Sony announces new DVDirect hybrid DVD recorder
Sony's just announced their second generation DVDirect hybrid DVD recorder, which lets you burn footage straight
from your DV cam to a DVD without the need for a computer. The new DVDirect has a Firewire port (or i.Link, as Sony
calls it) for exporting video directly, and for you trailing edge types, you can also use it with an analog camcorder
or VCR. New to this model is stand-alone recording support for DVD-R and DVD-RW discs, as
well as the regular DVD+R, DVD+R double layer and DVD+RW discs. And for more serious video projects, you can also
hook the DVDirect up to your computer, which will apparently give you faster burning times
(six minutes for a DVD-R or DVD+R disc at 16X), in addition
to more video editing options. Look for it sometime next month with an MSRP of
$299.

UMMM this is already out! DUH
oh..lovin it
Why can't congress push for these instead of those lousy hybrid jelly bean cars.
Actually, this is new. I have a (V1) DVDirect here in my machine room (I'm a video editor), and it only features composite/SVideo input. DV input for the new version is a nice touch. It's great for approval DVDs - no PC required, though it does tack on an ugly menu. So it's a no-go for final products. For home movies, it'd be just fine.
Speak for yourself Bill, I want my home movies to have snazzy menus too. ;)
I also own the first version of this. Besides Firewire they also allow DVD-R(w) as the first one only took +R(w) when not hooked up to a PC. I love my old one but I am going to ebay it for this new version.
#4: I agree - Our Master Control bought a standalone DVD+RW (Sony) that tacks on that menu... They're selling dubs off the thing!
I'll walk over and ingest to AVID... They come with dual-layer drives now ;) No crap like that to clients.
I got this for my dad for last christmas.. its been out for nearly a year. Whomever posted this needs to be smacked.
We also have V1. We found that while the box states -R/W compatiblity it only burns +R/W. We also thought it was odd to encrypt the DVD when the product is aimed at home movie makers.
I would like this to be portable and run off of battery power.
can you put a small view screen in the unit and run it from portable battery power?
is there any way to change (hack) the firmware to change the menus?
is there any way to hack the firmware of the sony DVDirect. I'd like to change the menus.
Anyone know if the fiirewire port can also be used for connection to a computer? The tech specs in the original press release listed both USB and Firewire for computer interface. However later datasheets only list USB. I would really like to use this with my Mac, so firewire is preferred.
Thanks,
Joe
