Aaaaaaaaa this is smooth and slick like Bill Gates micro soft pens!!
I notice only one controller port [at least that is what I think it is.] It seems kind of boring to me. Just looks like a slightly modified DVD player.
Well there's a few things different between the OurColony image
and this one:
1. The arrow on the eject button is facing north instead of left.
2. The "button" near the honeycomb vent is pressed down.
3. The honeycomb pattern near that button doesn't match.
4. There is now an LED near the 40GB slot.
5. That silver piece is missing unless it can be removed or pushed away like a
slot hole.
Could it be a different model or just a fake? Who knows, but I'm about ready to bet the farm.
You got it wrong. I am the original originator of that joke in fact, and thereby know the original text and subtext pertaining to this jocular exchange. The joke goes: "What does Bill Gates call his pens?" and the subsequent reply line is "Micro soft!" Only in this manner can you truly obtain the sweetest humour from this prize plum of a joke.
looks great.. i just hope it's not too bulky.. in comparison to the previous pic released earlier, the EJECT symbol seems to have rotated. This could be one of the other models? And it looks like there's some digital screen on the side? I guess may 12th will show it all.
Haha fucking owned all you knee jerk morons who cried fake. Suck it.
That's not a digital screen on the side. It says 40GB. It must be the add-on hard drive unit.
In response to dooz's impolite and factually inaccurate comment:
In actual fact, I am the creator of the “micro soft pens” joke. I have been telling it as an “ice breaker” to nearly everyone with whom I have come into contact since 1992, well before Microsoft's flagship product, Windows 95, was released! In 1994, I began posting it to various technology and humour USENET groups and soon it had spread to even the most uncivilized boroughs of the jokester scene (the Southern states). Here is a slight deviation of the joke I posted to the rec.humor group in April of 1994 under the moniker “Wall Data”. http://groups-beta.google.com/group/rec.humor/browse_thread/thread/872316ee179d96ca/37ad9ae0adb69489?q=bill+gates+joke&rnum=5&hl=en#37ad9ae0adb69489
Good day!
A friend of mine pointed out that it looks like that the hard drive here looks like a clip-on/slide-on module. So, that button would be the release to slide it off, and that 40GB spot isn't a slot, but a badge for the module. Going further, I deduced that the other shot with the shiny badge was showing a not the hard drive module, but a "blank" that you use when you don't have the hard drive. That would explain why this shot clearly has an LED, while the other does not.
Goodly Zed,
RE: "slight deviation of the joke"
I do believe you meant "slight deviation from the joke," or perhaps even "slight deviation on the joke." Your use of the preposition "of" at that juncture is simply unpalatable.
Adieu!
Um Guys, we have a problem.
Take a look at this close up picture. Now take a look at the ejector button. the Arrow is clearly pointing upwards. / Now if you would take a look at the other photo, the one that came before this, the ejector button's arrow is clearly pointing to the left. Does anybody notice this?
so just to tell you
http://http//www.engadget.com/entry/1234000293041091/
is presently redirecting to microsoft.com? What's up with that?
#13... easy. It's NOT on the same plane. From the photo, DVD drive is on the horizontal. The HDD is a small notebook sized drive mounted on the vertical.
"Also, how in the world are you going to tell me that you can fit a DVD drive and all its moving parts IN THE SAME DESIGN PLANE AS THE HDD!?"
Someone needs to go back to geometry class. The DVD drive is clearly at least 1/2" above the top of the hard drive module. You're missing a sense of perspective.
My guess is also that the hard drive itself is a 2.5" laptop drive, not a 3.5" desktop drive. A 3.5" drive would be too big to fit into that slot (judging by the size a DVD would have to be to fit in the DVD drive). The 40GB capacity is another tipoff - it's easier to come by 40GB laptop drives than desktop drives these days, and consequently probably actually cheaper to buy them in bulk. So there's probably even more clearance between the hard drive and optical drive than there otherwise would be. In other words, plenty.
It's still a goofy looking console, though. Sheesh.

:O :O :O WTF?!?!
Oh this is CLEARLY something that the mac-fanboys at SomethingAwful made in PAINT.
CLEARLY!
:p me likes.
To me it looks like this picture shows a harddrive connected to the side of the box. Not like it´s pushed into the box, but slided onto the side of it. The entire drive is on the outside of the xbox unit - like a ipod taped to the side of it ;)
The previous pic probably showed a unit without the harddrive and just a "placeholder" instead. Or maybe the earlier pic showed a version with flash-memory instead of a HD?
COME OUT AND HIT STORES YOU SEXY BEAST! I CAN'T WAIT O GET MY GRUBBY LITTLE HANDS ON YOU!!! GRRRR....
Wow, #18, it's like you're reading my mind or something. :P
It's pretty obvious that the older "photo" is in fact a photoshopped concept image, and this is a read 3D model, or a 3D render.
Either way, this is either the real thing, or an elaborate hoax. Neither would surprize me that much.
It's pretty easy to mock up and render a convincing console design.

Where are the controller ports? We're not going to be forced into using less responsive battery powered wireless controllers are we?
@ 22.
Have you ever fiddled around with a Nintendo Wavebird controller? By the sound of it, you haven't. It's as seemless to the cord controller's quality as possible. Personally, I'm looking forward to this wireless revolution.
Anyways, either the folks over at the studios of Microsoft are laughing at all of us believers right now or they're running around trying to figure out how pics of the console slipped out (if they didn't do it purposefully, that is).

low innovation levels . conservative continuation .
in papal terms . this xbox bathes an unholy past in white and
gives us a continuation of current gaming trends .
j. allard and the designers at MS looked to the DEVKITS for
inspiration . there is very little about this design to like or
dislike . i think they succeeded in not making me MAD as my
current gen xbox still does . a controller so unholy so american
that it makes one take note of a multi-national corporation's
ability to completely get it wrong . i think we should thank
jonathan ives and my desktop G5 for this new incarnation of
american gaming . i again will look to SONY to deliver a
device of utter beauty, elegance and power . whilst
nintendo will create a platform on which boutique, auteur
developers will create GAMES AS ART .

i'll buy a 360 as soon as i see a crisp NINJA GAIDEN BLACK

it won't be about innovation . just conservative continuation
in a refreshing neon green marketing guise .

Hey genius, you are an expert in 18th century Popes, or you just never learned Roman numerals in elementary school?
Am I the only one who thinks it's a slick design, but the material looks like cheapo plastic? I can already see the silver paint coming off to reveal the white plastic.
The eject symbol is pointing a different way cuz it rotates when you stand the console up on its side or put it down. Just like the Playstation symbol on the ps2 drive, just automagic. Come on guys, you should have picked up on it...

Because the link has http://http// at the start of the link. It's a firefox thing. ;)
OMFG it silver!!! Apple has silver products, RIP OFF!!11!
Hmmm.. a lot of rounded rectangles... looks exactly like every Apple product made in the past 10 years (if you've never used OS X, then.. you're clueless.. but OS X and.. of course, now longhorn, showcases smooth lines and rounded rectangles EVERYWHERE.. )
This is Xbox Aqua.. and hey.. for you guys keeping score at home it's
a) G5 and
b)Closed Architecture
Yahoo!
gooshh... it is real! i can guarantee to you.. but how did those pics get out.. well.. anyways you have seen it now :/
gooshh... it is real! i can guarantee to you.. but how did those pics get out.. well.. anyways you have seen it now :/
For gods sake! Just because its bloody silver, its not as if apple invented silver, silver has been a popular colour for many years. Go hug ure ipod! N e way, about the xbox 360. I have been reading about this on other gadget sites, most people think the original picture (the first one) is actually nota photograph and some graphic concept. So maybe the prototype is slightly differnet from the graphical concept?
wow i created a design exactly like this last week...
i wish you people would all stop acting like u know more then eachother about the 360...i mean come on now no one really knows anything about it except what has been released by ms... so shut up!!! and as for you idiot people who have caught onto the mac wave give me a friggin break...just becausea company comes up with a design thats sleek doesnt mean they ripped off a mac..seriously just get over it
yea ..but if this is acually what its gonna look like i'm very excited!
If you guys know anything about lighting and looked at the first image of the Xbox 360, the main source light is coming from the bottom correct? And the power button is beveled outwards according to the images circulating from ourcolony.net which _means_ that the light _should_ concave to both sides of the button, correct?
If you don't know what I mean then look at the image in the link below. I tend to believe that while the image we had yesterday is close to the final console it is essentially a photoshop mockup of what the console may have ended up looking like several months ago during the design process for the case.
If anything the image from yesterday is somewhat accurate, just don't directly compare and contrast the images since they won't be completely accurate by any means.
Now if you look at today's image it looks much more credible primarily due to the angle of the console and lighting done by the photographer. If anything the image looks like a promotional image for marketing purposes.
Lighting Comparison: http://www.instruktlab.com/xb360.jpg
I think that this image looks more credible. And this also leads me to believe that the top will be flat. Sure the front will have concave lines, but it doesn't make sense to have all this effort to make a concave box. It would be hard to make, hard to stack etc...
I've made a quick maya playblast to show a perspective view. It's on my blog apparently you can't link in comments?
guys, guys. for all of those noting about the eject button being facing up, instead of left: keep in mind the other picture of the 360 is with it being stood up vertically. this is most likely laying down horizontally.
Personally i hope this isnt the final design... they said that the unit would be concave and i hope so or the name 360 has been lost there has to be curvature to make any sense and the original image just looks more sexy. Not to mention im suprised no one mentioned... thisone seems quite a bit thicker than the first mockup. Thick = BAD
Personally i think it looks better than the original xbox, almost sexy. a sexbox. The first xbox looked like a frickin ball sack, come on guys. This is def an improvement by looks.
God you people irritate me sometimes.
This picture is NOT of the Xbox 360 standing up. If you can honestly look at both pictures (meaning the one from yesterday and this one) and not understand that yes, indeed, the arrow is pointing 2 different directions, then you need to go back to geometry class, or get a freaking tutor or something. Draw a damn picture on a piece of paper and try to rotate it so the arrow points a different direction. Doesn't work so well, does it? That's not even mentioning the fact that the arrow points in different directions RELATIVE TO THE MEMORY CARD SLOTS BELOW THE TRAY. What are you going to do? Somehow turn the console on its side, then change around the design of the internal components so the memory cards are in different places? Don't be stupid.
The discrepancy is probably the result of the inherent problems of an artist's rendering instead of an actual photo.
Oh, and Benedict XIV is "14", not "16". Either you haven't been paying attention the news lately, or don't know your roman numerals. Either way, do us all a favor and DON'T VOTE.
And for the guy that posted about the concave part of the green light, I don't know where you got the idea that it's curved outward, but it would look retarded if it was. It's clearly indented.
To the guy that asked where the controller ports were, there are none. The controllers are wireless. Go use a good one before you bitch about them.
God I wish people on here would read up on the things they post about before posting and making themselves look fucking stupid.
I think, unless someone already said this, that yes the eject button rotates, though it doesn't seem there is much room for it to rotate, and that there are expandable hard drives this pic has one inserted with the label, light, and the is button depresed. The damn thing better have Wifi, and a tivo thingy, lol, why the hell else do u need 40g on an xbox?
~ryan~
The button CAN'T rotate, look at its shape, it is not a circle. The only way it could maybe go is upside down, but that would be pointless. It just proves the other image is an old design. Hopefully that means they fixed the crappy logo on the other image as well.
The eject button has rotated cause the old picture is a drawing of the xbox and this is a photo of the xbox. The question is what was that other ugly prototype for? The one with the big handle.
Anybody else notice that the font used on the "Memory Unit" plugs is different from the last image? I know that one was probably a mockup drawing and this one a render, but it's worth noticing if we're scrutinizing all of this stuff.
Its pretty confirmed that Xbox360 won't have a built in hard drive... I'm wondering how much an add-on will cost. Not having to deal with any memory cards was one of the biggest advantages of xbox imo, and it will suck if I have to spend $100+ to get the same feature on Xbox360.
All the same... I would rather have spent $350 on the Xbox 360 and have it come with a hard drive. Without the hard drive standard, very few game developers are going to spend the resources necessary to include things like custom soundtracks and loading game data onto the HDD for faster loading. For them, it doesnt make sense to spend all that money on those features when only a small percent, maybe 25% of Xbox360 owners max, more likely closer to 10%, will have a hard drive. I especially like fast loading time... oh balls.
is it true that they're gonna release halo2.5 when it comes out????
two things:
1) the most current challenge one ourcolony.net is "I am in 6 places where you talk." after some thinking which came up with nothing, i saw my dad talking on the phone, and when he was done i checked the ear piece and the voice piece, and there were 6 circles--circles being ms's shape of the day w/ the whole 360, total revolution theme.
2)w/ the whole hdd thing, they'll probably include a 5 or 10GB hdd, then sell a "xpod" that's 40GB, can play music, maybe even movies to keep up with the psp.
but if there isnt an included hdd, im not buyin one. if there is a hdd, ill wait a few months untill a price drop. no way im payin 300 for a system and then 70 for each game.
Why do you need 40gb on an Xbox?! One of my Xboxes has 250gb. And I'm quickly running out of room (after upgrading from a 120gb).
