Toshiba's flatbed 3D display
It took a couple of days for a good pic to turn up, but check out this photo of Toshiba's new flatbed 3D display
(the bottle on the bottom right is real), which they're claiming offers a more realistic "depth of touch" than upright
displays. Doesn't give you that full Star Wars-esque holographic effect you'll need to play a little
Dejarik Holochess, but the prototype does have a 30
degree viewing angle, which means you should be able to look around objects a tiny bit.
[Via 3Yen. Also, thanks to everyone who sent this one in]

Holy Calamity Screamin Insanity! Which arm do I gotta cut off for that! I'll have to run to the store at lunch for a hack saw, dont tend to carry one around with me, its not exactly practical, unless you're ted bundy or something.
Great!!! Now when you can buy a 3d-scrren you just have to get 12 cameras.
What's with the flesh colored bottle laying on it's side?
that looks so fake...
not saying it is or isn't... just saying it looks that way.
...Whoa. Yeah, what Jake said.
The real bottle is the one that is not casting a shadow.
it looks horrible
Fake looking or not (i think it looks alright), we must have research scientists continue their line of work for one day we must have....
THE HOLODECK.
Why waste so much energy on a holodeck? Something more akin to jacking into the matrix would be much more energy effiecient. Holodeck's are wasteful. Why waste energy simulating the experience externally when we know that some day we will be able to bypass all that and have live porn on demand beamed straight to our brain. Holodecks should stay fiction for the sake of the environment :p.
I thought you needed 2 eyes (or cameras) to be able to witness 3d effects. Was this photo taken with a stereoscope type camera?
lol finland, that's freakin hilarious!
Just a hint, the photo above is not 3 dimensional...
Unless you're some engineer from Toshiba and using one of their displays, which I'm seriously doubting from your comment.
