Dell's Axim roadmap picks up a hard drive and cellular data
If we're to believe Brighthand's source, it looks like a bit of Dell's Axim roadmap is on the table, and the fate of X30 is grim. Though it could find itself discontinued in the next month, apparently the X50 will be stickin' around a little while longer, and can even expect a Windows Mobile 2005 (aka Magneto) update. They're also said to be working on a multimedia-centric device with a hard drive, audio and video playback features, as well as a focus on gameplay features (which should take on Palm's new Tungsten X, of course). It's also supposedly in the cards to hit up something in the way of cellular by 2006—whether or not this is the Dellphone, we've yet to see. Anyhow, despite generally being totally feasible, excercise some healthy skepticism here people.

Why is this so surprising? We all know that phone-less handheld sales are on the decline. Furthermore, Dell has the cash and relationships to bang out a multifunction device...
Wishlist: large hard drive and wireless USB so I can use the drive on the PDA as my primary data drive....w/o wires CHA CHING....

Throw a hard drive and cell capabilities in an X50 (or something simliar) and I would buy it on the spot. I love my X30, but mid-2006 would be about the time I would be looking to upgrade.
Since I use my bluetooth headset almost all the time now, even if they kept these things the same size, they would be great phones. I already use my X30 to dial-out using the contacts and bluetooth as it is.

adding a big display, dell could be just making a new table pc.

also, if they do come out with a smartphone, it should be gsm so i can get it for cingular. and in regards to my previous post, those dead x30's were faster than my ibm "not-so-quick-to-thinkpad" (haha) so i hope that proves that dell needs to make this smartphone as awesome as possible, and as affordable as possible, because i'm tired of waiting for 10 minutes for windows and my wireless to load, and then another 5 for outlook.

Did anyone notice that the x50v and the x30 have both gone down in price on dell.com (I think). the x30 now goes for 358, and the x50v goes for 405. Like those prices!

I am glad I have waited for Dell's next release. I have a X30 H and almost bit on the X50. Now I may be rewarded for my wait with a Dellphone PDA. Bring it on!!!

#1, actually that's not true. Sales of non-PE PocketPCs went up in 2004 versus the previous year. For all the hype, smartphones really aren't a very big seller.
#6, actually that's not a good price on the X30. The 624 MHz model's list price is $349, and you can frequently get it for around $260 on sale. Likewise, you can get the X50v for a sale price of $370.
I'm dubious about this information. Its source is questionable, and the information itself doesn't make sense for Dell.

Dell and others in the PDA market would do well to learn from the company called ETEN - not yet available in the USA. The ETEN P700 is a PocketPC-(GSM) phone not locked to any service provider, has both SD and CF slots, Bluetooth, and has USB host connection for plugging in any USB device, including a pocket hard drive. I have a 1GB card in the SD slot, and a wireless LAN CF card. It is simply awesome.
