Tiger Gold Master leaked to P2P networks
Apple yesterday settled one of its three lawsuits against persons accused of leaking pre-release builds of Tiger to
file-sharing networks — just in time to free up some of those legal resources to go at it for round four: the gold
master of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger started appearing on the servers of known ripping groups over the past weekend. Origins
of the 2.5GB disc image (which installs Tiger build 8A428) are unknown, but the destinations are pretty clear: it won't
be too long before it finds its way downstream onto the major file sharing networks.
[Thanks, Daniel]

Hey guys any chance of some sort of 'not work friendly' warning on the links? Hit this one without checking the url (assumed it was a link to the original story) and whooops - that'll be a site allowing copyright violations! Currently sitting here waiting for the phone to ring....

Unfortunately this is a never ending issue and much like the sharing of mp3, will never go away. The trick is to make it more appealing and affordable for people to want to purchase and support the stuff they buy.
Tiger is worth every single penny and I for one have already placed an order for it on Amazon since they are offering a $35 discount. I was already prepared to pay $129 as its extremely affordable for what you're getting but add a discount, you'd have to be retarded not to go for it.
Apple software is always worth supporting in my opinion. They do things right and deliver some of the highest quality material out there.
Microshit on the other hand can go to hell. I wouldn't touch that garbage if it were free. Which is exactly what I did; I won a Dell system at a raffle; I sold it the very next day. I hope they pirate that company to the ground!
Apple Zealots .....oh why oh why must every comment that has anythign to do with Apple...have this morons post something.
I want to have my very own Apple zealot but the dorms have firm rules about no pets :(
Way to give the link to the world! Now everyone and their bother wll know where to get it instead of buying it from Apple.
I wouldn't be surprised if Apple comes after you for posintg the link!
Does anyone know if its safe to install this leak? Also would you still be able to get updates and things like that?
that disk image is all over the net now.
i pre-ordered my copy of Tiger... but I still installed this rip on an extra machine to check it out.
simply put.... it's amazing.
Love your work China.
Hey I appriciate the link, it's not like we would not find it ourselves. It just saved us some time.
Thanks buddy
ive just got to say...i feel a bit pissed that tigers been leaked.
Great to see Apple getting pirated. They are a much more evil company than Microsoft can ever hope to be. The only reason they are not the big dog now is that Jobs and the other Apple bigshots spent the 80's getting coked up instead of researching what would sell in the mass market. If Microsoft built a PC that required you to remain so tightly tethered to them, you'd hear no end of it from the niche OS zealots.
"Microshit on the other hand can go to hell. "
Yeah, because it's not like Microsoft charges $130 for every little service pack they release like Apple does.
You guys apparently just love being gouged.
(and btw, I hate Microsoft. I just hate Apple worse, at least in terms of computers.)
To #10. I am perfectly happy where Apple is at right now. They are making profits, and keeping duumba$$ idiots like you from using a mac, therefore keeping them focused are creating the highest quality hardware and software.
Who cares about being 'number one', if number one means putting out pos products? Obviously Steve doesn't.
Jeff, you just don't get it. There are generally as many features in each OS X release as in each *major* release of Windows. Windows service packs are just that - bug fixes rolled up. The only time any features showed up at all are in Service Pack 2, and those were all long-overdue security features. We get those in things like 10.3.1, 10.3.2, etc, and yes, they're all free of charge.
Apple's update schedule with 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4 is like if you actually got Windows 2000, 2001, 2002, etc. We get major feature improvements every year to eighteen months. Drop the leading "10." and it makes more sense (it's a marketing thing).
Tiger does not have as many end0user features as Panther did, but the under-the-hood advancements are simply mind-boggling. Go check out CoreData and CoreImage to get an idea of some of the Tiger-only apps we'll be seeing in the next several months. Personally I'm going to hold off upgrading for a while - Panther is running just fine for me.
That's always an option - you don't think the features are compelling? Well, don't upograde then. No one forced Windows users to use Windows ME (thank God).
So, "acetonic," you figure the problem with Apple is they were doing too much coke in the '80s? (By the way, the apostrophe goes where the ommited characters are, not where a possessive would be indicated).
Perhaps you don't remember what computing was like before Microsoft weasled its way up to what you call "big dog" status. There was a time when computers were made to be useful, not to be another advertising delivery tool.
I'm thankful that Apple has kept the reins tight, because it has insured that there will be an alternative to Microsoft's Wal-Mart (win at all costs, quality be damned) approach.
It's common to hear auto analogies for the major operating systems - the Mac is a BMW while MS makes a Chevy. I'd say those are only half-right. I see it as Apple selling Acuras, while Microsoft takes you for a ride in a taxi and tells you it's a limo.
GOOD Engadget, GOOD..
I'll wait for longhorn.. I'm expecting to see a direct torrent link to the iso..
Yeah, engadget, i'm seeing now gizmodo & slashdot posting direct torrent links to the software you make (if someday you have eggs to develop software..)
That is the way to make hits.. yeah yeah..
wtf, why are you linking to the torrent?
I think it is inappropriate for a new source to link directly to the torrent. The underground is underground for a reason.
This leak will not be as bad as everyone thinks. First of all, Apple doesn't put serial numbers on their operating system. If there was this rampant piracy problem, they would require the insanely annoying activation like Win XP.
The reason there isn't the rampant piracy comes from 2 characteristics of Apple.
1) Lack of Market Share
2) Apple Computer Users
1) Lack of Market Share - the fact that there are so few users prevents the number of websites supporting downloads of Apple software. The limited number of torrent sites, as this is the only efficient way of downloading a 2.5GB file, often get shut down when they distribute large amounts of Apple software.
Besides, there are only a few major sites where you can find decent rips of anything.
2) Apple caters to 2 types of users, power users and beginners
The beginners, people like my parents, will never pirate Apple software because they don't think to do it, beginner users will pay their money, be happy with the software and move on.
The power users, or "Apple Zealots" might end up downloading the software, but many love Apple so much, they buy it anyways. Regardless, Apple is a HARDWARE company and only sells its software to maximize the efficiency of its hardware. Even if you download their $129 operating system, you still pay $2500 for your next laptop when Apple offers the next big thing making their money anyways.
And in reply to #11, if you can compare MS SP 2 to Tiger than good luck. Microsoft doesn't give you a new version of Outlook, Search System, Chat Software, Internet Explorer, etc... They update your software to protect from viruses and other security risks, and if anyone believes SP 2 does any different, I would love to hear it.
I already paid my money for Tiger, and I've dowloaded Apple software before, but my needs for a multimedia computer running UNIX with style suits me better than Microsoft.
I agree Windows is a necessity for many people, but in the transition to a digital lifestyle of music, movies, and photos, Apple has a full house while Microsoft is sitting with a pair.
#17. transition to a digital lifestyle of music, movies and photos? obviously you haven't used a media center PC yet since it does all that, record TV programs and it even has an interface and remote for using it from 6 feet from the screen. yes Windows can be unsecure and buggy but if you know how to use it properly, it'll work great.
And Apple doesn't have (yet) any direct competitor to the Media Center computers and now that is all in one digital lifestyle PC.
I am usually a fan of "file sharing," but not in this case. After all, this is your OPERATING SYSTEM! To trust that you would get a perfectly working copy from a P2P network is insane.
As far as linking to the torrent, it's a way to publicize it to the point that someone shuts it down, so that's a good thing.
Actually, 8A428 is not the Gold Master anyway - AppleInsider reported that Apple seeded later builds to the developers, retracting the "gold master" status of 8A428. Something like 8A432...
And I don't believe that the seeded versions will containue to get automatic updates, so buying the real product is going to be the only way to make sure you get 10.4.1 and such.
#19 obviously you haven't used a media center PC yet since it does all that
I've used a Media Center PC before, and the implementation is very poor. First, unless you have the latest hardware, it eats up your system resources rendering almost any other task on the PC useless.
Second, you are extremely limited on the types of media you can use. I'm not trying to say that Apple give the user free reign on playable media in Quicktime, but the universe for Media Center PC's is very limited.
Media Center PCs are difficult to set up, use, and enjoy for the average user because although accessing the content is not that difficult, getting it on the PC can be a nightmare.
I like that Microsoft has taken a proactive step to develop a media center PC, but they jumped the gun without evaluating how they would integrate Music, Movies, and Pictures Together.
Apple doesn't provide you with the interface that Windows does for media, but anyone can use the iApps without any computer skills, and they all integrate together.
Time will tell whether Apple jumps into the Media Center ring, but you can be sure it will be implemented with reliability, integration, and available to all types of media you can find any open source Codec for.
"Time will tell whether Apple jumps into the Media Center ring, but you can be sure it will be implemented with reliability, integration, and available to all types of media you can find any open source Codec for"
Price = one arm, one leg and two balls.
I'm going to buy tiger, probably at an Apple Store to see if they'll give 10% of any purchase again. But I'm still going to download and use this one early. :)
#23 hahahahahaaha! blah blah blah... Apple caters to two types of users.. blah blah blah.. the Power user and the beginner...
You had problems with a media center PC? "cough" I don't think your parents are the only "beginners" in your family buddy.
Does anyone know if the Mac Mini will come with Tiger eventually?
You are wrong, #19. MS frequently gives out new versions of IE, Messenger, Outlook Express, web authoring tools, etc.
I don't know enough about Tiger to know exactly you're getting for your upgrade dollars, but I think it's ludicrous to buy a new OS because of the new software they happen to include with it. Why not just offer the software enhancements separately for a small price? I think money is the answer.
Why pay $130 to replace an OS that is already "perfect"? Why is MS sued for bundling a browser that can be downloaded for free when Mac users have to buy a whole new OS to get the latest features and enhancements? Either software is allowed to be bundled with an OS or it isn't. I guess I have a hard time understanding the law as it applies to these scenarios.
I am disappointed that Engadget chose to include a link to an unlawful distribution.
@22 8A428 is the GM release. There were no other builds released to developers under the 10.4 build. They were most likely under 10.4.1
As this is an exact copy of the OS you get out of the box, it will update to 10.4.1, .2, .3 just fine.
These trolls deserve to be charged on both Civil & CRIMINAL laws. Those of us that do want an open internet SHOULD care because this kind of sh*t is what gives the DRM-crowd all the ammo they need. When big brother intrudes even further into your privacy, you can thank people who do stuff like this. P2P sharing of copyrighted material is right down there in the gutter with the spammers and authors/distributors of malware.
Are you trying to get Apple Legal after this site? Posting a link to copyrighted material is downright stupid. Your site is now just as guilty as this torrent site. Congrats, as I'm awarding Engadget the "Way to go Dumbass" Award for the day.
It's interesting that in the screen shot, System Profiler shows the boot volume is "Tiger 10.4", but that About This Mac shows "Mac OS X Tiger".
Makes me think the screen shot is faked. The whole released may be fake. I'm not going to download it to find out tho.
Probably not a wise decision to install this build on a Mac that has a .mac account tied to it. I'm just saying...
#22, and #30
The builds after 8A428 were server builds.
You endgadget guys are so idiot to indirectly link to the file. Was it an oversight, are you sucking up to Apple by pointing the leaks, or are you trying to keep it nice with the underground, God only knows.
"Yeah, because it's not like Microsoft charges $130 for every little service pack they release like Apple does."
what do you call windows ME? that pos was $130 and was actually worse then the previous version before it or after. Most real windows users won't touch ME with a ten foot pole. tell us right now that ME was worth the price MS was charging for it.
wow, and I thought readers of this site had some kind of sense, these posts prove me quite wrong. Candidates for idiocy and "dumbassness" award = post #31....
Apple bigshots spent the 80's getting coked up instead of researching what would sell in the mass market
-----
LMFAO
no hahahaha, seriously.. Check out the Apple website, this is no service pack...
Besides, Apple's pricing strategy means you can 'pass' on upgrading if you're not impressed by the new OS.. In fact.. if you buy Apple hardware, you get the OS free.. (makes sense)
Apple Software is made to sell the Hardware..that's why they give you free OSes with new hardware
"Apple gives you free OSes with new hardware"
Haha. Right. Do you really believe the cost of an Apple PC doesn't include the OS?
Brilliant. Just brilliant. I knew Apple guys were smart, and this proves it!
A Mac user here.
Mike's comment about the free OS with hardware was mind bendingly stupid. My head still hurts after reading that.
hehe, post #38, heh, oops, post #31 is just fine and I am sure if this is a legit GM copy it will update,
... I meant post #32 is moronic, and #36 as well for that matter.
Glad that is cleared up, phew....
@marco: Guess who's a moron, mixing post numbers and cannot put two words together. lol. Way to go, suck up to engadget, moron.
As I predicted (see #22), by linking to the torrent and drawing attention to it, it has now been shut down. I checked it last night, and there were some comments aboout how it was "very buggy" and even the site moderator was telling his minions to just wait for the real deal if you want a properly working OS. So, maybe it wasn't the complete retail 10.4...or at least let's hope not.
#29: are you insane? because you can't be serious... I'm not gonna bother to correct you, would take to long... just lift your insanity up for everyone to see...
quote #29: "You are wrong, #19. MS frequently gives out new versions of IE, Messenger, Outlook Express, web authoring tools, etc."
NO! How long has it been since MS release a major version of IE or Outlook Express for that matter... didn't think so.
quote #29: "I don't know enough about Tiger to know exactly you're getting for your upgrade dollars, but I think it's ludicrous to buy a new OS because of the new software they happen to include with it..."
If you don't know... keep it shut! At least get the facts straight in advance of posting stupid comments. Try http://www.apple.com/macosx/techspecs/
quote #29: "Why is MS sued for bundling a browser that can be downloaded for free when Mac users have to buy a whole new OS to get the latest features and enhancements? Either software is allowed to be bundled with an OS or it isn't. I guess I have a hard time understanding the law as it applies to these scenarios."
Do you even know why Microsoft got sued???? Comparing apples and cars are we?
ok, ahahaa, add mu5ti, (you must be a cyber warrior) post #43, to people who suck
wahhhhhh
Marco,
SHUTUP until such time as you can string a sentence together properly.
Until then go back to frequenting the Teletubbies website where you must have learnt to speak.
"SHUTUP until such time as you can string a sentence together properly."
Well, I would do what ever it is you wanted me to do, but you don't know how properly place adverbs in your eloquent statments...
oh, and it goes, shut up, not shutup, you smart lass you.
"Until then go back to frequenting the Teletubbies website where you must have learnt to speak."
Are you Abe Lincoln? British? "learnt?"
Your right, I have learnt my lesson from you, ye olde jolly bummer
If I wanted to get grammatically perfect writing done, I would submit my research to the New England Jounal of Medicine...
bitemebitemeHAHAHAA, how's this for an incomplete sentence??
I'm glad you're now taking your medication as prescribed. You still don't make a lot of sense but I guess the pills can only do so much.
