Seagate going perpendicular, too
To be honest, we would have been surprised if they hadn't been trying to pour a little R&D sugar on this lately, but Seagate has announced that they, too, are going perpendicular, and that along with archrivals Hitachi and Toshiba they'll be one of of the first manufacturers to bring hard drives that use perpendicular recording to market. They wouldn't reveal anything else that we want to hear, like an exact date that they'd begin shipping their new perpendicular drives to customers or what capacities or sizes they'd come in, but like Hitachi and Toshiba, they're promising to dramatically boost the storage capacity of their drives by writing data vertically instead of horizontally.

First post!!!
MUAHAHAAHAHAHAAA
Doesn't this whole perpendicular thing kinda strike anybody else as a little suspect? You don't just flip magnetic particles on their edges like dominos. All they are doing is creating trying to bury each magnetic bit deeper into the surface of the harddrive, so it needs less surface area to keep it's position.
And nobody's said they've managed to do this yet, just that it might be possible. It's a long journey from making a cute flash animated with music, to actually making a whole new method of storing data. And now all of these hard drive makers want to jump on board an idea that may or may not work.
What the heck happened to holographic data storage IBM was working on?? It makes alot more sense to write a few hundred layers on top of each other, rather then try to defy the laws of physics with new ways to write on a single layer.
Everybody knows that eventually we're going to have to store data in 3 Dimensions, instead of just 2 (like now). So why waste the money and time on trying to upgrade a harddrive technology that's already over 20 years old?
i remember hearing rumors about this story yet im still confuesed on whats the big deal w/ hdd's going perpendicular. (i forgot)

Check it out!
LMAO that animation was great! Looks like their marketing team has been working overtime...
Where can I buy that mp3 player in that animation? I can't find it on Hitachi's website....you think it's a leak of a new design?
lmao...just kidding guys....
ROFLMAO that flash is HILARIOUS!
yeah, and where is seagates psychodelic flash animation with sexually suspect characters to advertise their move towards perpendicular recording?
I think they missed out on that one
reminds me of the stuff they did with the way cassette tapes (the little things that preceded CDs and replaced 8-Track). something about tilting the tape head at 45degrees and getting the information to be written on more of the surface area of the tape and getting a doubling effect on the quality/storage. somebody refresh my memory...
