PSP custom car mount
Turn your PSP into an auto audiovisual device with this simple yet effective setup. It converts the Intec desktop cradle into a charging car mount suitable for bringing the Playstation Portable on the road. Note that this setup involves plugging the audio into the car radio's aux input — if you don't have an aux in but you have a cassette deck, any of those cassette-style D/A convertors would do the trick as well. And of course, this technique is applied so that the passengers can enjoy the video, as the driver has more important things like, well, driving, as opposed to staring at a PSP screen — but we don't have to tell you that, right?

If I'm not mistaken... That's mounted in a 91 Toyota Corolla (Yes, I drive one. Only 65,000km on it!)... ROFL!

Might want to mount it somewere else then directly in front of the Heating / AC controlls.

Watch the road death toll rise!!!!

Yea, we are gonna need a good case for this thing if you mount it like that. All of that dust and crap flyin around in your car is gonna get it ugly looking. :shudder: Ugly 250 dollar PSP?

I suppose if you really wanted to you could count the above as such... :)
The setup is cool and all, but if I were gonna mount something up like this it would probably be a full on PMP or a realatively powerfull PocketPC or Zaurus of some type. At least a GBA SP, since you can currently do a few more things (like GPS and engine stats) than a PSP can.
To each their own...

OddMan, nice call on the cassette-shaped mp3 player. That does fit the bill as a DAC inside a cassette form factor... alas, it wouldn't connect your PSP to your cassette player.
I just hate it when people make mistakes when trying to sound all smart. They could've said "cassette adapter" but they had to get all fancy and use a fancy word they've heard before (D/A converter) but clearly don't understand the meaning of.
Thanks for that link though!

I got the general thrust of your comments, but I could resist capitalizing on the technicality as a good natured joke. Glad it didn't offend you one way or the other. Some of the pople posting in here can be quite sensitive...
"alas, it wouldn't connect your PSP to your cassette player. "
I was gonna acknowledge this, but forgot to. That being said, would it really have been so hard for them to include a line-in jack/wire ?
I mean, I remember when MP3's were just coming into style some other company had a cassette type player even back then. I find it hard to believe the micro electronics haven't shrunk sufficiently since then to permit this simple convenience. If they ever do I might actually replace the 5 year old cassette adapter I currently use (and have been using for...the last 5 years) that I got free with a $9 closeout cd player...

I was going to say early 90's 4Runner. My '94 looks really similar except I think my knobs are a little thinner.

I could be wrong, but I think it may actually be illegal in some (all?) states if there's a video device within view of the driver. I can pretty much guarantee you that if you get in a wreck and the cop sees it, you're automatically getting the ticket.
Brad @ Dec 19th 2005 1:23AM
This is for the SONY fanboys who can't afford a real indash DVD player.
JJ @ Dec 19th 2005 1:23AM
#12: I don't know about the other 49 states but under AB 301 it is clearly illegal in California.
Tuning Sensei @ Dec 19th 2005 1:23AM
I don't think a video player in view of the driver is illegal; it's if the auto is in motion and the video player is playing a video, then that is illegal.

for those worried about getting in trouble... its removeable duh!

I think the 6 powered mounting solutions that Arkon Resources Inc. is coming out with for the PSP might be a better fit for most cars. Arkon seems to have a good reputation for good powered mounts. They told me that the 6 PSP mounting solution they have should be available by the end of April to the consumer from their website. Hope this helps.

I like this new mount PSP mount I seen on the Arkon website. I have the VG967 so my passenger can watch a movie. It will come in handy once Sony comes out with a GPS in the PSP.

Could someone point me to a link for a "cassette-style D/A converter"?
I'm pretty sure analog-in -> analog-out means it ain't a DAC, but what do I know?
