Successful run of homebrew code on the PSP

That is the sound of one box cracking. The Saturn Expedition Committee reports a successful writing, compiling and
executing of the first homebrew code on the
PSP, compiled with the ps2dev chain. They've
released the app for download, though as noted it will
only run on PSP 1.0 firmware (American PSPs shipped with version 1.5) for now.
Hello World PSP download
[Thanks, Greg and Mike]

What does that mean? What will it do to the psp??
@#1: seems like they can do whatever someone wants to put the time into coding.
It kinda works on my psp. When I go to load it, I see the thumbnail that says HELLO WORLD, then the title is Hello World PSP ver.2. Then I try to load it and it says failed to load game. What could it mean? Boot loaders if someone figures out how to make umd discs, converting commercial games to run off memory card, etc. Big step forward.
hmmm. let me see. so i put a $40-$50 dollar game on a memory stick pro duo. but a UMD holds 1.8 G so if a game takes that much space a MS only holds 1G but it costs $150 dollars. and when the 2G comes out it's gonna be near 400 dollars.
hmmmm.... 50 dollars, 400 dollars... 50 dollars...400 dollars.
i'm gonna go for 400 dollars...why?
c4u53 i 4m 733T! HaX0r5s Ru7e5! lol
nice concept, but unless prices of MS comes down i rather pay the 50 bucks for a game.
The real prospect here is the potential for PSP applications: Better media player functionality (than what is included), PIM functionality, oldschool emulators.
Leave the commercial games in the commercial space, I say. Homebrewn games by small-time developers will by my primary interest. Portable, high quality 3D games you can play via the Internet are the current allure of the PSP, which is really an evolutionary step in handheld gaming. Infuse that vast potential with the creativity of underground development, and that has the makings of revolution.
well so far it works on ONLY the 1.0 JAP psp because of a "hole" in the 1.0 version. so US and JAP1.5 wont work, which means a LOT of psps cant use this coding for any use...yet.
so looks like back to the drawing boards because US has no use of this yet and a lot of JAP systems upgraded. mite take a while because that hole was fixed...dunno whats gunna happen next
What I really want is an N64 Emulator with Super Smash Bros. :) Oh and wireless MP is a must. :)

the ripped UMD ISO files are about 512megs at the max. you could ALMOST fit the THREE ripped isos onto ONE 1gig memory stick. the UMDs are filled with blank space.
Seems pretty awesome, a great start to open up the PSP
8. and 9. i stand corrected.
i still rather have the UMD, but it might be nice to test a game out before i decide to drop 50 dollars on a game. which i could have done that for dynasty warriors.
but as far as hacks go. i MUCH rather have a hack that allows me to use the USB port on the top of the PSP so that i could attach a portable harddrive. image a 40 GIG mobile harddrive like lacie being able to attach to the PSP. now that could back up games, and but a good amount of my dvd collection on it too.
now there's a hack worth exploiting.
now if someone would write a really ausome browser thats standalone and can be booted from the MSDP card, then i wouldnt have to wait so long for wipeout to load and maby it would actualy work like a browser and not like a portal- just my ideas about ability to load homebrew
The guys at work gave me a PSP today as a gift..
Thanks Guys!
so cool the psp i love it

I'm not too interested in nabbing the Big commercial games, but I would LOVE to have some simple homebrew stuff. For instance, how about some simple puzzles games? A PIM would be great! And almost an emulator would be awesome! Those GBA emulators just aren't powerful enough.
But what about somebody working on a hacked PSP Firmware update??? That would solve ALL of our problems. We could just setup a Proxy server and upload in new Firmware that would give us full access to the PSP's hardware. We could also, in theory, change the Wall paper, reskin the interface, the works. All we need is to hack the Firmware and make it happen!
Why hasn't anyone started working on Homebrew Firmware updates yet???

They have, its hard, be patient. check out

theyre usually really fast and up to date on everything, check the forums too. i check daily ;)
srry, i mean they are TRYING to atm
Guys, a 2GB memory stick costs $400 NOW. It wont in a year. And the $50 versus $400 argument is really stupid. Say over the life of my PSP, I were to buy 25 games. Average the price to $40 per game. thats $1000. Or if I'm l33t enough, I will buy a memory stick or two, saving a minimum of $600. That's a conservative estimate because It would probably be a LOT more than 25 games, and the sticks will drop in price. This is not complicated economics to the pirates out there.
Me personally, I want emulators and a web browser that doesnt require booting a game first. As far as PIM goes, no touchscreen equals a colossal pain in the ass.
Cool, they took my submission, that rules! Anyways, this isnt just for emulating the pirated UMDs. Once this takes off, you can (probably) expect homebrew browsers, email clients, snes emulators, and anything people can code. Because this was compiled on the ps2dev chain, there are ALOT of possibilities.
Give it a couple weeks before it is really useful.
A PS1 to PSP compiler would be the coolest thing since _________.
I'm a little amazed at how people here are celebrating the potential to eventually copy games illegally. Yeah, it would be great to be able to compile homebrew software for the psp, but the number of people saying, "I can't wait to buy a 2Gb memory stick so I can get hundreds of dollars worth of games for "free" is more than a little unsettling. Just because you can do something, doesn't make it right.
Another feature of running games from a memory stick that many people overlook is the extended battery time due to non-use of the optical drive.
Even if you do own the games on UMD, wouldn't that alone be incentive for you to backup and play from the MS??
Just my 2c...
also i dont think anyone pointed out that this could lead to add-ons for games. that would be awesome. MODs for PSP games. PSP will become like a portable PC. A BIG step for gaming
When are companies gonna learn that piracy (and open-products) sell?? Look at what happened to Nintendos GC. They made it soo tight that no one bought it...what sold? the cracked consoles like XBox and PS2. Another example is the sat dish. RCA DTV outsold all others in USA because it was cracked first. I don't agree with "theft" but on the other hand if the piracy stats are really that bad how did Micro$oft get rich with so much piracy going on? Maybe it's more of a greed problem. Sony should open the PsP up to developers and offer a SDK as well as dox. For serious commercial apps they can offer paid support etc.
wuts a homebrew game? and how to get one?
It's a "legally" free game created by someone with the knowhow to make a game for the system in question and the extra free time that I don't have :/(free unless they go through the extra bs to liscence it)
and why can't the wireless capability be used as access to the extra content and programs that may be stored on a home computer, wireless networks are only crippled compared to wired by about half the speed, I've played d2(running it completely from my home server's hard drive, total game size is close to 2gb I believe) on pc through a wired network and never used more than 20mbps at once, whereas wireless networks usually run at 54mbps.
My uncle created a program to my psp....and changed the screen to whatever I wanted to put there. Also he put old nintendo games on there which is so cool and sega games too. Yeah that's all I wanted to say!
