you the find menu. All very convenient and easy to use. The time to get used to it is really short.
The G-sensor protects the HDD when it senses a fall and is used as well to rotate the screen and buttons!! in the direction in which you hold it when starting up. It doesn't work when you rotate it when on.
The negative screen looks awesome! You can however switch between negative and positive.
Battery-life is veeerrrry long! After more than 25 hours play-time it stills operates! And it can be replaced when it is broken!!!
The software works ok for me, but not more.
An minor thing is the little cover over the USB and power connections. I wonder how long it will last.... I might be wrong but it doens't look sturdy at all.
I would highly recommend the Sony if you are looking for a small but very good HDD MP3-player. Very good in looks, built quality and sound quality.
Sony has made a very competative player for the i-pod!
Dear Lord, there is some iPod fan-boys taking sh*t about the NW-HD5 like they know what they are talking about.
I challenge them to go out and buy the HD5 and use it or use a friends HD5 if they their friends have one. Most of you guys are complaining that the buttons that they are crap compared to the iPod's touch sensitive wheel and "great" user interface (UI). What are you guys judging your opinion on? Have you ever owned or used an HD5 to be able to compare it to an iPod UI? From what I've read on CNets and PCMags websites they really liked the user interface of the HD5 and the buttons. Since CNet and PCMag actually get to test the HD5 hands-on, what they say about the UI has more validity then some iPod fan-boy that looks at two pictures and says it is crap.
The next issues are how the devices acts with its respective proprietary software. The iPod has the same licensing restrictions with iTunes as HD5 owners have with Sonic Stage. You buy a song from the iTunes Music Store the song is protected and can only be played via iTunes or your iPod. The HD5 and Sony Connect work the same way.
Both Sony and Apple have their own proprietary audio formats. Apple has AAC and Sony has ATRAC. Both restrict the audio to their respective company players. The two fundamental things that truly set iTunes apart is its fantastic library usability and its drag and drop feature with the iPod (I dont consider their music stores because not everyone buys music).
On my computer I use iTunes to browse and play music while I only use Sonic Stage to transfer music to my NetMD when I need too.
The iPod is a solid digital audio player (DAP), but Sony does give buyers a fantastic alternative with the NW-HD5.
Pros (compared strictly to iPod):
-better sound quality
-smaller size
-removable battery
-longer battery life for playing mp3 and local proprietary format (ATRAC)
-A good user interface
-Competitive pricing
-Equal space to equivalent priced iPod
Cons (compared to available DAP):
- Sonic Stage
- Sony Connect
- Support for only MP3 and ATRAC, some WMA support, but not out of the box.
- Lacks recording or FM Tuner features
Those are facts that you cant dispute even if you are an iPod or Sony fan-boy. These are not opinionative points like whether the HD5 looks better then an iPod or that the buttons are inferior to iPods touch wheel.
The biggest thing that keeps the Sony NW-HD5 from being as nice as an iPod is Sonic Stage, Sony needs to make Sonic Stage more intuitive thus making it more user friendly. IPod offers the buyer great software to device usability compared to the HD5 and that is what will help keep iPod on top with the largest market share.
