Cingular officially brings back the Audiovox SMT 5600
Ending months of speculation about when they were going to get around to finishing to this, Cingular has finally officially relaunched the Audiovox SMT 5600, that fairly well-liked Windows Mobile-powered Smartphone that was originally available from AT&T Wireless before the carrier got swallowed up by Cingular. Specs are the same as before, but we'll recap 'em for you anyway: it's a tri-band GSM/GPRS phone with Windows Media Player 10 Mobile (it's the first cellphone compatible with PlaysForSure), 32MB of RAM, a 2.2-inch, 176 x 220 pixel LCD screen, Bluetooth, a VGA quality digital camera, and a mini SD card slot. They'll sell it to you for $199.99 with a two year service agreement, at least if you're lucky enough to live in "select markets".

Nice phone, known as a Qtek here in Scandinavia.
I called Cingular yesterday trying to purchase this phone and said it was not available. I guess I'll try again this afternoon.
The audiovox has some good info on this phone:

There is a PDF on the SMT5600 page that describes it in good detail.
i dont normally post on stuff like this, but let me do everyone a favor and say that this is the most magnificent, competent, reliable, useful, and otherwise godly phone ive ever used, do yourself a favor and get it soon if you need a smartphone
p.s. but does anyone know when the htc compact mini mda magician or imate jam or whatever its called is gonna be offered stateside? cause thats about theonly other phone i care about
About damn time ... this phone will be obsolete in a few months. I've wanted one of these through Cingular forever, but I don't think I'm going to go through with it. It's just too little too late...
I was told recently by a Cingular rep that they where dropping the SX66 this fall so this might be there idea of a replacement but not mine!
For the price and all it's features... missing EDGE but then... if the OS is stable enough... and AT THAT price???
*sigh... p1 fanboys... lol*
great phone, but can you use the blutooth to connect to a Palm t5 or the new Lifedrive for web and email?
Ditto what Yoshi said (Post #3) I would add that it's a tough little phone. Mine has been dropped more times than I'll admit and not on the carpet. One complaint, Ttoo much attention is needed to press "select" so that you don't get "Up" or "Down".
Yes, Cingular is a bit late to officially support this phone, but many have been happily using it with Cingular since 11/04 Me included ;)
Does this support voice dialing through bluetooth? How about file transfer through bluetooth? Besides those two reasons and the Audiovox having WMP10 on there I don't see any other reason to leave my MPx220.
As for the OS it is stable, there's a few quirks here and there but nothing to change your mind from getting it, its only locked up on me twice over about 5 months. Voice dialing over bluetooth is supported, not sure on file transfer (I could never get my PC BT dongle to work right) but ActiveSync over Bluetooth is supported so I guess it should be. WMP 10 paired with a miniSD card is great, movies for trips, music for walks, etc.
WMP10 is great with autosync and autofill. Pop in a 1gb minisd and it's a better music player than a Shuffle (track selection and album art and all that).
File transfer over bluetooth? Yes.
Pocket Streets too. Though there are many nav solutions for it including nautical charting.
Dropable.
Just plain an awesome phone.
How about voice dial over bluetooth. I miss that.
Voice-dial over bluetooth works perfectly with my Jabra BT250. I can also use the phone as a GPRS dial-up device from my laptop and get roughly 64K of bandwidth (sweeeeeet). ActiveSync over Bluetooth works just as well. The best part about this phone is Virtual Pool (like $20) and Mini Golf (another $20).
This phone rocks... I've had it for a week and I love it. My only complaint is that there is only a Normal and a Large font, I really would like a Small font as well. Anyways with Cingulars pricing it would probably be a better deal to buy the ATT phone on EBAY and unlock it. Then just get it flashed with the Cingular ROM... You don't need to but it would help with a few bugs that come up when you put a Cingular SIM in the ATT branded version...
everyone keeps saying that this phone will become obselete, but what's it going to be replaced by here in the US?
no offense to anyone (to each his own) but i find this phone... ugly. im happy with my mpx220 - it runs faster than the a-vox and i love the idea of a smartphone with clamshell design. and with the black housing... mmmmm. but im glad to see that cingular is carrying this for those of you who are interested in it. rock on.
Where in Cingular's world is it available? I wonder if Amazon will make it available again?
I love the MPX220 too but to be honest its missing some key things from the SMT5600 such as WMP10 and Voice Dial over Bluetooth. Are there any hacks availeble yet to get WMP10 on the mpx220?
An updated version of this phone is at least another 4 months away. I read that it's gonna be replaced by a similar looking device but supporting the new MS Magneto operating system.
A prototype was shown in Cannes France.

Does anyone know how I can flash my unlockde ATT version to the new cingular ROM? thanks
Engadget has deleted all posting critizicing this phone. They apparently have some connection with Windows Mobile that prevents them from allowing negative posts.
That is simply not true. We haven't deleted any non-spam from this post.
